What do you think is the best fancomic?

Post by Dr. Machismo » Mon Aug 26, 2013 2:57 am

Here's my thoughts on fancomics that are meant to be followups to either the manga or GT:

Toyble's Dragonball AF: The best fanmanga I've read so far. It actually feels like it could be a sequel to Dragonball GT and is much better than GT at the same time. It also collects several ideas fans came up with for AF but never jumps the shark at the same time. If only it got more updates though.

Young Jijii's Dragonball AF: Unfortunately, this comic isn't very good. None of the story arcs seem well polished; the Ize arc has little to any depth, for one. It's literally just about an extremely powerful enemy who shows up, beats up everyone but is defeated at the end of the day. That would make for a decent Dragonball feature film, but not a good Dragonball story arc. The same with the Marble arc. While the new Shadow Dragon arc has more depth and feels like more like a Dragonball story arc, having two Shadow Dragon arcs taking place in the same timeline is unneeded. The Shadow Dragons also seem blander this time; many of the ones in GT had elemental traits, which was interesting. And a ton of the artwork is copied, which is no good. This comic has some good ideas, like having a more grown Pan and Uub seeming to have an "evil" form. Vegeta, Gohan, Goten, Trunks and Uub are also stepping their game up, which is cool. But that's really it.

Malik_DBNA's Dragonball New Age: Perhaps the worst fancomic I've actively read. Honestly, it's very overrated. There's a ton wrong with it. First of all, it takes place after GT but makes Goku's sacrifice in the Shadow Dragons saga completely pointless as Goku is brought back to life and things go back to the way they used to almost as if nothing happened. At least Toyble and even Young Jijii's DBAFs still maintained the significance of Goku's sacrifice. Killing off Krillin and having him become much stronger in the afterlife was also unnecessary and seems too over the top. Having yet another set of Dragonballs in this timeline is redundant at this point (we got the Black Star Dragonballs already. We don't need another set of Dragonballs). Rigor is also an unoriginal and predictable villain; he's yet another powerful Saiyan and similarly to the Ize arc in Young Jijii's Dragonball AF, his story arc is just him showing up, beating up everyone and getting defeated at the end of the day. Had Rigor not have been another Saiyan (seeing as that's too similar to Broly), that would only make for a decent Dragonabll feature film. There are even more Saiyans here, which is just unnecessary. In the Aladjinn saga, where Vegeta gets possessed yet AGAIN by the villain, which is just too repetitive and unoriginal. Aladjinn seems to have a lot of depth, though, and it would have been great if there was a lot focus put on Uub during that arc. Unfortunately, with Uub dead and Vegeta being Aladjinn's host, I think the ship has sailed for Uub in this comic. This comic also tries to remove some of the inconsistencies and plotholes in GT, and even though that seems to be pointless, is nice I guess.

Salagir's Dragonball Multiverse: Its concept and premise is quite amateurish, but its execution is pretty good. There are some parts that I really would have done differently, but overall, it's a good comic.

They all have their ups and downs.

Toyble - ANOTHER case of bringing Broly back, Gohan just suddenly having a tail and going SSJ4 without entering Super Oozaru form first.

Young Jijii - Ize is a pretty weak villain in terms of story and the english translation doesent hold up to his strength. 10X stronger than Freeza? In his base form Ize would be 1.2 billion. By those numbers a SSJ3 Goku ON NAMEK would equal him. Are we to believe even with his two other forms, hed be able to handle a SSJ4 Gohan and Vegeta, Majuub, Pan, and a Adult SSJ3 Gotenks?

Multiverse - Again, whats with the Broly worship? Ignores some manga canon, uses their own form multipliers.

DBNA - SSJ5's design, which is more or less a personal nitpick, Rigor himself is a great character. Vegeta getting possessed again is kinda meh in my opinion but as long as its executed well I dont care.

My personal favorite is Young Jijii's followed by DBNA.

"Who wants to be a superhero?", of course, because it actually looks like something that could really be a part of the manga :D

For me to enjoy a doujinshi, it has to feel authentic. The only one that really feels authentic to me is Young Dijii or Jijiis or whatever the hell he goes by now. It might not have started with greatest writing in the world but it picked up a lot in the later volumes and is definitely the most enjoyable to me.

Many others that I've seen just take me completely out of the plot when their visuals are just too far removed from Toriyama's. Toyble's is very close, it's readable but I find the thickness of his strokes distracting.

I absolutely love Young Jijii's art style. He really captures the expressions of the characters in battle. For example you can see Gohan just seething in rage as a SSJ5 against Ize. I know he traces a lot but honestly I dont care. Hes tracing off the original manga, which I dont mind as long as he doesent trace off other series.

Toyble has the amazing Ryu-Shin realm concept. That I really liked about his doujin.

Chichi's Peril

Second best is Who Wants To Be a Superhero by Michsi. The art is great, the story really sucks you in, but the humor is what makes this comic the best for me. I've genuinely laughed at some parts which is really rare for me to do when reading any sort of fancomic.

Next is Dragon Ball Multiverse. I know the comic is flawed as all hell (the specials prove that) but there's no denying the fact that the comic is very entertaining. Most of the matches and fight scenes are fun to read and (if you haven't read the fanfic, I guess) it keeps you guessing til the end. It's one of the few webcomics I read regularly.

After that is the Lunch Box, an anthology of short stories about Lunch and Tenshinhan. I think it was my first DB doujin.

And finally... and this will be a surprise to no one... the Dragon Ball H series! A collection of DB related erotic stories and pictures by the artist Garland (circle name is Rehabilitation). This series inspires me to draw all the naughty DB comics I want and then some.

Well... I don't think this counts, but Kaboom's GT revised.
Vegeta: "Funny... I seem to recall Kakarot being fed the same information right before he transformed; the distinct look on your faces when he went Super Saiyan didn't exactly inspire confidence. One does not predict or calculate power like ours."

I've saw scans for "The Episode of Bulma". The art was great but overall it was kind of a let down, for me anyway.

Toyble's was kinda the "first" and holds some special significance for me. Its kinda sad that his working on DBHeroes Victory Mission has halted his work entirely. Sure there are some issues with it, like bringing back Broly and following animated canon, but it has its finer points as well.

Young Jijii's is in the boat too. It kinda bugs me that he/she copiesentire pages almost frame for frame, but I like the characters he/she came up with (though they seem kinda weak, but thats good. Not every villain should be a Broly wannabe). The only other thing that irks me is that he/she took the Toyble SSJ5 instead of making their own.

Honorable mentions to DB EX and my friend Elyas' DB doujin. Its not as well known, but fun to read for me :)

Out of all the fan series I have seen, I think you and I are the only ones that dont have the standard white/grey hair and fur SSJ5. You going with the all forms rolled into one design and my simplistic form pattern. How is Elyas doing by the way? I havent seen much updates from him in a while.

Alternate Universe/Timeline would be wisest. Your story is a separate universe from DBZ, mine is as well. Bulma could build it, shes done time machines and watches that shrink people I'm sure she can pull off a universe traveling ship.

I'd have to go with Young Jijii. Yes, I know there are a lot of "tracings", but they are still great "edits". I could honestly careless if the character strike the same poses. The story itself is still different, the characters look much different, and best of all. His work looks more like an "actual" manga than the rest.
Toyble is great too, but it looks more like a black and white version of anime screenshots. Still great, but it doesn't have the "manga" feel too it.
True, the Broly returning thing can be annoying for some, but they could try to shift things around to make him "canon" to the original story.
Honestly, I don't see why it couldn't fit. Didn't Goku and friends have a week or 2 to train and relax before the Cell Games? That's obviously when it happened, seeing how Trunks is still there, everyone is enjoying some peaceful times in the beginning, and Gohan can become a SSj1.
Also, remember that Bio-Broly isn't the same as regular Broly. The original was dead in Hell while Bio-Broly was running around, so I don't see why it would be impossible for him to come back. Even him reaching SSj3 like in the video games...or at least SSj2 at this point doesn't seem impossible at all. :?

Another thing I love about Young Jijii is that while Goku remains a important part of the plot, he has NEVER been in a battle yet. We know that Goku is gonna put down Xicor in Toyble's AF. Every villain so far in YJ's version has been killed by the other fighters and I love that. It gives everyone a chance and he makes them pull it off very well. I admit Trunks and Goten achieving SSJ2 and 3 is iffy but ill wait till the translation for that.

I also enjoy Xicor/Zaiko even if he seems corny. He makes a better villain than Ize at least.
