What do you want in a 2D game?
I create games in my spare time and use Unity3D, now that Unity will be shipping soon with 2D tools (to be honest I do not like half of what's in the asset store...) I think I'll create a Dragon Ball RPG. And please not this is not my first game, I've been doing this sort of thing since the 90s when C++ was practically required!
With something like dragon ball I've look at several types of games, rpgs, platformers, adventure games, but the genre that would most fit the series would be an action-rpg and what was the closest thing that we got to that? Remember the Legacy of Goku games? However the battle system was crude, it really wasn't fast paced, you couldn't fly outside the world map screen?... and most important there was no sense of any martial arts, kai deflection, and beam struggles which would have made LOG pretty awesome and the GBA was more than capable of doing it... except the games may have been cut back due to the larger code, map openness, and constant changing environments. I really think the closest we got to a 2D DB game is honestly the 3 famicom titles, and the super gokuden series to some extent(wasn't fast paced or anything but it could have worked with some extra umph).
With computers these days the task is surprisingly obtainable with only a few people, as once the game kit is actually built than building the game would not take long but DB is a large spectrum and I would like to explore other universes as apparently there's 12 of course that wouldn't be in story mode though.
What do you think should be in a Action-RPG based on the Dragon Ball series? Even creating a more complex legacy of goku would technically be a start.
For those that do not know about Unity3d you can find more info at it's webpage http://www.unity3d.com/
and the 2D tools announcement http://blogs.unity3d.com/2013/08/28/uni ... -2d-tools/

I'm all for a more complex LOG game so hell yeah!

It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.
Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

A new Super Butouden game with hand drawn spites by Toei animators and fluent animation. I think the game could also make it to tournaments.
Re: What do you want in a 2D game?
My main issue with everything that's come so far is that it feels poorly directed. There's no sense of wonder or drive there, you just have objectives to do and that's that. I would love some beautifully drawn sprites and backgrounds with appropriately placed music that just brings you into the world in the same way that Zelda manages to.
I think you've got the right idea gameplay wise, I just hope it doesn't feel too forced and awkward in a 2D setting. I'd rather settle for less as long as it felt more fluid and tactile.
Sounds like you've got some good ideas going on so good luck!

Re: What do you want in a 2D game?
I started working on graphics a little while ago, I thought about just modeling and flat rendering them into 2d sprites but I love hand drawing them out so everything in game is pretty much drawn out pixel by pixel.. which is extremely tedious but fun.

I decided to do just a basic step instead of the side step you would normally see, LOG had it bud I personally never like it like that and also LOG2 made the house pretty flat but that could just have been the reference they referred to as there are many references that make it appear short and flat and others tall.

I want to see either a 2-D sprite-based fighter done by Arc System Works (Guilty Gear/BlazBlue) or Capcom (Street Fighter/MvC), or a 2-D action-adventure/RPG game done with the Ubi Art Engine (Rayman Legends/Child of Light).
None of these will ever happen, but I can always be a hoper & dreamer, can't I?

I can license the Ubi art engine but it's damn freaking expensive... Do you have $15,000 laying around? I don't wish I did though.theoriginalbilis wrote:I want to see either a 2-D sprite-based fighter done by Arc System Works (Guilty Gear/BlazBlue) or Capcom (Street Fighter/MvC), or a 2-D action-adventure/RPG game done with the Ubi Art Engine (Rayman Legends/Child of Light).

Do you have a bigger version of that Gokuu sprite? It looks great!Daimo-Rukiri wrote:I started working on graphics a little while ago, I thought about just modeling and flat rendering them into 2d sprites but I love hand drawing them out so everything in game is pretty much drawn out pixel by pixel.. which is extremely tedious but fun.

Re: What do you want in a 2D game?
What would be great for a game, either 2D or 3D, is an RPG over world but when entering a battle we would have a fighter game, like a street fighter, Budokai, or Budokai Tenkaichi. I think that would be amazing.
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

That would be beautiful. But alas, will never happen. I'd love to see what kind of extra missions/story aspects they would add to the Freeza/Cell arcs...DarkPrince_92 wrote:A sequel to Attack of the Saiyans.

It still makes me sad that there's no sequel to that game. I can think of a few side missions, though.theoriginalbilis wrote:That would be beautiful. But alas, will never happen. I'd love to see what kind of extra missions/story aspects they would add to the Freeza/Cell arcs...
There'd probably be missions before leaving for Earth that maybe revisit AotS plot lines, and Goku could visit Kanassa like he did in that NES game, they could visit Fake Namek and/or do stuff with that Mirror Spaceship and maybe even freeing their planet, they could have Tien, Yamcha and Piccolo doing stuff in Otherworld like they did with Goku in AotS (they could have to deal with a powered up Raditz and Nappa, and fight each villain as they are killed on Namek, along with other stuff).
On Namek they could find more villages or even do a bit of exploring while traveling (like the few days Krillin and Gohan spend going to Guru's place), you could find ancient Namekian ruins, maybe underwater ruins with that Crab as a boss (you could go fight it instead of Bulma to retrieve the Dragon Ball), and you could even fight Lord Slug and his minnions in one of these ruins. Secret boss could be Cooler. I can also imagine them opening a portal between Earth and Namek before the final fight, where you can go and explore more on Earth before finishing, and you could fight Garlic Jr. or even enter the Dead Zone and fight his father.
But, yeah. They may even be able to make a whole game out of just Freeza's saga. I just want something... but I'm pretty sure there won't be a sequel. One for the 3ds would be very, very nice, though.

I would love total LOG edition, from first Dragon Ball as there is tons of adventure, trough the Z.
