Hate towards the females of DB?

Post by Jerseymilk » Mon Mar 15, 2004 11:00 pm

I'd been thinking of running this subject by everyone here for a little while, and finally decided to. I found that I've encountered in the world of DB fandom, especially on the internet, a lot of animosity towards the females in DB, especially Videl, Chi-Chi, and Pan somewhat. I don't see as much of it with #18 except for comments about her being cold, which I don't agree with. As for Buruma, it's usually the typical she's a b**** or a tramp type comments. For one of the best examples of this, you can check out this website: http://wwwgeocities.com/mre-mre/anime/the_women.html also read the first page of the guestbook section for a really immature rant on Buruma. :? Plus many of the rest of the entries there are also disturbing. Anyway, I was just wondering from everybody here, how much have you encountered this, if you have at all? Also what are your thoughts, feelings, opinions about it? For me, besides finding it pathetic and one of the main reasons why I hate a lot of anime fandom, it really disturbs me that the venom seems to be against women such as Videl that are really strong and I think, great female role models. You have to wonder really. :|

Doesn't work for me... I think they don't want to be overrun by chauvanists (spelling?) or something... (Keth: And raccoons! Damn you Tom Nook!)

But yes, I have noticed that they don't always receive the recognition that they deserve... Bulma for her genius, Chichi for her... preparedness? I guess so.

No I'm not taking about guys running them down. (guess I should have clarified that) These are other girls I'm mostly talking about. Which is why I find it disturbing and sad.

Very disturbing. Very sad. Now I'm just confused about it all.

(Yeah... at this point Keth is just spouting nonsense...)

Well, Dragon Ball is aimed at boys and written by a man, so it's not exactly unfeasible that the females in the series wouldn't be portrayed in the greatest light. I wouldn't really claim it's total sexism, though. But I don't think any of them were portrayed so badly that they deserve to be hated upon.

Buruma was a bit bratty and flirtatious at first, but she outgrew that. I wouldn't say that she's mean, because look at what she has to put up with! Wouldn't you go nuts if you had to deal with so many dumb muscleheads and perverts? She's still a decent person overall, but I don't think she gets enough chance to show it.

Chichi's not that bad either. As a kid she's really touchy and quick to attack people, and then as an adult, she's the typical overprotective mother, and still a bit touchy. But most people really exaggerate her touchiness, like Some Random Guy. :D

All of the girls, save maybe Good Lunch, are pretty "pushy", but you could easily say they're confident and independent just the same. There's no reason to badmouth any of them like that, though I've also seen plenty of it.

Chi Chi in the anime might be looked at singled out by many. My friend from Japan summed her up for both the dub and the original as being the stereotypical Japanese wife and mother.

Well, if you're talking about other girls bashing Chi-Chi, etc. here, isn't it possible that these are fanfiction.netters? I know of *some* girls who are so rabid over their DBZ guy of choice, they feel the need to prove that their spouse is unworthy... "Vegita is so cool! Bulma doesn't deserve him! She's a tramp! Die!!!!11!!" ...Is pretty typical fangirl behevior. Ever hear of the T/P/M wars? o.o

Yes I have and I think it's all a load of crap! Trust me, Trunks did not end up with Pan or Marron, so all you crazy, annoying fangirls, * starts putting on brass knuckles and hunting trenchcoat a la "Witch Hunter Robin"* time to face reality and get over it for God's sake!

It's not surprising. Seriously, I had never even heard the rumours, but after one look at Trunks in that outfit, the words "super-gay" came screaming to mind.

Hey there you go! Another thing about GT that's bad! Making Trunks look like he was gay! :x I should've added that too to my GT rant in the DBZ movie thread! :D
