Dodompa?

In the dub version of the "Budokai" and "Tenkaichi Budokai", Tenshinhan clearly says something like "Dodombre" when firing his small single beam attack. But I know it is spelled "Dodompa". Does anyone know why Tenshinhan mispronounces one of his best attacks?

He's saying "Dodon Ray" Which isn't really incorrect. I don't know what the direct translation for "pa" is, but I believe that Ray works as it's English substitute.

According to Wikipedia, Dodompa/Dodonpa doesn't really translate directly, because "dodon" is onomatopoeia for the sound an explosion makes, making the direct translation "Dodon Wave" or "Dodon Ray," like in the dub.

Actually, it's "dodonpa." With an 'n'. ^^;

And actually, it's "Budokai Tenkaichi," not the other way around.

Yeah the budokai thing is wrong, but it is spelled dodompa on my game.

Yeah, It's weird like that.

It says Dodompa on the screen but he says Dodon Ray.

It's always better to play with the Japanese voices on anyway.

波 (Pa) means wave and is the same as the last "ha" in Kamehame-ha.

The 'n' is sometimes written as a 'm' in romanisation because it is followed by a "p/b/v" sound. C.f. Janemba instead of Janenba. Both are good.

In with the old fansubs I used to have was an english dubbed version of Movie 5, years before Movie 5 was released by Funimation. In it, Goku yelled "Kame-Hame-WAVE!" Which I guess is also not far off.

I hated that dub Movie 5 though, Piccolo sounded like a demented little gnome or something.

Well, in Budokai 3, at some point when Tenshinhan is off training with Yamcha, he uses the attack on him and it is spelled as "Dodonpa".

That's right. I had it backwards. Dodon is the part that translates as a "boom" or "bang" and "pa" is the part that means "Wave"
