Usually, when there's a contradiction, you'd take the newest version of events as canon. The author has changed their mind about something in the story. However, this is Toriyama, so he probably just forgot.

Technically, since he re-read the manga, he'd have seen his own drawings of baby Goku as "flashbacks" in the speech bubbles when Raditz arrives on Earth and when Kame'sennin told them about Goku hitting his head.

Still not saying this actually means Goku should have arrived as a naked baby, as Raditz could have been imagining the last time he had seen Goku before being sent off on his own mission and Roshi could have just been imagining the scenario with Goku that young since he never actually met the boy back then. BUT, Toiryama should have seen these when flipping through in preparation for Battle of Gods and I guess Jaco.

My personal "canon" and BP list. (Coming Soon)

Tights and Bulma look so different. The eyes, the hair strands, etc. I wonder how Tights would look like if she were drawn in the Dragon Ball (Z) artstyle.

I really enjoyed this series. It was fun, somewhat silly, and I like how it ties into Dragon Ball. I'll need to get the volume when it comes out for more casual reading.

As a part of the giant re-launch of our "Official Manga Spin-Offs" section, we've included a huuuuuuuuuuuge addition for "Jaco the Galactic Patrolman".

This includes individual pages for each chapter (with a synopsis, detailed notes listing references, page comparisons, etc.), as well as exclusives from the digital Japanese release like the Tights poster image and translations of both of Akira Toriyama's comments from "The Inside Story on Jaco the Galactic Patrolman" (1 / 2).

If you're all caught-up on the series and want to revisit its world... well... I guess we have you covered!

I'm just wondering...why did you guys translate his comments yourself? Is it that you don't like Jump's translation or you just wanted it to be "yours"? Just curious.

A little bit of all of the above. The issue came out in Japan a little earlier than it did over here, so by later in the day Julian already had the Japanese text and English translation before theirs hit the web. And yeah, wanted the work to be our own.

I guess this explains how Bulma knew about time travel and was successful in her attempts at creating a time machine. Tights must have told her the story of what happened with the shuttle or shown her Omori's machines.

From Kanzenshuu's excellent new Jaco page(s):
Omori’s comment about Tights’s novel based on Jaco not meeting with much acclaim seems to be a wry reflection on how Toriyama himself expects Jaco the Galactic Patrolman to be received, judging by his previous comments on the matter.
I thought this was an interesting observation. Unfortunately it may also reflect how the series is actually being received. I've seen some negative comments about the series elsewhere online, and if its placement in Japanese WSJ is any indication, it was not doing particularly well in the polls either.

That's kind of sad in a way. I mean, it's great that Toriyama was allowed to tell the story he wanted to tell it seems, and I'd say that's what's most important - but it's also kind of sad that his swan song may be the thing remembered the least fondly out of all of his creations.

This perfecty tied with Dragon Ball universe. Another one from the 7 universes. The pacing of these two last chapters were really good. Its a shame thats this isnt being well received but that doenst mean a manga is bad.

Lately since i watched Battle of Gods i have been thinking if toriyama-sama wont tie some other works with dragon ball universe to complete the 7 universes, i would like that
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

The problem is that nothing is happening in this manga. All those chapters are just to introduce Jaco saving Tights from a crashing rocket, that's all. And it lasts only a few pages.

Summary: "Jaco lands on Earth to stop an evil alien. He meets an old man and a girl that he later saves from a crashing rocket. The girl's younger sister repairs Jaco's ship and Jaco returns to space, forgetting the evil alien he was following." And it ties with Dragon Ball because the evil alien is Goku and Tights's younger sister is Bulma!

Advertising the General Blue Saga of Dragon Ball as tying in with Dr. Slump would have even been more accurate than this: Goku goes to Penguin Village and all the main Dr. Slump characters make an appearance. Arale helps Goku in finding Senbei, and Senbei tries to repair Goku's Dragon Radar. General Blue finds Senbei and tries to steal his plane, but is stopped by Arale. This part could have been an actual Dr. Slump chapter, while Jaco is clearly not Dragon Ball chapter 0.

It's not Dragon Ball chapter 0. Toriyama never said it would be.

You had absolutely no reason to believe that it would be.

Chapter 01 came with an author comment saying that we'd have to read to the very end to really understand what was going on. Chapter 01 also came with an author introduction/disclaimer saying that you should not be expecting anything overly flashy or special. Everything Toriyama said from the get-go implied that we'd be getting DB cameo appearances at best. From the very beginning, he was trying to keep everyone's expectations under control. Yes, Shueisha used hyperbole to promote it, but that's something that happens all the time in modern media and it was an incredibly easy tactic to see through.

I was expecting to see baby Goku in the final panel and that was it. What Toriyama gave us was way more than a lot of us had expected.

To me Jaco is about watching fun characters interacting with each other and enjoying an appealing environment more than lots of interesting plot points.

As the author himself puts it:
Unfortunately, this series won’t have much flashy action like Dragon Ball did. But that doesn’t mean it will have a beautifully deep plot either. Light, goofy and happy! That’s what my manga is all about.
A cool, relaxing read 8)

I don't really think you're allowed to post those scans here, but that Toyotarō drawing of all the DB/Toriyama doctors made me smile.

Don't worry, the awesome Kanzenshuu guys are already aware and apparently working on a translation of this v-jump content https://twitter.com/saiyajedi/status/391561626668630016 :D

That adult Goku drawn in Toriyama's new style is hilarious. Can you imagine if DB had actually been drawn like that?

Thank god that Toriyama won't draw any DB manga. I really liked his style during the Kanzenban era 10 years ago (it's probably my favorite style as well), but now... :?
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.
