Do you think Nozawa Goku voice is too feminine?

Post by Linnom » Mon Sep 30, 2013 7:02 pm

Don't get me wrong, i'm a big fan of Nozawa, her Goku is incredible in every aspect, but some fans don't understand her work and bash her without consideration, even here in Brazil.
One day i was discussing about the original version of Dragon Ball with my brother, for him, all the original cast is superior to the brazilian dub except for Goku, for him, Nozawa is extremely talented, but her voice is too feminine for Goku.
For me, although is very obvius that's a woman, i don't think his voice is feminine, only a high pitched man voice.
What's you think about? Goku original voice is feminine? Discuss.

The problem is not that it is feminine, it's that it is grating and squawky.

It depends on what you mean by "feminine."

Here we must differentiate between a character's attitude and a character's voice. Is her voice "feminine" in terms of attitude? No, not at all. Nozawa's Goku has always sounded like a giant man-child in terms of attitude and the overall delivery of her lines. "Feminine" in terms of sounding like a woman's voice? Yes. Never in a million years would I think that her voice for adult Goku sounded like a man, and I've never heard of one person being shocked to find out that Goku's adult voice was a woman. For some, that's breaking the fourth wall too much.

I used to hate that, but I've grown to accept and even like it, because it totally works for Goku. It enhances his quirkiness, which adds to his character. However, in terms of sounding natural, I've always felt that an adult male voice suited adult Goku more.

It's a fairly even trade-off, though. Either we get enhanced quirkiness with the Japanese voice (which works), or a more natural sound with the adult male voices (which also works). The "problem" of not accepting Nozawa's voice is not one unique to English-speaking audiences, though. It's worth noting that literally every international dub had an adult male voice adult Goku.

You know, Goku is such a simpleton, I've never really felt the need to apply such monikers as "feminine" or "masculine." I mean, yeah, he's male and has muscles and is prone to showing his peen; his sex isn't in question, but he leans so asexual and shows zero interest in having sex. I think Nozawa's voice compliments that aspect of the character, and probably wouldn't seem out of place coming out of a girl's mouth.

Any and all traits applied to being "masculine" or "macho" don't fit with Goku, so the opposite choice of him being effeminate doesn't really register either.

Well, he did. At least twice, if the series is any indication.

I disagree when it comes to the original series through GT, but unfortunately, I kinda agree when it comes to Kai. She was so raspy and strained during the Kaioken scene during Goku's fight with Vegeta in Kai.

I used to think the same thing, but after watching the entire series in japanese, her voice grew so much in me, she is the perfect voice actress for Goku!

This. The main problem is the whole "dying cat" thing rather than the feminine part for me.

I don't find it grating at all, I adore it.

Having said that, it's clear it is a female doing the voice. I sent my friend a clip saying 'Ah, I love that this nice little Japanese lady voices Goku' and he replied saying 'Oh wow, I didn't expect for it to actually sound so feminine'. I think it's that initial shock factor that puts people off - this is especially true if you've grown up on the very masculine and heroic voices that Goku seems to get in every dub.

Nozawa is certainly the only real Goku for me, she embodies Goku's childish nature perfectly and yet manages to sound terrifying when necessary. The original Super Saiyan transformation is just fantastic and those screams are just...I have no words, they're perfect.

So yes, it's feminine at times. Is it too feminine? Absolutely not.

It's not macho, but neither is Goku. Goku's actions are macho but I would never consider him as being a manly man like Vegeta. Her voice is pretty dang perfect if you ask me, although some scenes I do prefer Schemmel's screams like going SS3.

Um, okay...? :| I don't like the voice; it annoys me. I don't see how that would indicate that I have a "low tolerance."

It's a kids voice, are you annoyed by Japanese children?
