There are many moments that I think this dub did best such as when Piccolo dies protecting Gohan. Scott McNeil nailed that scene as well as Saffron Henderson. It's one of those moments that despite the mention of the other dimension the acting is so good you just don't care.

Yeah, I totally agree. McNeil absolutely nails Piccolo's character - I mean, sure, he can be a little harsh at times but he's certainly my favourite English language Piccolo. Same for Drummond as Vegeta, he's perhaps a fraction too high pitched at times but he's far more natural sounding than Sabat ever will be. That truly arrogant and aristocratic tone to his voice is just perfect for Vegeta and he nails it!

I just wish Kelamis had been Goku the entire way through. Having rewatched the first three movies with his portrayal, I can't listen to anyone else, he's just great.

Speaking of Scott McNeil's Piccolo, let's not forget this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krrJ3ccfnUI 8)

Oh, and weren't there fans that were complaining when FUNimation brought in their own voice actors for season 3?

Oh hell yeah!! Seriously, that scene is great!

One thing I think Ocean nailed was Gohan too. I compare even Clinkenbeard's Gohan to Henderson's is that Henderson has the right inflections and pitch for a 5 year old unlike Clinkenbeard. Kai's Gohan is more suitable for an older child around 12 or 13, but not 5 or 6. Clinkenbeard does not have those inflections that 5 year old children do either (I can't explain it, but it's just there when you hear Henderson as Gohan. It really does sound like a 5 year old speaking!)
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

Yep. Region 1, 2 and 4. I've almost finished watching the whole thing on my UK PS3.

Something I only noticed when watching this set: when Kami dies Popo says Kami-san, Kami-san. I was a bit surprised they went with the Japanese honorifics back in 1996 but it's a nice touch.

It should have just been "Kami-sama" as it was in Japanese, but it was the thought that counted!

There was also Goku's response to the oni of, "It's not kung-fu, though, it's the Kame-Sen'nin style of martial arts" (I may be wrong about the exact wording; can't remember if he said "though"). We were all pretty much collectively spitting up through our noses hearing such faithful stuff.

This reminds me of the scene with Roshi on the toilet talking to Goku from Otherworld and Roshi refers to him as "Son" a couple of times. I have to wonder was this actually intended to be Roshi using his Japanese name or was he just calling him son as many old people call younger men. Maybe it was intentionally done as a joke like Buu saying "Saiya-Jin" in the dub.

I have much more appreciation for that kind of stuff now than I did back in the day, though that was because I was unaware more than anything else. I was grinning from check to check when I heard those Popo and Goku lines.

Tough to know. He did pronounce it as sun rather than sawn, which kinda implies he isn't referring to Goku's surname. That would be interesting if it was intended as a joke though.

"Sawn"? Son is pronounced "sone", or like "sewn".

I was trying to avoid the 'sone' spelling because I thought the pronunciation of that spelling could be interpreted differently than I intended. But you put it better than I did anyway.

I remember hearing Kami-san and though it was cool. Didn't pick up on the "Goku" pronunciation though, I'll have to check that out.

Does anyone change their settings on VLC when you watch the discs? I didn't really notice the color did I got the arrival single lol. So now I do lol.

I did not really notice the color/contrast until I got the arrival single. But now I do. lol

Then I posted a pic of a screen shot using modded VLC color and contrast to try and make it more like the singles. I was more tired than I thought lol

After seeing the posts from people who had this set I was expecting the copy I pre-ordered from RightStuf months ago to turn up any day, but it turns out RightStuf cancelled my order so I've had to order it again from Amazon, and now it'll probably be another month or something until it gets here :(

I swear I've had so many problems ordering from RightStuf that it just isn't funny.

Don't worry about it. I was just legitimately confused is all. Happens to all of us at some point.

I finished the Ocean "Rock the Dragon" set and I have to say that it surpassed all my expectations. This wasn't "nostalgia" we're talking about. It was great. I'm only disappointing at the fact that the series was discontinued with this cast. I hate having an unfinished product though, so I'm thinking of selling it on Amazon. I'll keep my Kai Blu Rays as the current "definitive" English version.
