I hope it's really only you.
I admit I'm a self proclaimed "quality whore". It may due to having a HD laptop screen but I honestly dont see much issue with the picture. If someone can point out what everyone is seeing id appreciate it.
I'm actually kinda enjoying it, as I've never owned DBZ in its entirety. Ever. I've got Dragon box 1, seasons 2, 6, 8 and 9 of the season set "orange bricks."
These most likely won't lose as much detail in the foreground as the old "orange brick" sets, so I might actually invest some money into them.

It's a happy little bush. Bob Ross would be pleased.

To be fair, it didn't really look like a bush in the original either.....

You have no idea how much it took to not do a Family Guy joke.

Err... it's not really a Family Guy joke. It's an "I'm an American and I grew up with PBS in the 1980s" joke :). I understand that Family Guy parodied it, but still...

It looks a hell of a lot more like a bush in the original when compared to the Blu-ray.
If anyone has any of the DB/DBZ/DBGT or Maho Tsuaki Sally Japanese single DVD's that they'd be interested in selling send me a PM and I'll see if we can work something out. ;).

I miss Bob Ross

I think the problem is that everything is kinda blobby now. and are separated super thick black lines. However, if they sell well, more power too them.

However, now that we see they have great quality 4:3 and they might have been contractually obligated to do Dbox short runs, I wouldn't mind them making there own Dbox-ish release they wouldn't have to sell limited of (minus betterr Japanese audio and NEP). But they sure can put better footage and x3 English Dialogue (Broadcast (where available)/Japanese music/Redub Season audio)

Even if it was DVD only I wouldn't care.

Gotta admit, I favored the level sets despite the grain. The line quality here is ridiculous. It's a higher def version of the Orange Bricks if you ask me....

What are you doing FUNimation? I really wish I could be around to listen in on the conversations between the people who make these kinds of decisions. Because at this point, to me it looks like they're just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. Orange Bricks did really well but had strong vocal opposition online. Dragon Boxes do okay, a different vocal opposition online. Blu-Ray "Level" sets do poorly, but have almost universal praise online, still gets canceled. Clearly the goal here is sales, not producing a quality product. The way this new release is formatted, it looks like they're trying to go for that Orange Brick audience. But I think the reason those "Level" sets sold poorly is because... well, maybe people are done buying DBZ. I feel like it has much less to do with widescreen/fullscreen and much more to do with the fact that Dragon Ball Z just is never going to sell like it used to. If you repackage the orange bricks, you're missing the point. Its the repackaging that's the problem. Not the formatting.

I guess I'll find out if I'm wrong based on how well these sell. My suspicion is that it's not going to work out like they're hoping. I don't know about anyone else but I'm really sick of Dragon Ball Z being "digitally remastered frame-by-frame 100% better this time I swear"

It would be funny if it weren't so sad.

You are not alone believe me. I have pretty much given up on future releases of the series and just sticking with my 8 Kai season sets. I'm not touching another DBZ bluray release unless its in the Level bluray quality and with the Kai dub cast.

You know... you're right. I was going to check it out since the price was so low... but the heck with it.

Pre-order canceled!

If they want one dime from me, it's going to have to be done right. If we are wrong I can always pick it up later for cheap. These pics basically show they aren't getting it done right.

Who knows, maybe after 9 BluRay seasons, they'll release the 4:3 super grain edition. That seems to be the trend with DB releases, right?

Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

No, it looks entirely bad. :P

Even though it's not the result we wanted... I'm kind of impressed that they managed to make an 80's cartoon look like something that was made this year. Everything looks so overly clean and digital. Even the background now look like digital Photoshop paintings... they totally changed the aesthetics of the source material.

Still not buying this thing though, unless we miraculously get better-sounding Japanese audio.

I'm guessing Kai is the best we're getting in terms of a Blu-Ray release anytime soon.

The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

It's insulting that they purposely make DBZ look like crap because they think that's what people want.

Well, none of the modern anime I watch have extremely thick outlines, coloring that hurts the eyes and watercolor backgrounds.
