Favorite voice for Vegeta?

Re: Favorite voice for Vegeta?
It's a tough call between Ryo Horikawa and Chris Sabat as they both play the character so so well but so differently. I lean more to Sabat because I love the way he says "Prince of all Saiyans" and "WHAT CLOWN!?!?"
"You might think you know everything there is to know about me, but really, you're not even CLOSE."

How I enjoy the anime:

Re: Favorite voice for Vegeta?
1. Ryo Horikawa's Z peformance. Smug, regal, and always had this "I'm better than you" tinge to his voice. The definitive voice of the "Prince of Sai-yan".
2. Christopher R. Sabat's Kai performance. He's definitely grown since 1999. Starting out as a bad impression of a voice wrong for Vegeta in the first place to a generic angry guy. Old man yelling at a tree I believe it's been called? In Kai, he really stepped up his game and gave the proud prince an English performance he'd be proud of. The performance still has it's hiccups here and there but overall it's the best English Vegeta to date.
3. Brian Drummond. I will never understand to appeal of this performance. Be it the Funi-Saban dub or the Westwood dub it is completely unsuitable. He doesn't sound like a regal prince, he sounds like he belongs in a straight jacket in a padded cell. Hopefully he's undergone MAJOR changes for his Kai performance. Like I've said before, Zechs voice or GTFO.
4. Roger Rhodes (Blue Water GT). An even worse Drummond impression than Sabat's Season 3 attempt. Literally sounds like he's gargling gravel half the time. But he's a Blue Water voice actor so what did you expect, a decent performance?

My opinion
Ryo Horikawa
Chris Sabat in Kai= Brian Drummond in early Z. Drummond Vegeta in the later arcs is a bit iffy at times.

You know, it was late in the night, and I was being irrational. I take back what I said for the most part. Especially the fanwank thing... That was extremely out of character of me. So sorry. I rarely do that, especially on the forum (if at all). I apologize.jjgp1112 wrote:Most people who are saying Chris Sabat are taking into consideration his most recent work, which hasn't been around for very long. The rest of this post just comes off as irrational, borderline martyr-dom for the Ocean dub. Just because Drummond didn't have the largest body of work doesn't mean it's not possible to objectively compare the two.
And since when is praising someone "fanwank?" I'm sorry, but that's just incredibly biased.
However, I see why Drummond might not be preferred by some. It's too over the top in many instances, but then again, that was what he had to work with due to the direction DBZ was taken.
Sabat, see why he is appealing, I guess. I use to really enjoy his performance. However, I feel that his voice inflections are too monotonous and don't necessarily portray the character properly during selective scenes. He just comes off as being too gruff or too annoyed when that is not always the case. Actually, I think that is what TFS played off of a lot during the first season. Sabat's Vegeta has a lack of regal quality to it or a sense of cunning; these traits, however, exude Vegeta's real personality.. Sabat's Vegeta sounds annoyed all of the time.
Oh, and Horikawa is not as low in his voice for Vegeta as Sabat is. Horikawa is not lacking in any trait of Vegeta. At all. He sounds like a prude when he speaks

My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada
Re: Favorite voice for Vegeta?
Yeah but most of the Japanese cast isn't as low as the English casts are. For instance the pitch between Goku and Vegeta is probably closer in the Funi dub than it is the Japanese since... you know, Goku is voiced by a woman in the original.Attitudefan wrote:

Re: Favorite voice for Vegeta?
My favorite is Ryo Horikawa by far. In fact I credit him for making Vegeta my favorite character. Back when I was younger and all I knew was the Funimation dub I used to hate Vegeta because Sabat played him constantly as a loud mouthed jerk. When I finally began watching the show on Japanese years ago it was the nuance Horikawa brought to the character that drew me to Vegeta. It was like I was seeing a whole new character since I feel that the difference between Horikawa and Sabat is by far the biggest difference between voice actors in the show. I mean that simply in terms of the way the roles were interpreted and not as a quality judgment.
Re: Favorite voice for Vegeta?
Personally I liked Drummond when he was over the top in the Saban dub. It was only in the Westwood dub when he toned it down that I felt he wasn't that good. I guess he didn't really have much choice though seeing as Vegeta was no longer a villain. I guess it doesn't really help that Toriyama wrote Vegeta as a bit of an annoying character in the Cyborg/Cell arc either eg. his constant cocky/angry attitude and always thinking he's the best even when he's clearly outclassed and irrelevant powerwise.

Re: Favorite voice for Vegeta?
It seems some think because Vegeta's small in the Saiyan arc, his deep voice isn't fitting, I disagree. I've heard small people with relatively deep voices.
I think Sabat's rasp works for Vegeta.

I'd say Sabat but that's probably because I've only really watched FUNimation Dubs (I am trying Ocean Dubs and while Scott is good, Sabat still fits the character more for me) and never tried Japanese Dubs.

Re: Favorite voice for Vegeta?
I just cannot have an opinion on Horikawa when I don't know a lick of Japanese. The voice itself sounds rather "right" for Vegeta, but who's to say the articulation and whatnot is any good unless you're a fluent Japanese speaker?

I agree with this actually. People are always bashing the English VAs and praising the Japanese ones but how can you fairly judge their delivery if you can't understand each individual word?Cursed Lemon wrote:I just cannot have an opinion on Horikawa when I don't know a lick of Japanese. Because it's more about the delivery than the individual words.

It's not like the Academy Award for Best Actor is given out each year to the person who spoke the clearest, most technically proficient English on film! You definitely don't need to understand the individual words to judge the quality of the acting. Besides, I'm pretty sure Horikawa does indeed know how to speak Japanese so I don't think we really need to worry about whether or not he is saying the right words!

I agree with Sabat's use of derogatory statements. But why hasn't anyone mentioned TFS voice for Vegeta (the name escapes me at the moment)? In my head now, it's the only voice I can hear. The snark is perfect. And the rasp - while really a stab at Sabat is somehow more fitting. Like he was choked out too many times. Although, maybe it's the lines themselves. *starts watching again*

Lanipator, I believe? Again, I have no idea on real name though - I'm terrible with remembering the real names of people I know or know of online only.Selcier wrote:But why hasn't anyone mentioned TFS voice for Vegeta (the name escapes me at the moment)? I like his Vegeta, it works perfectly for what TFS does (and does so well), but I figure it wasn't being brought up as much because people were mostly thinking of 'official' production voices. That would be my guess anyway.

Re: Favorite voice for Vegeta?
Sabat's the best dub actor, but Horikawa's amazing all around. I enjoy Drummond's work, and his intensity is unmatched by even Horikawa, but it sounds like a villain's voice.

Ryo Horikawa is vegeta in my eyes, if I had to pick an english vegeta then Brian Drummond.
It is clear that sometime in Mark Satan's life, he acquired the dragon balls and called upon shenlong to grant him immortality.
