Well it does have its place in advertisement and sales. Every company wants their product to be able to catch your eye and therefore attention. If someone was just walking down a the anime section and best buy and just saw "DBZ Season 1" on the front cover, it may not catch their attention when compared to other box arts. When they do something like this, showing the characters, background, and action on the cover, it makes for a more overall eye catching product.

How so? If anything it really makes the product stand out. I wanna say that's Yamamuro's work. (Sorry if I spelled that wrong.)
Nah, it's Funi's in-house artwork. For some reason they like to make Goku's emblem thingy gold instead of white. The style is similar to the Kai set artwork and the Rock The Dragon set.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Interesting. Did they do the box art for the Level sets and Kai season sets too?

Yeah, that's what I meant by Kai sets. The level sets used old artwork that's been around for a while. I think Level 1.1's artwork is original, but 1.2 is a picture that Funi's been using since 1997.

Hmm, never knew that. Well props to them, I thought the artwork was done by Toei.

What's the best way to describe my feelings on Funi and this release?

"Ugh." (why break precedent, after all)

Ah well, at least now I don't feel tempted to stray away from the Dragon Boxes.

Out of curiosity, any news on that Top Fights Collection they were gonna do? I remember them releasing a poll for fans to pick their favorite fights and the top 5 or 10 would be released on one set. Did that get cancelled or something?

Goku's emblems were on gold in DB, but I guess the artist likes it for DBZ, too. Odd.

In other news, I'm not crazy for 16:9, but I'm giving the first volume a shot so I can do a video review. As I said before, 16:9 Kai didn't kill me as the framing was pretty carefully done, but I largely prefer 4:3. The cover art looks super awesome, though, and the price is just right for these to sell really well.

The listing appears to have been taken off Walmart's site.

In fact, if you want to quickly create a popular image, simply over saturate the colors and increase the contrast. Maybe that got cancelled for this.

On another note. Has there ever been plans for Funimation to redub the movies with the Kai cast? I thought that would be really interesting to see. (Just leave Fusion Reborn alone..dont touch that SSJ3 transformation scene..)

I like the cover art not to crazy about the 16:9 though, but I'm still going to pick up the first one to give it a shot. The remastering of the audio tracks is also very interesting the level sets essentially just got lossless versions of the audio tracks Funimation has on the orange bricks.

This is an 80s/90s animated all-ages show that was popular amongst kids. It's not some potent super weapon that might fall into the wrong hands that we have to protect from evil.

I'll just wait for forum analysis and the Kanzenshuu review (if it happens). All though, if it's 16:9, it would have to look and sound nearly perfect for me to consider it. As for the movies being redubbed, that's probably about as likely as any of the pre-Kai TV series being redubbed.

I know they did bluray releases of the movies a few years back, though I'm not sure if it was the treatment Kai and the level sets got, or just a simple upscale. Bluray.com's reviews of the movies seem to point to the latter.

They weren't an upscale they went back to the film masters and scanned them at a 2k resolution. Since the film source for the movies is 35mm film the blu ray movies actually look pretty good but they're still nowhere near the treatment that the level sets got.

Which is why id love to see the movies get the level treatment with the Kai cast. If I remember correctly we have a big DBZ anniversary coming up and this would be a awesome way to celebrate it.

Well, I'll admit the cover art looks somewhat nice.... though where's Vegeta?

Verdict's still out on the video presentation, though.

Well, at least it's tilt & scan. That leaves me hopeful that it's not going to be awful.

Don't like how they're giving us the middle finger by saying it's a more modern experience, though.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
