I watched it yesterday for the 1st time, it was enjoyable at least. The animation and background art all looks fresh and pretty, the attacks and fighting all looks 2013 and fast paced. I like how a lot of characters appear, and the BGM is nicely composed. It's about as good as we're gonna get i suppose, and it did feel a bit nostalgic, and I say a bit and only that because a lot has changed and will never be how it was and we have to accept it. And I get a weird feeling when watching this that wants me to leave DB in the past, it's always there when I want it, but to take any new material lightly and not get my hopes up.

For one, characters like Muten Roshi, Kaio-sama are voiced by different VA's since the originals passed away, and I can't help but think Roshi only had a few lines to make us aware he was there, but didn't sound like the old Roshi, I don't know what happened to the cool voice Trunks used to have, but he sound really high pitched, Kuririn doesn't really say much at all, and maybe my ears need cleaning but even Goku and Gohan sound slightly different, Goku sounds more exaggerated, Gohan sounded a bit hight and mighty, unless it was the 'sake'. Shenron acts way out of character, which is funny to be fair, but really un-DB-like.

I could go on nit picking, but the truth is, time has passed and continues to pass, and with time, DBZ will seem more like a thing of the past, the new movies are nice, but we will never get the same feeling we had when Goku first went SSJ, or Gohan going SSJ2 and beating Cell, and all the great moments witnessed throughout the DB/Z series, we can only take ourselves back to those moments by watching them again and their original form, any new material will only ever be fan service, and anyone who can't come to terms with this will never enjoy or accept anything new Toei release.

I do like Pilaf and co making their appearances, takes us right back to the very start, even though Mai's appearance has changed a a lot, her eyes were blue and now she looks more like Pan or someone, but anyway, meh, the film was still nice, even though I think the 20th anniversary special was more nostalgic and more spot on, it actually felt like a DBZ special, this movie feels more off and like something completely different, different music, characters are more out of line and act weirder too.

Kaio-sama is still played by the original Seiyu, the same actor who plays the narrator, in fact!

Really? Wow, and here I was thinking I heard the guy who voiced Kaio(and who was also the narrator) passed away, that's what made me assume that the voice was done by someone else while I was watching the movie, I did think it was weird how the voice sounded very similar, I just thought they found the right guy with a matching voice.

When you say Trunks's 'cool' voice, are you sure you're not remembering just Kusao's take on the older versions of the character? Because his voice for kid Trunks has always been pretty high pitched. I didn't really notice any difference in how he did it in this new movie.

I agree with you on Roshi though. It's kind of sad that nobody has quite been able to capture the role in the same way that the original actor did. :( It could be worse though. So long as we're never again subjected to the guy who played him in Path to Power...

Satou Masaharu is probably the closest we've come to matching Miya'uchi Kouhei and I reckon that is mostly because the two worked together a lot and were probably friends. Masu'oka Hiroshi just...couldn't turn to stupid old man off. He wasn't subtle and that really hurt his performances, especially in the games.

I still haven't seen the Tenth Anniversary film so I don't even know what Aikawa Kinya sounds like! :P

Nope. I meant chibbi Trunks actually sounded better before, his voice has definitely been changed and sounds less cool and more helium-like, maybe it's just my ears, but, no, I'm sure of it, Trunks' voice was much more older sounding back during the Great Saiya Man arc, in the movie he sounds bad.

Cut them a break. This is more or less the first time they returned to these characters in 15 or so years. a lot of the cast are getting on in age and cant put as much energy and emphasis on there characters. Its like trying to make a 80 year old talk like a 20 year old. It can get taxing for them. Considering the circumstances and for what its worth, I thought they did a great job with the Japanese dub.

I heard no discernible difference in Kusao's Trunks performance in the movie versus the old days. Furthermore, they're generally still doing these voice performances every year via video games, and we also know they're actively working on Kai, and that version of Trunks is a big focus for what they've clearly been working on for the last year or so.

Regarding Toriyama's message, I kind of can't believe he brought up Goku's parental hang-ups; something I would've bet money on was an interpretation of the character that only, if not largely, existed among Western fans. But then he follows it up with "don't think about anything" and I knew this was still Toriyama talking.

The idea that his thorough involvement in the film was coincidental is hilarious, as well.

Wow, color me surprised! I would have thought you'd have seen the 10th anniversary film tons of times by now, even if only to dissect the animation. :)

Thanks, Kanzenshuu staff, for those new "Home Video Guide" pages! It's nice to finally have in-depth coverage on what exactly's on the bonus disc. I keep telling myself not to import that damn limited edition blu-ray, but I know that at this rate, I'll cave. ^_^;

I have yet to see it or the eleventh Dragon Ball Z movie, surprisingly. I passed up the chance of buying the movie #2-4 box that FUNimation put out a few years ago recently. The local Half-Price Books had it for ten bucks but I thought "Well, what happens if the Dragon Boxes are announced?" Thus, here we are. Woe is me.

Ah, I totally understand. It's the same reason why I still haven't seen the original Dragon Ball TV series. I keep holding out for Dragon Boxes so I passed on FUNi's season sets. I will say, though, you're not missing anything by not having heard Kinya Aikawa's performance in that film.

I'm also amused that he mentions Gokû's faults, "hopeless case of a human being" indeed. X3 But then he balances it with the character's positive attributes, so it's well rounded; I like it. :3

He actually brought up Goku's skills as a parent back in 2004, as well (in the guidebook Tenka'ichi Densetsu):
ーー悟空が父親らしいことをしないぶん、ピッコロが悟飯の父親代わりでしたよね。
鳥山 悟空は子育てに興味がないんですよ、多分。父親としては完全に失格(笑)。働いてもいないですからね。悟空はただ強くなりたいだけで、他の本能はない感じなんですよ。だから興味のないことには本当に何の興味も示さない。きっと結婚も興味なかったんだと思います。

——As much as Goku didn't do many fatherly things, Piccolo was Gohan's surrogate father.
Toriyama: Goku isn't interested in child-rearing, probably. He's completely unqualified to be a father. (laughs) He doesn't even have a job. Goku wants nothing other than to get stronger, and it feels like he doesn't have any other instincts. So he shows absolutely no interest in things he's not interested in. I'd bet he wouldn't have had any interest in marriage, either.

Am I the only one who thinks this movie should have a half-american rock soundtrack like the some of the others?

Now before anyone jumps on me and says no, think about it. It worked on the other DBZ movies and look how epic it got to the western fans. And for the record, I only think they should only use the american rock songs for the fights and that's it, nothin' else.

If they're going to replace the voices, they might as well replace the music. If they're going to replace the music, they might as well replace the sound effects. If they're going to replace the audio they might as well replace the visuals, too.

Wait...

Saying it "worked" isn't really a valid point because that's entirely subjective. A lot of western fans didn't like it; this forum alone is full of them.

If American rock music is what you want to see in a movie, it's probably best to just look for one that already has it instead of changing another film to cater to those tastes.

Eh, this movie is too different in tone from the other movies for it to fit. I agree that it worked for those movies, especially Movie 8, but not a more light-hearted one like this.

I'm well aware that we're a minority, and I never meant to imply that the rock song score didn't have its fans. I just don't think saying "it worked before" is a legitimate justification for replacing the music, because whether or not it actually "worked" is (from what I've seen both here and elsewhere) something that fans are often split on. Something like that can't be used as a reason.

I personally think Sumitomo's music has a good shot of appealing to those same internet fans who loved the rock songs anyway. It's got the choir, it's "epic," etc. I may not like his score, but I will admit it has a lot of what those aforementioned western fans probably associate with DBZ. It wouldn't need to be replaced because I think a lot of it is already what those people go ga-ga for.

Hence why I said "only for the fights".
