Why did nobody else learn Shunkan Ido?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Why did nobody else learn Shunkan Ido?

Post by dbzfan7 » Mon Sep 30, 2013 1:29 am

Seriously this is an amazing technique that could not only help in battle, but in your every day life. Maybe Kibitoshin could everyone how to do the improved version that doesn't need a ki signature. I also want to add why tons of characters never took the time to learn how to fly. I can see some people who don't have much skill in ki or martial arts, but Chi Chi and Muten Roshi could have learned to fly. Why would you not want to learn these skills.

Ishizu: "Because shut up."
Vegeta: "Funny... I seem to recall Kakarot being fed the same information right before he transformed; the distinct look on your faces when he went Super Saiyan didn't exactly inspire confidence. One does not predict or calculate power like ours."

I think it must be a very difficult technique to learn. Goku took over a year to learn it and he's a genius.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

I never noticed how Muten Roshi never learned to fly in 300 years of life

The others could learn it in a shorter amount of time. They do it all the time. I also think it's worth investing in as the technique is really helpful.

Maybe Goku couldn't teach it?

Why not? Did the council of Yardrat say teaching the technique is forbidden?

Cell learned it just by watching it, so the others could too, even if they took a long time to do so. They might not be able to do it on their own like Cell did, but a little help from Goku they would be able to.

I thought that Cell learned it by accidentally absorbing some of Goku's cells after exploding?

Regardless, Buu learned an even more advanced version of the technique by watching it, so your point still stands.

Cell never stated that. Cell said he was able to study Goku's Instantaneous Movement and learned it.

From Herms' Strength Checker:

Chapter: 413 (DBZ 219), P10.1, P11.3-4, P12.1
Context: after regenerating from his self-destruction
Cell: “There’s a small clump inside my head…This makes up my nucleus…As long as that clump isn’t destroyed, my body can continue regenerating…When I self-destructed, my nucleus fortunately remained uninjured…Quite frankly, I hadn’t calculated on being able to regenerate…I was lucky…And even more happily, my body regenerated as my perfect form, even without No.18…And it wasn’t merely my perfect form: I had vastly powered up like Son Gohan…This was probably done by the Saiyan cells, which greatly increase in power when they are saved from the brink of death…And I even managed to learn Son Goku’s Teleportation…So in short, I was able to return here, having become even more perfect. It seems that rather than defeat me, Son Goku has given me several presents.”

Thanks.

To be fair though, that doesn't say that he studied it. I personally always took it to mean that when he regenerated from his explosion, he had obtained the ability upon reforming, possibly by assimilating some of Goku's cells in the process.

Maybe because Goku isn't the best teacher, or because only Goku have the ki control to use this technic.

That's what I thought he meant too.

Because Goku did not want to hang out with Gohan in the after life, a year of being confined with him in the Room of Spirit and Time was way more than enough for Son-kun
"You might think you know everything there is to know about me, but really, you're not even CLOSE."

"Never give in--never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy." ~ Sir Winston Chruchill / Dragon Ball Z in a nutshell

They had 3 years to learn it. Goku could have easily taught it to Gohan in the ROSAT or Piccolo during the 3 year wait,

My in-universe theory is that shunkan ido is actually pretty hazardous to learn, and that if you mess up, you really mess up.

Things like:

-not being able to shut it off and thereby trapping yourself in a world where everything else seems to be frozen, but then upon further inspection is moving unbearably slowly and what's actually happened is you're moving so fast that you're now kind of on a different plane of time from everyone else and a lonely Twilight-Zone-esque future awaits you if you don't succumb to the madness of it all first.

-the gory possibility of everything not properly coming with you. If anyone recalls that one semi-rare recaps special where Goku teleports out of his clothes and into the tub; like that, only instead of your clothes and instead of intentionally having it left behind, think the unintentional loss of organs, or limbs.

My head-canon has it that Goku doesn't teach the technique to anyone because he briefly experienced that first one, and while he did figure a way out eventually, did not figure it out before a short-but-long-enough taste of fear set in. Kind of like how he couldn't last long in the Room of Spirit and Time as a little kid.
On hiatus.
