Fair enough, and I agree that's likely to be the reason for said reaction.

I agree that a male voice actor would require less of a suspension of disbelief, but I'd hate to see anyone use that as a reason to enjoy something Dragon Ball related, of all things.

It's not so much feminine as the Japanese equivalent of Linda Young's Freeza.

But the argument presented in this very thread is that Nozawa's voice shouldn't physically come out of a grown man. The problem with Linda Young was being miscast. She exudes absolutely nothing about Freeza's personality as presented in the comic or the original TV series.

Yes, I do. It may have worked for young Goku, but I don't think it fits the character as an adult.
But, she does two different voices, a child Goku and an adult Goku.
I know. My point was that while her voice acting worked for young Goku, her adult representation of him didn't (in my opinion).

I'd have to disagree.

Goku isn't a character whose base personality and traits have changed much over the years. He's a goofy, battle obsessed hick and will always be that way.

Nozawa's voice for him significantly deepened over the transition from kid to adult. She deepens the voice even more so for the Saiyan transformations to reflect the powerful nature of those forms.

I just can't fathom how anyone can say it doesn't fit especially if they have no problems with the Kid Goku voice.

It's not like he grew up and suddenly became Super Machoman. The voice reflects a natural transition from kid to adult for Goku.

I think Nozawa's voice fits well.

We know that Goku is childish and blah blah... But it's Japan. What do you expect from Japan?
Especially when it's a series about aliens beating the crap out of each other and magical marbles that summon a giant lizard, so why not give a buff man a woman's voice?

Except Linda Young didn't portray Freeza correctly at all. Nozawa portrays Goku perfectly.

I think part of the reason I never minded Nozawa was the fact that I started watching the first series in Japanese first. With that in mind, her voice as an older Goku seemed a natural progression rather than something jarring.

That said, it bothers me that she voices everyone in the Son family. Nozawa is good at differentiating the voices, but at points it becomes noticeable and - frankly - annoying. I would think older Gohan at least would have gotten a different VA.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Yes, I do agree with that. I just can't stand Nozawa as Bardock. Goku's voice makes sense because he's still a child-like hick. Bardock is a warrior killing machine.

I would say that her voice is unusally high-pitched for a man, but still sounds masculine enough...until she starts screaming. THEN it gets really distracting  ...

To be completely honest, I think the biggest problem people have with her voice ARE the screams. Otherwise, it comes off as quirky but sort of cute and endearing, though I can still see peoples preferences in the states and world over, besides Japan, leaning towards a more strictly male voice. Those screams come off as fierce, powerful... but high pitched and, let's be quite honest, can easily be considered grating by those who don't frankly find the appeal of that interpretation of Son Goku.

Even I wince from time to time when she starts wailing, but I still enjoy it because that's just who Goku is to me.

I don't really have any problems with her voice. In fact I really like it now. When I hear it I don't think anything other than "Hey that's Goku!" I'm not ashamed to admit though that, since my first exposure to the anime was through Toonami, I really did find Nozawa's voice to be pretty jarring when I first made the jump to the Japanese version. I never would have believed you if you told me back then that I would grow to love the voice so much!

Like many others, Nozawa's Goku surprised me when I first heard it. For me, it sounded more like a boy than being too feminine. It grew on me over the years.

While I don't mind Nozawa voicing Gohan and Goten, hearing Bardock's voice had caught me by surprise. I was expecting something like Raditz's voice.

She's not feminine as Goku or anyone else, she's just obviously a woman when compared to every other dub voice.

Not at all. I just hear the character, that's how good Nozawa is. And her voice does deepen when Goku gets older- watch let's say the first episode of the series and then the first episode of the 23rd Budokai.
It is in his character to be rude and a bit crass. He's a hick, with no formal education. That is Son Goku. That is who he is.

Superman in an orange Gi was the bastard son of FUNimation. Its not The real character, it is as false as Chatku.

I wouldn't say Goku's voice is feminine, it's just higher pitched. I never get why people say he "sounds like a girl" because I've never heard a girl with a voice like that.

Same here. When I was a kid, I thought it was someone doing a cheesy Bruce Lee impression (I thought Bruce Lee talked in his fighting voice when I was a kid :P ).

I don't care, because she is Son Goku :)) But I understand it must be hard to get used to it.

Never had an issue about it unlike most others, I feel like it suits Goku's nature in childish and pure.

I discovered it as a kid and thought, "Wow, Goku sounds way different than in English and the music sounds better here". I watched Battle of Gods with my cousin over this weekend and that was his first experience with the Japanese version. He liked it and had no problem with Nozawa's Goku. He thought it sounded a little funny (meaning he wasn't expecting that kind of voice to come out of Adult Goku), but that's about it, he also enjoyed the movie a lot since it went back to the DB style humor and he likes the original Dragon Ball more than Z.
