So, I went ahead and re-watched it for the first time in...2 years, maybe? For some reason, I went in thinking there was a chance I wasn't gonna enjoy it this time. It was pretty decent.
"Discount Zangya's gang" was fun. The demonic king thingy was a thing. Goku Jr going Super Saiyan over the bears was kinda meh (,would've made more sense to use Puck's near death there and have the same ending). Made worse with him not remembering it (!) even though he was totally chill. They tried pulling a "Gohan" for the second time, but it fell flat there. The meeting with "Ghost God Goku" is always great.

It was probably the 4th/5th time I watched it...and I never noticed it before, but...the hell's up with his "family"? Goku Jr was named and raised by his great-grandma...and that's it? No shot of some photos with the couple that gave birth to him, even without showing their faces? Did Trunks and Pan somehow give birth to their own great-grandchild or something? LOL

Of course! They needed to do something to make up for the fact that it looks like crap, right?
Seriously, though. I've probably already read about it from you but I can't remember what the answer was. Why is it that every release of this special has such terrible ghosting?

It was a good film, Goku Jr had a nice character arc. He reminds me of Gohan, except with no sudden random-Cell Games flip.

When Son Goku Jr. meets Son Goku, it always brings a tear to my eye. Don't know why. It feels extremely nostalgic considering it is basically the very end of the entire story at that point.

They seem to have access only to the D-2 videotape master that was used for the original broadcast, and Toei's telecine conversion sucked at the time. Perhaps they lost the original film.

That suuuuucks. Although, it explains why it never got a re-release in Japan. (Well, I guess they could've added it to the final GT single) Is they're nothing that Toei can do, or would it take too much effort for a special of the black sheep series?

"Sudden flip" as in going berserk and transforming because of something that's not really a big deal? Yeah, it's there. They drive home the similarity with Gohan when he dodges the wolf by flying to the top of a tree and not knowing what happened to him. How they tried to do that with the transformation kinda fell flat, for me, though.

Yeah, that was certainly the biggest shock with my GT Dragon Box.
Beautiful quality for the entire series and then suddenly I'm looking at absolute trash.

Such a shame.
