Not only are they freaky skinny, but Goku's eye-style looks completely different...
This looks MUCH more like a fan-art...
While still good, Toriyama REALLY lost his old style. :/ Might as well let the new girl take over completely for the art, but keep him around for storyboard and script.

Yeah Goku and everyone else really do look off, plus I think making him and every one else super skinny was a mistake. When I think Dragon Ball and especially Z the first thing that comes to my mind is training and getting swole! I think lifting heavy weights and eating a ton...not non stop cardio...the characters look like they run cross country.
Vegeta especially in this pic and the movie got shafted, his shoulders are way smaller than they were at the end of the series, I'm mainly thinking of during the Cell arc when everyone got jacked, but still.

I can see that, although I'd say they at least look marginally proportionate here and damn, muscles exist at a size that makes sense!
Assuming this is new art done for the DS version and not art from 1995 jazzed up!
That's definitely new art for the DS version. It uses the same line art on the hair and the same shading as the art for DQ IX.

Is this a 'bulk' thing? Like how in one of the more recent Kyoryuger episodes, Red gets a very nice scene showing how ripped he is and the general Western response was "oh no hes skinny eww not enough muscles rippling"? Really don't get that myself.

Yeah, everyone's looking pretty anorexic, particularly the ladies.
Kuririn looks like he's wearing a toupee.

Wow, now
that looks like Toriyama's work, and is a fine evolution of his style. What the hell happened with Battle of Gods? Did he suddenly decide "I'm going to completely change my style and proportions", or did he just not give a crap because he's tired of Dragon Ball?

I love his artstyle since works like Dragon Boy or Dr. Slump and also like how he progresses. I really enjoyed Sand World for example or Neko Majin, but I can say that this last portion of art I saw in BOG concepts and this poster kinda bugs me.
I really don't like this artstyle since that special cinema ticket.
But! In Jaco The Galactic Patrolman, the art feels as Toriyama to me again. So I'm kinda puzzled. It looks like he really hates Dragon Ball nowadays and it's projected into his drawings, or I really don't know.
FighterZ, Street Fighter 6, Mortal Kombat: Funky_Strudel

Trust me, I'm millenial and a designer.

I get the feeling he
knows fans hate this and he's doing exactly what he did when people whined about his change from a rounded style into more angular work. He made everything even more angular! Now everyone's getting skinnier and their head is getting larger - it will never end.

If you look at Vegeta here (yes, this is a drawing by Toriyama), he is small but not disproportionate. He is swole with a proper head size and proper head alignment with his body. He looks perfect.
Compare that to the OP's post..... yeah. What the hell happened?
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

What I don't like most is how small Fat Buu is. He looks like a dumpling.

That Dragon Quest image looks fine and very much like Toriyama's other recent artwork, like on the Kanzenban and these:

It's obviously intentional, Toriyama would never forget the style he used for so long. I do admit, it's very off for what he usually draws, the characters look different, Goku's face in particular, almost as if someone else drew it. The style he used for the Kanzenban covers (I would say) was the best overall, it's basically his original style evolved and touched up to perfection, there's no flaws at all, everything's spot on, the clothing, the facial expressions, the proportions, every strand of hair, he must have been aiming for the perfect finish that the title Kanzenban is relating to.
So I don't really like the 2013 style he's using currently, but I guess we're lucky to be getting any DB art from the master at all I guess!

I like the second image a lot, but the first one has the characters too skinny again, and regular Goku is wearing Yamcha's outfit.

I can relate. I draw things too, I had characters I used to draw, but I draw differently (better) nowadays (countless life drawing classes/being at an art school), so the characters, or whatever, that I still draw won't look the same. SO in Toriyama's case, he got used to his newer style, and just applies it to everything he draws. He won't see it as, I guess, "the wrong look".

For the record, most of the
Dragon Quest official/promotional artwork is done by
Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru (or at least it was last time I checked)... so that's why it looks more like Toriyama's work than Toriyama's work does

Well shit, now I'm questioning what the last thing Toriyama drew that remotely resembled that style was?!
That's interesting to know though - especially considering his message at the end of Jaco about how this would likely be his last time drawing by himself. One would hope if he ever revisits the series, he would have someone who can actually draw how he used to do it.

What do you mean "this would likely be his last time drawing by himself,"?

I don't think there's any mystery to it, and that is just how he draws now. I'm sure he probably drew some Dr. Slump characters in 1995 that look nothing like they did in the '80s, and some Slump fans were bummed about that.
