Character cutting and pasting

I am starting to make my first AMV, and was wondering, how do you make the effect where you have an animated character from a certain scene in an anime pasted over a different background. Do you simply cut out each character using Photoshop/Fireworks and paste each frame of your character above the new background, or is there another way?

Well it's one way to do it. It's depends what program you using to make your AMV.
