But the context in the question from the previous post is, whether or not the English subtitled bluray release from Hong Kong will be playable on an American PS3. As explained, Southeast Asia and North America share the region code for bluray discs. So yes, it will be playable on North American PS3s. The DVD (which will be Region 3 for Hong Kong viewers) would not playable on a North American PS3.

As an official release from Hong Kong, I'd have to assume they'd be at least passable.
Sometimes they have really good subtitles that look suspiciously like they just took fansub translations, or just had a competent translator, or sometimes they're just nonsense that's probably just the Chinese subtitles automatically translated by a machine.

Image
DMC, good translations. (Though she's speaking English for this part, only screencap I took.)
Image
Gundam Seed, confusing translations.

I remember in the Gundam Seed DVDs Athran's name changes several times, it's mostly written as Asuran, but it slowly evolves into "Osila" if I remember correctly. And in DMC the characters speak very fast and there's always words on the screen so you'll get like a sentence appearing one second to translate the text, then that'll vanish before you could read it and show what the characters are saying.

I really want to see how the DBZ release looks though. I'd imagine since it's a movie it might have a better than usual translation since the DVDs I have are from years ago. Is it coming out on DVD too?

Yes, the fansubs for this series were good...

Sadly, your examples aren't valid in this case since "Gundam Seed" never provided any English subtitles in its legitimate VCD/DVD release. The screenshots you've provided are from bootlegged copies.

And also, a little more info on the Hong Kong bluray release of "DBZ: Battle of Gods". Expect a release date somewhere around mid-November. Pretty sure this info is accurate considering my experience from shopping through Hong Kong.

Crap, I knew there was something wrong with them. Oh well, I bought them years ago before I even knew the word bootleg, and got them from legitimate sites too.

HK subs are known to be pretty bad. Here are some examples that I posted in the past.

Once again, invalid.
All bootlegs. Yes, even the one with Ng Man-Tat which is obviously a webrip.

Word on the Hong Kong streets is, DBZ: Battle of Gods is being distributed to bluray, DVD and VCD by the fine folks at Deltamac. I think they're the same guys who have home video distribution rights to everything FOX in Hong Kong and Taiwan. It's even listed as "Coming Soon" on their official site.

As much as I loved the movie(aside from the soundtrack which I HATED), I'm starting to think that they should've went down the "dark" path like most of the DBZ movies were, like going by the screenwriter's decision instead of Toriyama's or just combine the ideas together like the screenwriter's story concept and the Bils' early concept and Toriyama's Super Saiyan God and the unusual movie ending by the fight ending in a draw. Like I know this movie was actually aiming for kids but they also need to think about the longtime fans too, which is what I thought the screenwriter was going for, every fan in the world. I honestly thought they were holding back on the violence.

Hopefully if they do another DBZ movie, it should be like the earlier DBZ movies by going by the "dark plot" path along with having more violence.

Oh, I'm not talking about Dragon Ball movies here. I'm just talking about movies in general. Movies you go all the way to the city to see with friends. Movies you watch in massive rooms with elevated seating and tons of other people. It doesn't feel like it'd be one of those. Now, you could chalk this up to the fact that I haven't actually seen BOG in theatres, but the thing is, the One Piece films (like Strong World) give me that sort of vibe where "this feels like the franchise I love on a much grander scale, on the big screen"; and I'm not even a huge fan of One Piece. A better example is probably The Simpsons Movie. That sort of excitement you get from a movie being based on your favourite franchise- I wanted that feeling from watching Battle of Gods and, like I said, the problem was that it didn't feel like a movie to begin with.
Another thing would be the colors. The color palette they used was pretty bright (and a little limited) for a theatrical film, when a lot of franchise-movies use a darker/more varied palette.
YES, definitely. I always noticed this sort of thing in The Spongebob Squarepants Movie when I was younger:

I find having more oranges and reds in the colour palette really helps build the sort of cinematic atmosphere we've been talking about (Yes, One Piece again):

I just saw the movie this weekend. Managed to avoid the spoilers.

It was awesome. And weird, because it wasn't what I quite expected. And that's a very good thing.

Well, I'm a little late in posting, but I saw this movie on October 20th when it aired up in Brisbane as part of the Japan Film Festival.

I'm glad I was spoiled on all the plot important details beforehand, because my expectations were set low enough that I was able to come away without being disappointed. It would have sucked going all the way to Brisbane to see it without being ready for that.

Anyway, the movie hadn't changed my opinion on anything I thought going into it. I still didn't like the Godly ki, or Super Saiyan God, etc. The only thing this movie had for me was the gags and character interactions, which were enjoyable (and also, the thing I hadn't been completely spoiled on). Even knowing some of Beers' quirks before-hand, his personality still surprised me, and I think he was given an excellent personality without being too quirky. Even Whis was enjoyable despite not doing much. The moment Kaio and Goku drove around his dinky little planet had the audience laughing harder than any other scene or gag in the movie. :P

I feel the movie really lost a lot of it's humour once it got to Bulma's birthday party, but some of the moments were still funny. Once the fighting started, and the plot took centre stage, I was completely uninterested. It didn't help that I had already seen everyone vs Beers to know it was going to be bland before hand. And even as a big fan of Vegeta, his spotlight just really left a bad taste in my mouth.

The Goku and Beers battle... just really sucked, to me. From the start to the very finish, it was the lowest point of the movie for me. I was glad once it was over, and that the movie had some more interactions after that (Goku's teasting of Vegeta was funny). The credits were really cool.

Also, I don't know if anyone else who saw this in theatres got this, but at my theatre there was a message from Masakazu Morita (Whis' VA) before the film started. I didn't even know he was voicing Whis at that point, so I was pretty damn surprised to find that out right before the movie.

Definitely agree that this didn't feel like a movie. Just felt like a very long special... one that refused to end once the fighting started.

Overall, my opinion of the film hasn't changed much, if at all. But at least I was able to enjoy the bits that I enjoyed out of it, rather than nothing. I'm not sure if I can watch this again once (well, if) it gets dubbed by FUNi, though.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

I personally loved the fighting and agree that it did not feel like a movie, but I loved it!!! To me it felt like extra episodes of the anime that just had not yet been released, sort of like the begining of a new arc with the mini boss intro like Raditz...I loved it and hope more comes out moving in the direction of adventures of Goku and Vegeta in discovering their own inherent godly ki through hard work and training!

How I enjoy the anime:

Was it subtitled, and if it yes, was it good?
