Well...Timmy's Dad-ku lasted a little over a week at least, but now I'm back to sporting a Kuririn avatar. This picture just screamed 'AVATAR-IZE ME', so I had to do it. It comes from a page in Malik's Dragon Ball New Age comic in the fanworks section (well, and DeviantArt too).

I know, I'm a Kuririn nut. A Kuririn...chestnut. *waits for someone to get it and...probably not laugh...but still worth it*

My avatar is Ireland's Tommy Bowe intercepting a pass from Australia's Quade Cooper during their pool C game at RWC 2011. For the record, Ireland won 15-6. :D

If something is truly perfect, that's IT! The bottom line becomes there is no room for imagination! No space for intelligence or ability or improvement! Do you understand? To men of science like us, perfection is a dead end, a condition of hopelessness. Always strive to be better than anything that came before you but not perfect! Scientist's agonize over the attempt to achieve perfection! That's the kind of creatures we are! We take joy in trying to exceed our grasp, in trying to reach for something that in the end, we have to admit may in fact be unreachable!"

I couldn't resist to not make this Super Saiyan God Goku my avatar.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

This one's a fairly ancient piece of fan art that dates back around late '93 and that's always stuck with me since then as incredibly well done. It makes for a cool looking/unique image that also distinctly represents my general era of fandom. I think my main reason for posting here today is just as a flimsy excuse to use it.

But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

I hate Machismo's avatar and pissed on him a little bit in the comments somewhere long ago.

I really do hate it though.
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

This one's from an issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly. DBZ fan art was a pretty common sight in its letters section back in the early 90's.

I used to post on here a lot a few years back, and one of my recurring themes as a very, very tired old fuck was constantly reminding a lot of the starry-eyed innocents around here that both this particular franchise as well as anime in general were nowhere remotely near as obscure and unknown to Westerners and English speakers 20+ years back as so many younger fans today seem to mistakenly (and kind of stubbornly/irritatingly) believe.

Anyway, here's the whole thing uncropped:

Image

Pretty gorgeous and stuck with me for 20 years for a reason.
