Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.
I gotta say. This was a surprisingly light hearted movie, but honestly, the comedy was the best part! I haven't laughed so hard in a long, long time, especially of Vegeta singing, all the Pilaf things and Great Saiyaman. The fights were also all great. I really hope I can see this movie again in cinema or dubbed in french
Only movie beating this in my book is movie 12.

Do you notice that, before their final battle, Bills tells Goku he won't destroy Earth if Goku is stronger than him. This might be why he didn't destroy Earth in the end.
Hah, I managed to not spoil myself any further than knowing about the super saiyajin god
I just saw a dream where i went to watch BoG with my class in an actual movie theater. I nearly cried when i realized it was a dream and woke up.
I've seen the movie already, but i want to see how people i know would react to it.
Bullza wrote:Hey guys I have some news on BoG's Box Office.
The movie was #2 for the weekend in Mexico making $2.8 million. It beat Elysium which opened the same week despite opening in 50 fewer theatres. Based on it's gross vs theatre count it ranks as the 7th most impressive opening this year.
In Ecuador the movie has been #1 two weeks running and has made $718,000.
I'm not sure what it's made in Argentina but it was #1 there selling 205,000 tickets opening weekend. That could be worth a million or two.
So far all confirmed numbers point to BoG at making $34.4 million but that's a bare minimum as it does include Argentina and a few of the markets only had figured published for 1 week, 2 at best.

NeoKING wrote:In the scene where Goku is discussing his respect for Vegeta during his fight with Bills, someone asks what they're talking about and Piccolo [supposedly] says, "It seems that Goku is receiving training." What did that mean?
I don't know how the exact Japanese sentence could be translated, but I took it as the fact that Piccolo noticed Goku was not at full power, right before Goku confirms it to Birus.
Basically an alternative way to say "it actually looks like Goku is just training with his new form / warming up right now, not fighting seriously at full power yet", with the actual sentence being something like "Looks like Goku is (only) training".
But I don't know if that explanation can properly fit the actual Japanese sentence used. It's how I naturally understood it so far.

Uh, yeah. About that. I just contacted Event Cinemas to clarify that the listing isn't a mistake. Haven't received a response yet, but the NZ website still hasn't been updated with the poster and plot summary like the AUS one has. The only change that's been made since the site went up is the run-time, which was originally listed as 92 minutes, but was reduced to the proper 86.
We'll just have to wait and see... *crosses fingers*

I rather liked BoG, though I'm still waiting for something more... I don't know, tense? While Beers was powerful, and constantly threatening to blow up the Earth, I never really felt like he was any kind of threat. Without that tension, without him feeling like a threat, he kind of fell flat as a villain. Other than that, and Super Saiyan God's rather... uninspired design, I liked it. Absoltuely LOVED the Pilaf bits. The Trunks/Pan shippers are probably up in arms, but Trunks/Mai has just become my new favorite couple XD
Also, love the fact we've finally got confirmation that the base Saiyans are weaker than 100% Freeza~

Yeah, but that's okay because Birus was only a big cat. He wasn't a mean villian.

Guys, this thread is long so I don't know if this has been discussed. But, has anyone noticed the (apparent) plot hole of having Gohan actually turn SSJ during the "SSJ God transformation" scene? From what I gather, there are only 2-3 reasons for this happening.
a) This was an accident: Toriyama or the animators simply forgot.
or
b) This was deliberate: Gohan is able to turn SSJ, but it's a weaker state than his "Mystic" power-up. Him turning SSJ in this scene was just a symbolic gesture.

What do you think?
Gohan never had an aura in his Ultimate state (which oddly enough he does in BOG when even movie 13 got this right). Gohan was also shown as an SSJ constantly in trailers. Seems to me that he was meant to be an SSJ and they just changed it last minute.
I believe Ultimate Gohan was shoehorned in originally when he trys to go SSJ he just got green eyes and his hair stayed black.

Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

Doctor. wrote:I've explained before, I'll just paraphrase myself.
Power levels establish tension and drama. People who care about them (well, people who care about them in a narrative) don't care about the big numbers or the fancy explosions. If you have character A who's so much above character B, who's the main character, you're gonna be left wondering how in the hell character B, the character we're supposed to care and root for, is going to escape the situation or overcome the odds. It makes us emotionally invested.
If character B doesn't escape the situation in a believable way that's consistent with previous events, then that emotional investment is gone. It was pointless tension, pointless drama made just to suck in the viewer. It has no critical value whatsoever. The audience is left believing that the author can just create whatever scenarios he wants and what happens to the characters is decided by whatever the author wants to happen, regardless of the events that happened in the story. Which, in fairness, is what happens, but the audience wants to be fooled. The audience wants to know that the world they're following has rules. That the world they're invested in isn't going to bend to external factors that are irrelevant to them.
An author can do whatever he wants with the characters, that's not false. But the author should also have the responsibility to make sure it fits in cohesively with the other events in the narrative he has created.
Both points you've noted can be true, or it can also be that the whole ritual surrounding "Super Saiyan God" is so distinct and different that it supersedes other states-of-being for characters and knocks them into Super Saiyan if applicable. In that case, it still doesn't affect/contradict anything.

This been brought up many times. It's not a plot hole and a plot hole. If you belive Gohan can't go SSJ no more then it's a plot hole but if you think he can go SSJ but if you think he can then it's not. Also it could be the spirit energy of everyone else making Gohan turn SSJ

There is also this. They didn't remove his aura cause they did not have time or rushed it.
IIRC, the only time(s) he goes SSJ in BoG is for the Super Saiyan God 'creation' process, in which case I just chalk it up to the 'magic' of creating a Super Saiyan God. Otherwise, probably an animation oversight, since all of the other Saiyans in that scene were transformed.
