Don't get me wrong, I've definitely enjoyed Jaco for what it is - or rather, what I've read about what it is (I've still only read the first chapter myself) - it's just the nerdy side of my brain debating on these things because I want them to work as it's even more history to add to the mythos.

AT incorporated Bardock (which he created himself, even if for a movie) and Planet Vegeta's destruction by Freeza (which was his own idea), just with Bardock opposing him, so there isn't much of Bardock TV special in that flashback. It surely is a reference to the movie, but I figure it's because AT sort of liked the TV special (and admitted he wouldn't have thought of making Bardock's story like that), but not because he accepts it as having actually happened in his own story (besides the panels that were references). Bardock TV special has Vegeta with a fringe and BOG has kid Vegeta with a widow's peak, if that means anything.

When Raditz is thinking of Kakarrot on the last page of chapter #196 he thinks of Gokuu as a baby, so I think that is meant to imply when Gokuu was sent to Earth.

I wonder how Toei will inevitably handle this comic? An OVA series would be nice, unless they tried to play to the naughtier aspects of Toriyama and made a late-night adaption of the comic.

A few things:
1. I wonder if this version of Goku is stronger than the Goku at the begining of Dragon Ball. Similar to how when Captain Ginyu was in Goku's body, he wasn't able to use it to its full potential. Also, both Goku and Gohan are battle-damaged. So if they fought each other, Goku must have put up a good fight.

2. It makes it kind of awkward because if Goku (Kakarot) is self-aware at that time, he should be going by "Kakarot." So that means when he lost his memory, Gohan thought: "You know what? I'm going to rename him and call him my grandson." If Toriyama even remembers that Goku is supposed to hit his head and lose his memory, around that time. Goku should have memories of Raditz and Bardock, too.

3. Goku being self-aware makes more sense. How did the Saiyans expect a baby to fend for itself? It's cool to know that Toriyama didn't want/like how we all thought and saw (non-canon) how Gohan and Goku met, when Goku was a baby. I wonder what happens to Goku's armor. This throws the "Bardock: The Father of Goku" special and those filler pictures from the anime, when Master Roshi tells Goku about when Gohan found him and when he hit his head, out the window. Master Roshi said Gohan found Goku as a baby, Goku should be around 2 in that picture of him eating Gohan's food. Does 2 years of age still count as a baby? I wonder if that picture is on the first day they met.

4. If Goku is 2 in that picture, that throws the timeline out the window. Doesn't it? Planet Vegeta blew up a little bit after Goku was born. Unless, for some reason Goku wasn't on the planet at the time, but he wasn't being sent to Earth. Just like how Raditz wasn't on Planet Vegeta, either. And Goku was actually staying with "Freeza's forces" for 2 years. Maybe they sent him to Earth to "get him out of their hair" because he was annoying? Wait, that still messes up the timeline.

Well, I had a strong feeling that this "tie-in" would create more contradictions/plot-holes/inconsistencies. That's all that seems to happen when they add to the story, nowadays.

This week's English Jump is out!

What an adorable little finale. It had a little more exposition than I expected (I'm not used to that when it comes to Toriyama), but it was charming all the same. Who'd have thought that we'd get a backstory for the Capsule Corporation products, of all things? I noticed they changed Toriyama's comment about the upcoming tankobon to a (shameless, by their own admission) plug for Dragon Ball. I'm not really okay with them changing the author's final words to "Go buy my other series!" But them's the breaks. Nice consistency translating/spelling Goku's dialogue as "Whotta" to match up with the Viz translation of DB.

So after all that, Jaco never even met Goku. Cute.

To think I was staying away from this thread because of spoilers, but all the spoilers are hidden anyway. Well I really enjoyed this manga, it was a fun ride. A nice little add-on to the ever expanding DB universe.
