"Who Wants To Be A Superhero?" is the only one I've read so far that I don't have a thousand problems with.
The Monkey King wrote:It was actually Beerus disguised as Zarbon #StayWokeRandomGuy96 wrote:He's probably referring to the Bardock special. Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.
Re: What do you think is the best fancomic?
My only problem is that there is no schedule. I want to see this comic story finish and then have many different tales like this.RandomGuy96 wrote:"Who Wants To Be A Superhero?" is the only one I've read so far that I don't have a thousand problems with.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!
Spoiler:
Re: What do you think is the best fancomic?
My list is as follows:
1. Toyble's Final Chapter - I'm positively stupefied by the lack of it in the discussion so far. For me there's no better ending to the franchise. It provides a wonderful sense of closure to the whole story - whether the reader happens to enjoy GT and AF or not.
2. Wrong Time - a completely believable what-if (what if Bulma put the wrong date in the time machine), wonderfully designed, horribly slow in publication (like one page every few months).
3. Dragon Ball Multiverse - for the sheer scope of the project (and Salagir's perseverance in pursuing it) as well as the story which I find enjoyable. I've never bothered about powerlevels so this issue is lost on me. Here I'm also probably a bit partial - I've been translating DBM into Polish since October 2008 (i. e. it will soon be five years) and it would be impossible for me not to get attached to it. Nevertheless I'd probably like it more or less the same even if I wasn't translating it
4. Who wants to be a superhero? - It's a great funny fan-manga but I don't happen to enjoy it as much as I enjoy the former ones (or Kaboom's GTR fanfic for that matter).
5. Universe F was good - well designed, with a great type of humour. The problem is it was abbandoned too soon for any real story to begin...
As for all the AF stuff - I only enjoy the one by Toyble and really only the fourth volume - I like the clever plot device of I don't enjoy the other AF and AF-like stories - Young Jiji, DBNA, DBEX etc - in the slightest. They all seem just a string of uninteresting battles with a cheesy excuse for a plot. I can understand their appeal though - my 14-year-old self (the time when I got into Dragon Ball ten years ago) would love them above everything else. I've grown up quite a bit by now and enjoy different stuff...
I figured that I might as well name some more interesting fan-comics. I enjoy the following but I wouldn't call them "the best fancomic".
- Dragon Ball Zero by Toyble. Well-drawn, fills in an undescribed part of the story. My problem with it is that I find it a little bit boring.
- Elsewhere- sorry that I link to a French version but RMK's site seems to have disappeared and the Internet Archive doesn't have the pictures. "Elsewhere" has a great story but not so great pictures. It's the only fan-comic I know of (apart from Multiverse) that gives the human characters their due and tries to imagine an interesting and coherent story for them.
- Tsufurs and Legacy of Gohan - quite well (if stiffly) drawn by Stef84 who did the first two universe 3 special chapters for DBM. They have more or less the same objective - to fill in the missing parts of the story (here the defeat of the Tsufuls by the Saiyans and the "taming of Goku" by Grandpa Gohan).
- Revelations - nice, funny but I prefer longer stories - not one-page gags.
- Pallottili's one shots - the same problem
- Gracias is somewhat better but has an addditional problem of cutting one plot, going to another, going back to the pas of the first plot and so on (it could benefit from a rearrangement on the website)
- Ankoku - the other side of the problem: a great story and horrible pictures. Goten-kun didn't know at all how to draw when he began it (he's a bit better at it now - still not very good) but he had a great story in mind. It's worth to suffer through those horrible drawings to read this great story (if one happens to know French).
- Dragon Ball SF and Lone Wolf Howling - more or less the same problem (though BK-81 is a lot better than Goten-kun). The first one is a nice alternative universe (there's also a fanfic and it's even better), the second - a story about Bulma and Yamcha breaking up. A pity both were discontinued.

Re: What do you think is the best fancomic?
Well my favourite manga is Dragon ball New Age hands down. The plot is very original and just is not a revival or random power fest.
"There are many types of monsters that scare me: Monsters who cause troubles without showing themselves, monsters who abduct children, monsters who devour dreams, monsters who suck blood… and then, monsters who tell nothing but lies. Lying monsters are a real nuisance: They are much more cunning than others: They pose as humans even though they have no understanding of the human heart; they eat even though they’ve never experienced hunger; they study even though they have no interest in academics; they seek friendship even though they do not know how to love. If I were to encounter such monsters, I would likely be eaten by them… because in truth, I am that monster."

Re: What do you think is the best fancomic?
The plot's not original. The Rigor saga was just "strong guy appears, he must be defeated, everyone gets defeated, strong dude gets defeated" and the Aladjinn saga is extremely similar to the Majin Buu saga. And Vegeta getting possessed isn't original at all.enjyu123 wrote:Well my favourite manga is Dragon ball New Age hands down. The plot is very original and just is not a revival or random power fest.
And not another power fest? Rigor was nearly omnipotent and we're given more Super Saiyan forms.

Re: What do you think is the best fancomic?
I never said he couldn't. I'm saying that his saga was nothing original as it just followed the "strong guy appears, must be defeated, defeats everyone and gets defeated in the end" template. Also, more Saiyans? Not original. He has been training for 61 years and that rage he has with him in that time and your saying he can't achieve that level, If Goku and Vegeta can why can't he. Also HE is the child of the PRINCE of ALL SAIYANS so expect no less in power levels.. Well not exactly 61 years.
Well if you read later chapters Aladjinn is the lord of lords so they can take control of people's body so it all ties in well and Vegeta just happened to be there at that time to save his daughter. Also I prefer Vegeta being a villan DBZ feels so much darker and nostalgic that way.[/quote]
Possessing people has already been done before in the series.

Re: What do you think is the best fancomic?
The Lord of Lords were never shown to have possessive powers or share life with the Universe. Rigor being sent away as the main reason he survived isn't original - Goku, Vegeta, Raditz, Nappa, Turles, Broly, Paragus and Tarble survived for the same reason. Rigor also was defeated by Gogeta. Not killed, but defeated.enjyu123 wrote:Spoiler:

No if you have been reading dragon ball NA he says they CONTROL the whole galaxy and if one of the 4 of them die the universe would not exist. As for Rigor he was not defeated to Gogeta he was defeated by the time limit of super saiyan 5 otherwise he won. Everything can't be original that is like saying don't have any villians or heroes because it is not original, your stating one point and saying the manga is not original. Why don't you make a ALL ORIGINAL manga and we'll see how that turns out bud.

Hes saying total originality, as in something never seen or done before, is dead. Its like saying there will be no more original music made because humans can only hear so many sounds. Here's my thoughts on fanmangas, with more detail.
Here's my thoughts on fancomics that are meant to be followups to either the manga or GT:
Toyble's Dragonball AF: The best fanmanga I've read so far. It actually feels like it could be a sequel to Dragonball GT and is much better than GT at the same time. It also collects several ideas fans came up with for AF but never jumps the shark at the same time. If only it got more updates though.
Young Jijii's Dragonball AF: Unfortunately, this comic isn't very good. None of the story arcs seem well polished; the Ize arc has little to any depth, for one. It's literally just about an extremely powerful enemy who shows up, beats up everyone but is defeated at the end of the day. That would make for a decent Dragonball feature film, but not a good Dragonball story arc. The same with the Marble arc. While the new Shadow Dragon arc has more depth and feels like more like a Dragonball story arc, having two Shadow Dragon arcs taking place in the same timeline is unneeded. The Shadow Dragons also seem blander this time; many of the ones in GT had elemental traits, which was interesting. And a ton of the artwork is copied, which is no good. This comic has some good ideas, like having a more grown Pan and Uub seeming to have an "evil" form. Vegeta, Gohan, Goten, Trunks and Uub are also stepping their game up, which is cool. But that's really it.
Malik_DBNA's Dragonball New Age: Perhaps the worst fancomic I've actively read. Honestly, it's very overrated. There's a ton wrong with it. First of all, it takes place after GT but makes Goku's sacrifice in the Shadow Dragons saga completely pointless as Goku is brought back to life and things go back to the way they used to almost as if nothing happened. At least Toyble and even Young Jijii's DBAFs still maintained the significance of Goku's sacrifice. Killing off Krillin and having him become much stronger in the afterlife was also unnecessary and seems too over the top. Having yet another set of Dragonballs in this timeline is redundant at this point (we got the Black Star Dragonballs already. We don't need another set of Dragonballs). Rigor is also an unoriginal and predictable villain; he's yet another powerful Saiyan and similarly to the Ize arc in Young Jijii's Dragonball AF, his story arc is just him showing up, beating up everyone and getting defeated at the end of the day. Had Rigor not have been another Saiyan (seeing as that's too similar to Broly), that would only make for a decent Dragonabll feature film. There are even more Saiyans here, which is just unnecessary. In the Aladjinn saga, where Vegeta gets possessed yet AGAIN by the villain, which is just too repetitive and unoriginal. Aladjinn seems to have a lot of depth, though, and it would have been great if there was a lot focus put on Uub during that arc. Unfortunately, with Uub dead and Vegeta being Aladjinn's host, I think the ship has sailed for Uub in this comic. This comic also tries to remove some of the inconsistencies and plotholes in GT, and even though that seems to be pointless, is nice I guess.
Salagir's Dragonball Multiverse: Its concept and premise is quite amateurish, but its execution is pretty good. There are some parts that I really would have done differently, but overall, it's a good comic.
The world's greatest.
