Regarding the news...

Interesting use of "arc" instead of "saga". I know it's an extremely old fan quip/FUNimation thing, but I've never known Viz to apply arc divisions at all anyway.

Also, another chance at Viz not sucking and giving us an uncensored release. Anything questionable in these sets of chapters?

The only censorship in the whole Z portion of the manga are only a few panels of Gohan's penis (at the end of the battle with Vegeta) and some alterations to guns in the end of the android arc (future #17's gun) and in the buu arc (the guns of the guys who shoot Mr. Satan).

I like the original logo better; the "Dragon Ball for an 'O'" doesn't look as... stock photo-ish? Makeshift-like? PowerPoint ClipArt? It's too simple.

For better or for worse, I try to give the benefit of the doubt.

I mean, really though, all Viz has to do is just print their digital versions (with a more appropriate font, of course), and their color release would be fine.

The only reason they're applying the division is because the words "Saiyan Volume" or "Saiyan Compilation" ("サイヤ人編") is on the cover and they made sure to translate everything on the cover.

You do realize size-wise, it's far bigger than the Japanese release or normal Tankobans, right? I mentioned that Mike left that out of his original post, but I don't know if he noticed.

Viz said it would be around the size of an American Graphic Novel, which is closer to the size of an issue of Jump than a tankobon.

To compare from Amazon dimension listings:

Dragon Ball Full Color Volume 1:

10.2 x 6.6 x 0.8 inches

Dragon Ball Vizbig Volume 1:

1.5 x 5.8 x 8.5 inches

Dragon Ball (SJ Edition) Volume 1:

0.6 x 5.1 x 7.5 inches

Gotta flip either the Full Color one or the other two around to match it, but it's 2.7 inches taller than the SJ edition and 1.7 inches taller than the Vizbig edition. It's 1.5 inches longer than the SJ edition and 0.8 inches longer than the Vizbig edition. Of course, while being bigger than the SJ edition in page count (by 0.2 inches), but smaller than the Vizbig edition due to having less than 2 volumes of material (a 0.7 inch difference).

Also, giving the volumes titles by arc would give them a good excuse to put out volumes for the original Dragon Ball stories without having an odd volume count if each arc has their own volume numbering.

Of course, they'd need to commission new covers or wait for Shueisha to do it.

They're also not calling it Dragon Ball Z like before. Maybe they're finally done with that? The 3 in 1s might not be split up in that case.

That's an interesting point. Removing the Z could be the start to them doing all of the series under one title.

Like I said above, I'm really hoping we get print releases for the first 16 volumes in full color as well. Uncut of course. Might end up picking this up at my LCS. Could get it online, but it's coming out close to volume 5 of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin, and I've already got that pre-ordered...

Japanese DB Full Color Vol 1 dimensions: 6.9 x 0.9 x 4.6 inches

Viz DB Full Color Volume 1 dimensions: 10.2 x 6.6 x 0.8 inches

The smallest number is the width, which changes by page count. The largest number is the height of the book, and the middle number is the length of the book.

According to the dimension, the Viz version is almost as long as the Japanese version is tall. But, the Japanese version is slightly larger...perhaps some content is missing, or the pages are slightly thinner.

So yeah, the English version is huge by comparison.

Usually I'd wait and see if they release full-colour equivalents of the first 16 volume before purchasing, as I don't want to end up with what I consider an incomplete release, but I feel like I should show my support for these to infinitesimally boost the chances of them releasing more of the series.

Do you guys think VIZ will release the Cell & Majin Buu Arcs physically unlike the Japanese release?

I guess that would depend heavily on the sales figures these pull in. I imagine if the demand is high enough, they'll definitely print it.
