A new smartphone game — following on the heels of the occasionally-disastrous Dragon Ball: Tap Battle — is coming soon to both Android and iOS devices in Japan called simply Dragon Ball RPG: Shōnen-hen (“Boyhood Chapter”).
The game is revealed in today’s December 2013 issue of V-Jump in Japan with a note that it is coming soon (apparently this very month). Tap Battle came slightly ahead of schedule with its original Android release, so we should see Dragon Ball RPG rather soon, as well — October is just about over!
With the game having a “Boyhood Chapter” subtitle, it is likely we will see this game cover the early portion of the Dragon Ball storyline with a possible follow-up down the road covering later parts of the story.

It's never a good sign when the game's key art is recycled.

Yeah me too. I wouldn't mind another 2D side-scroller of Dragon Ball, I love these type of games.
I'd like to play DB Heroes Ultimate Mission on my 2DS but it's region locked so no deal.
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:

Pretty interesting. Though I'm very skeptical given it's "predecessor" was Tap Battle and it's a phone game.

Funny you should mention that. Both Tap Battle, and this game share a common Dragon Ball logo:
I wonder if this logo will be used for all mobile games.

I wonder if that means their connection is even stronger. I mean, what's the possibility this could be by the same developers?

The official site has launched:
http://dbrpg.bngames.net/
Some of the sprites look really nice, but I'm not a fan of Goku's.

Piccolo's sprite looks exactly like the one used in Advanced Adventure. They should've just used Goku's as well. But, yeah, the rest look alright.

Yeah, not a big fan of Gokuu's balloon head but everything else looks great.

They might as well have re-used as much of Advanced Adventure's sprites as possible. To my knowledge, it's not that well known, so I imagine people wouldn't mind. Also, they re-used the Goku art from Origins 2 anyway so it makes no difference.

Piccolo have the same stance of Advance Adventure, but it's definitely not the same sprite. This one looks much better,

Wow that came out fast.
I really like the sprite-work in this.

The fights look like the ones on attack of the saiyans. That's nice. It also covers up to the Piccolo saga, so it ties well with attack of the saiyans.
The promotional artwork is a bit weird, both goku and krilin seem way bigger than they should be.

Huh, the trailer narration almost sounds like Yuko Minaguchi at first. I don't think it's her, but...similar voices at least.
I wonder what the chances are of this coming out stateside or being ported to 3DS or something, because this looks pretty fun.

It looks similar to Attack of the Saiyans.

This may be a little off-topic, but the fact that all Dragon Ball (as in "pre-Saiyan arc Dragon Ball") games seem to go only as far as the Piccolo Daimao arc perplexes me. The only instances I can recall the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai being a thing are in Dragon Ball 3 Gokuuden, the first Super Butouden (which is actually a DBZ game), and Idainaru Son Gokuu Densetsu (DBZ game, again).
Granted, this is called the "Boyhood Chapter", but it would be nice to play trough that arc again. I guess it's best to save it for non-cellphone title.

The 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai can be considered a part of Dragon Ball Z, which is why it's featured in a lot of DBZ games (Super Gokuden 2, Attack of the Saiyans, etc.) and omitted in DB games. All the characters are already grown up, and the fights are already like those in DBZ.

I wonder if there are any reviews of this game anywhere? It'd be interesting to read...

I think it was omitted in Advanced Adventure due to the fact that an entire new sprite set would have to be made for Goku and Piccolo, or the GBA didn't have enough memory for all of Dragon Ball, or both.
