Thoughts on Movie 12

Post by RandomGuy96 » Sat Aug 17, 2013 12:42 am

Made this because no one else was. What do you think of Movie 12?

I liked it. It's my favorite of the movies. It's got some decent comedy scenes, all the villains getting released from hell was an awesome idea, the fights are good (I especially like Super Janemba vs SS3 Goku), and Janemba is an awesome villain. He's got a great design, is funny at times, has interesting powers (unlike many characters who are like "der hur my pl is 10 bajillion so I wen"), and he one-shotted Vegeta and beat the shit out of Goku (always a plus).

The only part I really didn't like was the final Janemba vs Gogeta battle. This movie continues the trend of of having the villain dominate everyone only to be beaten at the last second, in a very short time. That's just a major anticlimax, but I guess that the filmmakers wanted the 'even' fight in this movie to be Super Janemba vs SS3 Goku instead of Super Gogeta vs Janemba.

He's probably referring to the Bardock special. Zarbon was the one who first recommended destroying Planet Vegeta because the saiyans were rapidly growing in strength.
It was actually Beerus disguised as Zarbon #StayWoke
Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

I felt it had a little too much goofy moments. And a really weird villain...

Definitely one of my DB favourite movies of all time. My only complaint was that there wasn't a longer fight between Janemba and Gogeta.

Schemmel just kicks ass in the scene with Goku going Super Saiyan 3 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dY2IBPzJhI

Also, it's one movie I feel the replacement score did better than the original.

Still my favorite of the original 13 DBZ movies. Goku's SSJ3 transformation remains the best of them. Janemba was a very interesting design and a equally interesting concept, being the physical manifestation of 1000's of years of evil energy. He also had unique powers such as warping reality, creating portals, and manipulating physical mass. Fights were good, comedy with Fat Gogeta put me in tears first time I saw it, and Gogeta's proper debut was amazing. Goten and Trunks screwin with Hitler was a funny little bonus for me, not to mention Gohan one shotting Freeza to dust.

Janemba is one of the coolest villains, but the movie itself is overrated. It's decent, but the fight scenes with Gogeta and Janemba are way too short. Gogeta never shows up until the very end of the movie and the scenes with the villains escaping from Hell are pretty short as well. I don't love it as most fans do.

Thanks Random. Been moving back into college, and totally forgot about these.

I really like this movie. Janemba is one of my favorite movie villains, especially in his fat stage. Seeing Goku have to run for his life and ask for help is also great. Pikkon is a cool character, although he seems totally different here than in the Otherworld Tournament.

I don't really care for the stuff back on Earth though. Gotenks shenanigans have never amused me, and, IIRC, there is a huge lack of Piccolo in this movie. Not a fan of that.

Overall, I give this movie a B.

Movie 12 is my absolute favorite with cool fighting scenes between Son Goku and Janamba, with the cherry on top using Gogeta to defeat him in the end.

This movie is so good that I'm able to mentally block out the cop-out Mary Sue ending. When I think of Movie 12, Gogeta is the last thing on my mind.

I like this movie!!

Has many funny parts.

I always like to seeing an angry Enma.

Fun fight between Base/SSJ Goku and Janemba.

SSJ3 Kakarotto Vs Super Janemba shows some of the Kakarotto´s unique abilities in hand to hand combat.

To me, the fight between SSJ3 Goku and Super Janemba is what would have happened between SSJ3 Goku and Super Buu.

I like SSJ Gogeta. A underestimated character by many here.

Love, love, LOVE this movie. The animation, the locations, fights, the humor, and of course, Gogeta.

It was a fun movie. One of the best things was Chris Sabat as the Dictator. He owned that role.

I've referred and will refer (as I go through the movie threads- I'm gone a week and thanks to Dr. Machismo all 13 are up! ) to some of the movies as having a lot of great ideas and tidbits, but not knowing how to slot them all together into a cohesive whole. Fusion Reborn actually does this very well, and is able to pull off the tonal confusion of the Buu arc much better overall than the Buu arc itself did. Goku gets to bulldoze as Super Sayain 3, Fat Janemba is an adorably freaky death machine, Final Janemba is cool, and pouty Vegeta is great for a laugh. Honestly, the one thing that felt off to me is that the movie is far too quick in establishing Janemba's godly, dimension-breaking power- Final Janemba actually spends more time chasing Fat Gogeta around like a Scooby Doo villain than actually fighting or showing off how powerful he is.

This movie also has a couple of the best dub lines Funimation's ever done; "Blonde hair, blue eyes, super strength... I should be recruiting them!" is one of the funniest damn things I ever heard out of this series. South Kai's "Have faith, North Kai!" gets me laughing every time too, for some reason. Shame on Toei for missing so many of the Hitler jokes that made themselves that Funimation nailed (Thank god for Chirs Sabat). Hitler isn't going to know that blonde hair is delinquent in 90's Japan, guys. I mean, he's not Hitler, but he is.

Janemba was an enjoyable retread of Boo, the animation is really drop dead gorgeous at times and the material with Goten and Trunks with Hitler was hilarious (Even more so in the dub).
It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.

Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

You know how this was released in select theaters? I lived in Kansas when this was released, and it was playing at a theater close by. So I saw it. I remember that. I really love this movie. It's so silly, but great. I love it.

Fights like this and the SSJ2 Gohan vs. Bojack scene that really killed it for the viewers. Why so short? I know sometimes there are drastic differences between one characters' power and another, but c'mon at least make this worth while! We saw maybe 20 seconds of Gogeta and then poof we see no more of him. Whats worse is that Gogeta was never Canon.

If its any consolation, I still would have preferred a SSJ3 Vegeta and Gogeta in Battle of Gods instead of Super Saiyan God.

Wow, I never knew that!

Though the fusion was short, it was very sweet. Don't have much to say about the rest.

Despite not having much Toriyama input — though it did influence him to intentionally avoid the Fusion technique for Goku and Vegeta in the manga proper — it still feels like one of the most "Toriyama" of the original 13 Z films. After three installments of the Broli Show and a retread of Gohan's fight in the Cell Game, I think it was needed. I like how the tone strikes a balance between silly hijinks and high-stakes action. It doesn't hurt that a bunch of other characters (even Paikuhan!) get a chance to shine while Goku and Vegeta are doing their thing against Janemba, either.

You can complain that Gogeta didn't get too much screen time, but I personally think he got exactly as much as he needed, without overstaying his welcome. There's a reason they cut out the scrawny version of "Veku" from the final version of the film, and it's not because the movie needed more Fusion than it already had. Gogeta was all badass, and no filler (for lack of a better term).

I always wondered where the skinny Veku came from, I know he's on that epic DBZ poster that has literally everyone on it but he's not in Movie 12 at all obviously. But I agree having Goku and Vegeta screwing the fusion up twice definitely would have been overkill.

I like Movie 12 but last time I watched it, I didn't really enjoy it that much. I think it was because the fights in the beginning has too much slow-mo balletness to it. Goku and Pikkon are just jumping and flipping all over the place and the same when Goku meets Janemba.. too much playing around BUT when shit gets serious, it gets freaking serious and thats a good thing.

I think it would've been cool if Janemba sent weaker clones of himself to wreak havoc on Earth, but I guess he's not smart enough to do that.
