Such celebrations and "reviews of the past" are common at funerals.
If you really want to be as pedantic as possible, sure. However, in a generic western view of a funeral, it's generally a somber experience. My point is, GT's ending is not.
GT's ending was inherently sad. That was the basic point that MCDaveG was making. And that's true. Its basically saying, "its the end, look how far we've come, all the moments we lived through, but now it all ends, farewell".
Its beautiful, but sad.
The best ending IMO is the one from Dragon Ball.
(And I don't think you quite understood what I meant regarding the funerals. Its not uncommon in western funerals to have someone talk about the deceased, his life, what he accomplished, etc. This is done to celebrate the deceased and review his past and what he meant to his family and friends now that he is gone. GT's ending feels similar to that, we feel that is the ultimate farewell and its sad because of it).

It's both a fantastic ending and the least Akira Toriyama-esque moment in the entire franchise*. Toriyama didn't write GT and it shows -- the GT ending is something completely un-Toriyama-esque. It's so beautiful and emotional it makes the DBZ ending look like a f***ing joke.
*Yes, even DB Evolution was closer to Toriyama's storytelling style than the GT ending.

While the GT ending is un-Toriyama-esque, I'm okay with that. The Z ending is great, but I prefer the kind of ending that GT had, in this particular case. And even though it doesn't fit with Toriyama's style of storytelling...one could argue that most of GT didn't, either.

I'm unhappy with the episode itself. I think Dragon Ball always should end with Goku's happy smile and his very pure excitement about future battles with stronger guys. However, Goku seems very lifeless and out of character throughout the final episode, and I don't even understand what happened to him. It feels very un-Toriyama-esque and unpleasant. Also, his statue at the Tenkaichi Budokai arena feels unnecessary and gives off a negative vibe to me. He is a hero whom no one knows, but "we" do. I don't like the idea of him being considered as a hero by common people.
I have to agree with
kei17 here. In fact, I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who absolutely hated the ending when I first saw it. I watched GT again a few years ago, and my opinion has changed on the ending but not by much. The ending felt very un-Dragon Ball like (if that makes any sense). Don't get me wrong, it was a well written ending that was quite moving but it didn't feel uplifting or satisfying in the spirit of the series. Hell, even the ending to DBZ felt more in tuned with the story. Sure it was far, faaaaaaaar from perfect, but Goku's excited attitude and enthusiasm was heart warming. And it ended with a sense of "the adventure will always continue".
GT ended with "The adventure is over now. Time to say your good-byes and go home".

I thought the ending wasnt too bad, I actually loved the montage, I could watch it over and over again. Sure it could have been improved, but its still fine. The thing is, the Funimation dub completely fucked it up, it didnt have the dan dan track, and there was talking from the characters in the montage. There was also no Japanese text scroll, which is another huge downer, but that is due to the fact that Funimation wasn't able to grab the older master tapes.
Overall, I thought it was Funimation that made it seem worse than it really is. I think this is a particular ending, Blue Water completely excelled at. They beat Funimation in every aspect, from audio, music, to having the Original Japanese Credits in-tact.

If you have any Canadian dubbed recorded material and would like to preserve it, please PM me!

I'm in the UK so when I first saw it when it aired here it was the Blue Water dub, and, after watching DBZ and GT over the last several years (but not DB as that didn't air until after GT) I thought it was wonderful. Since then I've seen bits of Funi's dub of GT, including the ending, and it disgusts me.
