Are you happy that Toriyama made Goku the hero again?

Post by thatdbzguy » Thu Aug 22, 2013 12:04 pm

A very popular complaint with the Buu saga is how Gohan was hyped up to be the one to defeat Buu, and yet ended up being useless once Buu absorbed Gotenks and Piccolo.

My question is, do you agree with Toriyama in thinking that Gohan was not suitable for the role as the main hero, and are you happy that Goku ended up being the hero once again?

Yeah, pretty much sums the show up right there.

I agree with it but it was Toriyama's fault that he made Gohan a pacifist for no reason during the Cell games. I'm not happy he took all this build and took a dump on it. We need a movie were Gohan kicks some ass in his Ultimate form for once :problem: .

Well I don't agree nor disagree. SO I'm not happy nor am I'm upset. I understand Akira Toriyama'a point of view of wanting Goku the hero of the story to be the hero of the last arc. But what I hated is that he nerfed Boo just so Goku can fight him. I would have been fine with the Genki Dama ending and had Super Boo(Not Buff Boo Nor Pure Boo) destroying the Earth in a fit of rage. After all he did create a portal. With that the same thing can happen. Cept Boo gets a rage boast and kicks their ass BADLY. Then Vegeta gives the speech on how Goku will not give up and such. Next have Vegeta ask him the question of how many times Goku saved Earth. So he goes to hold off Boo and Satan gets involve. Super Boo takes Fat Boo out and turn into that Gray Form. Vegeta starts to do better but not by much(Getting at least 1 or 2 hits). Gray Boo(Pink in the manga) beats Vegeta up worst than Freeeza and looks at Goku. Goku can't launch the Genki Dama because of Vegeta. Satan saves Vegeta and all. Boo then does one last ki attack(Strong beam) to clash with the Genki Dama(First time this happen?) and dies.

 sorry I just turn this into re writing Goku's hero ending. But yea if Goku was to be the hero I would have prefer if it went like that. Also think Gohan being a pacifist in the Cell Arc changed his mind about having Gohann as the main hero. To bad he was all hype.
Gohan kicks some ass in his Ultimate form for once :problem: .
I agree. Even a what if in a video game.

I didn't really care who was the hero, but Gohan falling flat on his ass sounds more in line with his character to me.

It's kind of weird people get so worked up that the main character... is the main character... and does main character things.

I think its the way it happen. With the whole nerfing Boo to fight Goku(NOT A POWER DEBATE) and all the hype Gohan got when he turned Mystic.

While the Buu arc did make for the most entertaining to watch Gohan for me (I really like him as that kinda nerdy teen crime fighter Great Saiyaman with sentai-leanings and his relationship with Videl.) Gokû's still my favorite character from db so I am happy he got to be the main character again.

I just wish that the last third of the arc wasn't written so badly to shoehorn Goku back in. After the Potara is introduced, the quality takes a dive. Gohan's power up that has been built up since the beginning of the arc doesn't matter. A new ass pull fusion method gets introduced to beat the now mega OP Buu. Gohan somehow gets absorbed. Vegeta gets brought back from the dead, when it would've been far better if he just stayed down. The battle with the strongest and smartest villain in Z ends up being a boring curbstomp (except the Candy Beam scene, that was funny). Gohan CAN'T CATCH AN EARRING (yet he can catch bullets). Super Buu suddenly becomes slower than SS Gotenks and randomly loses the ability to sense ki. Gohan is conveniently out cold from being absorbed, meaning he can't wipe the floor with Pure Buu, and Super Buu is conveniently again strucken with a terrible slowness that results in him not being able to blitz Vegeta.

Basically, the main hero and villain were both turned into idiots in the most annoying and PIS way possible, just to make Goku look cool. And it just gets worse from there, with the whole final battle being possible because Goku wants to hog all the glory (risking the UNIVERSE in the process), and refuses to bring Gohan or Vegetto to one-shot Pure Buu. And they throw in a retcon that makes Goku an asshole, and then have him continue to act like an asshole by hogging the glory.

The series should've ended with Super Buu (Goku, Goten, Trunks, and Piccolo absorbed) vs Gohan.

He's probably referring to the Bardock special. Zarbon was the one who first recommended destroying Planet Vegeta because the saiyans were rapidly growing in strength.
It was actually Beerus disguised as Zarbon #StayWoke
Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

Yes.

For me, it's always been Goku's overarching story. Gohan was certainly set up but his decline makes just as much sense. His entire deal is 'I get angry, only then am I powerful - you can't exactly be the hero if you require everything to go tragically wrong before you're of any worth.

Do I think Toriyama brought it back to Goku as well as he could have? Absolutely not. The writing in the Buu arc is pretty weak compared to the preceding arcs.

I agree with this even though I have no problem with Vegetto.

I don't mind Goku taking back the spotlight, the problem was how he got it back. Random does a good job explaining.

Anyways I would have been fine with the Genki-Dama ending if Gohan and Gotenks could have helped out. Have Goku getting his ass kicked until Kibitoshin comes in with Gohan and the boys to fight to fight Buff Boo. Buff Boo (make him stronger) would have unlimited stamina so he just keeps regenerating from all attacks and would eventually overwhelm Gohan and/or Gotenks. Then Goku talks it over with Vegeta about the Genki-Dama so he basically go through the troubles of them building it up. Eventually Buff Boo stands tall and we have Mr. Satan save the boys and Gohan so Goku can fire the Genki-Dama and win.

No. I was bored of Gokuu as the role of main protagonist after the Freeza arc.

Yes, I like beginning and ending the story with the same main character, especially since I love Goku's love for life (I don't mean it completely in the literal sense) and drive.

It ruined the purpose of the Cell arc ending, which i love so much. but in the end Goku >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Gohan
so, i'm kind happy, and kind not. i'm happy cuz Goku is my 2nd fav character in the series and i love him more than Gohan. i'm not happy cuz it ruined the ending of the Cell arc. i think Gohan should've stayed the hero in the Majin Buu arc too, cuz the whole secret power is about that. but in the end i think Goku's playing the "hero role" better. so as you can see.. i have a messy thoughts about bringing Goku as a hero again.

Even though the whole Buu saga felt like it was building up to Gohan taking his fathers place for good I was very happy to see Goku return as the hero. At the end of the day he captures the essence and feel of Dragonball more than any other character. Gohan may have risen to the occasion when needed but he still didn't truly love fighting like his father did. I'd actually say Goku deserved to be the hero more because he didn't quit training ever like Gohan did.

I thought people got tired of Goku being the hero so many times? In the DBZ movies, he kills every movie villain expect for Garlic Jr, Bojack, Bio-Broli and Broli (debatable if he was really there or not).

Ironically the only time Goku ever "quit" training was in the Cell Saga when he put his faith in Gohan instead.

Well, in my view it wasn't just Goku who was the hero at the end. It was a team effort. So I enjoyed even if it screwed over all that build up to Gohan.
It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.

Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

But he was never really the main character in Z at least not until the very end. He was in Dragonball but pretty much as soon as Z starts were introduced to Gohan and Goku gets killed which is about as symbolic as it gets. Sure we still follow Goku from time to time and he still fights the villains but it's much less so than in Dragonball and he never even get's to defeat any of the villains. I mean for large chunks of the story he's absent whether it be from the rejuvenation chamber, heart virus or just messing around in space somewhere. Gohan on the other hand is pretty much always in focus during Z and has the most character growth both physically and mentally. Not to mention he never died (until Goku was decided to be the hero of course). Gohan's last fight with Boo was practically set up for him to win anyway if Goku hadn't shown up and distracted him.

Dragon Ball series is based on Dragon Balls and Goku. Goku is the main character from the very beginning and he is the most suitable for and people need to accept that. I like to see others take the center of the stage and defeat some stronger villains but Goku never should be a secondary character.
Toriyama:
Goku wants nothing other than to get stronger, and it feels like he doesn't have any other instincts.
Goku deserved to be the hero more because he didn't quit training ever in his life. Vegeta also deserves more!
The series should've ended with Super Buu (Goku, Goten, Trunks, and Piccolo absorbed) vs Gohan
For what? To see Ultimate Gohan being killed by one single punch? I disagree! I like many more the dbzfan7 idea as alternate Boo´s arc ending.

Lolwut?

I was half joking; the addition of Goku's power would have basically no effect on Super Buu, who is already tens of times Goku's superior. Or, more likely, thousands of times stronger.
