When did super saiyans stop being special to you? Did they?

Post by TheBlackPaladin » Sat Oct 26, 2013 11:24 pm

I would never go so far as to label the concept of super saiyans a "bad" thing, but at some point, the "wow factor" was lost for me. When I first saw Goku transform, it was one of those jaw-dropping, "I'm gonna remain silent for a few seconds in honor of the coolness that I just saw" moments. And it remained that way for quite some time...

.......But then, slowly but surely, everyone and their mothe--sorry--everyone and their father became super saiyans. Then evolved super saiyans. Then a Legendary Super Saiyan. Then Super Saiyan 2s. Then Super Saiyan 3s. Then a fused Super Saiyan. Then Super Saiyan 4s. Then the videogames stretched it even further and continue to do so. At this rate, I'm half-expecting Toei to introduce a storyline in the next videogame where it's revealed that Chaotzu is, in fact, a saiyan, and becomes a super saiyan.

For me, the last time I felt the super saiyan "wow factor" was when Gohan went super saiyan 2. Everything else after that felt like a somewhat expected, natural progression.

PS: Also, sorry to ask what's probably a stupid question, but on a side note, should "saiyan," or "super saiyan" be capitalized?

A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Personally, I'm all for everyone getting the forms and more forms in general. Provided they are done correctly. Make it seem sensible and I'm good. I'm not saying I wanna see everyone get SSJ3 like in Heroes, but if every Saiyan reaches SSJ1-2, fine with me.

I actually came in originally when Toonami was airing Ocean repeats, so kaio-ken was the big thing and kind of stuck with me more (I especially liked how it was a dangerous technique to use that if you mess up could mess you up.) and still sticks with me more.

I do think Gohan's ssj2 was the last big "whoa" for me in terms of ssj. Ssj3 was "What happened to his eyebrows?", ssj4 was "It's so fluffy!", and ssjg was "OMG how adorable and magenta; I love it!"

It never really stopped being special to me. I always liked the fact that a warrior race had to train to unlock the forms full potential, SSJ3. SSJ4 was probably the most interesting form aside from the original SSJ form. It's concept is pretty damn cool if you ask me. I just wish Goku's fur didn't appear pink  . Vegeta got it right with the blood red fur.
Vegeta: "Funny... I seem to recall Kakarot being fed the same information right before he transformed; the distinct look on your faces when he went Super Saiyan didn't exactly inspire confidence. One does not predict or calculate power like ours."

I came into the show directly at that point... so they never felt special to me at all. DBZ as a whole was still wowing me; there was no time to pick apart one thing I liked about it. It was on five days a week and I rushed home to bask in its glory. And they never told you when they would take a break so I prayed that when I got home tomorrow that the episode would be new.

It feels like its always just been a part of the series to me. I'm sure watching from the beginning, or even the beginning of Z, would leave a different impression. When people whine that there are too many Super Saiyans, or that Super Saiyans still exist in Dragon Ball Online, or that Goku has his own special forms, it seems silly to me. That's just what this series... does.

The moment Goku fur was Pink(In universe is Red. But animation made it Pink). I'm sorry but that killed it for me. I always though each form was great up till that point. I don't care for how Trunks and GOten got it(Since Goten is my fave) no more. The form looks badass so does it matter how many people get it(Well..don't take that to literal) . With the video games. I don't mind everyone getting ssj3(How long until Gohan gets it despite Mystic?). Since they are video games and the what if(s) are apart of it. However if one day they make a new SSJ form that's is where I most likely stop caring for SSJ.

On a side note. I'm not counting SSG since to me THAT IS NOT A SUPER SAIYAN FORM

I think for me it has to be in GT - as a Super Saiyan is relegated to little more than an aesthetic trope/brand statement.

I think that during the Buu arc with Trunks and Goten attaining the form it comes fairly close to moving into that territory, but I think that the saving grace lies in the fact that Toriyama uses the form to highlight their prodigious nature.

I dunno, I feel like the buff forms that Vegeta and Trunks had, as well as Super Saiyan 2, were practical results of further training. But Super Saiyan 3 just sort of lost the mark for me. It doesn't really make any sense. I always had this idea that, the reason their hair stood on end and went gold was because they were so overflowing with energy that it changed their hair and eyes. But, the idea that the eyebrows disappear and somehow their hair grows long just seems forced... and of course it makes no sense. So, when they revert to a lower form or to their base form, suddenly their eyebrows pop back and their hair shortens? Meh.

Super Saiyan 4 would've been a lot cooler to me if it had not been called Super Saiyan; I think they should've emphasized it to be some sort of "missing link" (another nod to the ape theme) form between Oozaru and Super Saiyan... but instead the execution came across as confusing, poor fan fiction.

Strangely, though, I see Trunks and Goten's ability early on to transform with little effort seemed like a move to decidedly cheapen the form by Toriyama. Even Vegeta points it out. It's times like this that I have to remind myself that Toriyama never took the series half as seriously as fans do. :?

Watching the series as a kid, a new form like "ascendant Saiyan" and SSJ3 was always exciting, even though I though SSJ3 looked utterly absurd (because it does. Akira Toriyama at his best). Even as a kid Super Saiyans started losing their legendary status for me when Gohan became the forth of them, and I thought it had really gone too far when Goten and Trunks got it from nothing. The worst thing about it was that there was no reason for them to be Super Saiyans. That didn't achieve anything, and Super Gotenks 3 could have just been a fused SSJ1, which would be ultra powerful anyway (uh, Vegetto?).

In fact, none of the forms other than 1, 4 and God were even necessary at all. The others could easily have just been "look how strong I am from all of my training" and "this is Gohan's hidden power". SSJ2 and the grades are nothing but a stronger SSJ1 anyway, and SSJ3 just really didn't achieve anything.

All of Goku's transformations had me on the edge of my seat. Super Saiyan three was amazing, and four was unexpected for some reasoBut I think Super Saiyans themselves stopped being 'special' around the end of the Cell saga, because I was like, 'What Saiyan isn't a Super Saiyan?'

Dragon Ball Heroes with its Oprah style Super Saiyan giveaways made me resent the form. Whenever I see news about character xyz now being able to transform into that mode, I just go "ugh".
"I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.

Every single character transforming after Goku (besides SSJ2 Gohan) wasn't a big of a "wow" for me really. For some reason though SSJ4 Vegeta was pretty cool the first time I saw him transform. Transformations nowadays don't feel as amazing for me though, especially transformations from that DB Heroes game. Not a SSJ but the only character that I did really like from that card game at first glance was Baby Janemba. I don't know what it is about it, but I love the design.

It used to bother me, but now it really doesn't. However when I started seeing everyone get SSJ3, that bothered me. SSJ is one thing, but SSJ3..really!

Goku transformed suddenly, so it was shocking. Trunks was an unknown gut suddenly turning Super Saiyan, and Super Saiyan was still fresh & cool, so it was shocking as well. Vegeta was expected to achieve Super Saiyan, but he was still cool because Super Saiyan was the strongest thing so far. Gohan turning Super Saiyan didn't look that much special, since it was expected, and we had many characters above Super Saiyan at that point, and Vegeta & Trunks had already gone beyond Super Saiyan. Future Gohan was also expected to be a Super Saiyan, and he didn't have any great transformation scene. When Goten & Trunks got Super Saiyan though, anything special about Super Saiyan that had remained vanished. Of course, it was only logical that Gotenks & Vegetto would be able to transform. And then in Dragon Ball Online, we get a Super Saiyan army...

Super Saiyan Grade 2 didn't feel much impressive, other than the "wow huge muscles, awesome!".
Super Saiyan Grade 3 looked more awesome, but turned out to be lame do to being completely useless.
Super Saiyan Full Power was interesting because we saw Goku & Gohan as Super Saiyans all the time, with Goku being confident, relaxed, and so powerful.
Legendary Super Saiyan was cool because "wow, very huge muscles, blank eyes, psychopathic, and all powerful!", but that's it.
Super Saiyan 2 felt awesome for Gohan (Cell Games), but Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan (Boo arc) didn't make the form very special.
Super Saiyan 3 Goku was also awesome, and Gotenks transforming was surprising, but not as awesome as Goku. Then Dragon Ball Heroes & other games introduced SS3 Vegeta, F. Trunks, GT Trunks, Gogeta, and F. Gohan... Though I liked (Legendary) Super Saiyan 3 Broli when he was first revealed.
Super Saiyan 4 was unique, cool, and I liked how it looked different to everyone. Though I guess after Vegeta getting the form the way he did, it should be very easy for Gohan, Goten, and Trunks (and Gotenks) to get it as well.
Super Saiyan God is cool, but it's very easy to get for the heroes. However, I doubt it would be as easy for them to make it permanent like Goku managed to do.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

I just think that as I wore myself on the series, the magic just naturally faded, as it will for everything that you obsess over for a long time. Super saiyan can't be "special" forever, really, but I can still watch kid Gohan's transformation (in Japanese ;P) over and over again.
