Official On-Going DBZ 2013 Movie Thread: "Battle of Gods"

I think Shida Naotoshi did his own storyboard for that fighting, too. Considering how often he pulls that sort of thing off it must be a lot of his own style.

I expected a lot of quality from this movie, I knew it would look much more refined than the other movies so far, but... That video just blew my mind, it's beyond my wildest expections!
This is where you can tell the difference between this movie which actually looks like a movie with a movie budget, and the previous movies which were merely "special twice-the-usual-length episodes" without a striking difference with a regular episode (I'm not saying that they are bad though).
You put anyone in front of that video, and even if they just barely know Dragon Ball, they should be saying "wait, that's not some regular anime episode, it's something more!"

In just a few weeks, the movie's going to be available in blu-ray, you guys should prepare yourself psychologically so that your eyes won't pop out when you open them wide in front of all the amazing pictures on your screen!

I still don't understand why he is just a SSJ1 in that clip.
He already fought him on King Kai's planet as a SSJ3 and lost so why would he try again but using a weaker form?

He didn't knew he lost Super Saiyan God and was Super Saiyan. Goku has become a Super Saiyan with Super Saiyan God power.

Yeah, it's been around. It was officially released on the Song of Hope/Cha-La Single CD as well.

That one, right? You certain? I own that CD and other than the DRAGON remix and CHA-LA HEAD-CHA-LA's normal Japanese version, instrumental and English, it only has the original Japanese version of HERO and the instrumental version...

I like how Piccolo is of relevance to the Saiyans to be in this picture.

I didn't know that. September 13th? Nice.

Mexico will be getting the movie in theaters on September 27th. I'm almost sure most people here will prefer to wait to see it on the big screen with the Mexican voices.


We got most of the original cast back for the movie. The only "high profile" they didn't call was Goten/Kid Gohan/Kid Goku's voice. They refused to sign her up because she was a head figure of a voice actor strike some years ago. The fans were asking for her but... I guess Diamond Films thought it was enough to gather everyone else to balance the "fan rage".

From Laura Torres own words:

It makes me very sad. I want you to know this. It's not me. I was at their disposal. I told them. There was a rumor that I was disabled and no longer worked. Then I spoke with the company. I placed myself at their disposal. Even I told them I'd do it for free. I also said that if they did not want me to be in that company, I'd sent my audio. All in honor of you, the fans. I'll tell you something from the heart, and I want you to know it from me. I will say that, maybe it was too uncomfortable for them, and for me to go. I wanted to say that. But I was willing to do it. Because for me, I think the most important is you, the fans. And I think the public deserves respect and to demand what you are paying.

My only true disappointment in the movie. Laura will always be Kid Goku/Gohan and Goten.

They are moving so quickly in that fight scene, it's hard to tell what's going on and appreciate the art work.

Perhaps when the DVD comes out in Latin American they can redub Goten's lines with Laura Torres voice. It worked for the Saint Seiya Hades/Elysion arcs which has 2 dubs, one for TV and one for DVD.

Boy, Toriyama wasn't kidding when he praised the fight scenes. It'd almost make me feel sick to watch it in a theatre. Makes me think about how cool it'd be to see one of the fights from the series animated like this, eg. Goku vs. Vegeta. Can you imagine Kaioken x3?

Pretty sure something's been cut out of this clip, since Goku and Beerus end up in space rather abruptly. That, and the seemingly "Engrish" version of Hero has likely just been slapped over the top since it doesn't even line up with the 'film version' of the song that's included on the soundtrack.

Oh, and on him being Super Saiyan...another "out-of-universe" reason could be how difficult and expensive would it have been to animate Goku's Super Saiyan 3 hair in a scene like that?

Yeah, I can see a lot of work went into making that short clip. It would be better if it slowed down at certain points with a bullet time effect. I'll probably make my own edit when I get the bluray.

I don't think so. Shida Naotoshi used Super Saiyan 3 Son Gokuu in his cuts for One Piece episode #590. I think Shida used Super Saiyan here because it is Gokuu's most known form and it is what Hosoda wanted.

They are moving so quickly in that fight scene, it's hard to tell what's going on and appreciate the art work.

Animation isn't about art work, it's about movement. The thing to appreciate is the use of the camera and the manner in which the characters move.
