Questions about Namekians

1) Is the term "Namekian" a correct term to use? I know people from America are called Americans, but I recall people arguing that "Nameks" is correct based on Japanese or something.

2) How many people live on Namek? The History of Ever says:

--By this year, Namek’s population was still only 110. 86% were of the Dragon Clan, while 14% were Warrior-type Namekians.

But wasn't Cargo Namek's 109th child meaning that there were 111 total Namekians? I'm probably fucking up the math somewhere or missing something.

3) When was Dende born? On another site someone referenced the DBWiki timeline during Age 757 as the year that Dende was born. It didn't provide a reference (surprise surprise). I double checked with The History of Ever and it didn't give a specific date either. Is this based on anything in the anime or English dub?

The term "Nameksei-jin" means "Planet Namek people." When you adapt that into English, you get "Namekian." Perfectly valid. Same thing for "Saiya-jin" to "Saiyan," and so forth. Less so for "tsufuru-jin" to "Tuffle." That one's a bit weird.

I'm not sure what you're asking here in regards to the population. Are you adding Kami and/or Piccolo to the number, or...?

If it's not sourced and has never been listed in any of Herms' translations or what-not, then Dende probably doesn't have an official birth year. Just going by his looks, he should be pretty darn young, but we don't have anything specific. He could be technically older than Piccolo for all we know!

Herms calculated the total number of Namekians before Freeza arrived to be 110. It's based on adding up the total number of villagers plus Saichoro and Nail. But Cargo was Namek's 109th child. Wouldn't it be 109 + Nail + Soichoro = 111? But I think I just realized where I was messing up: Nail is child #whatever where #1 ≤ Nail < #109. So 108 Namekians live in the villages and Nail and Saichoro live on their own. 110 makes sense.

I don't understand why you're adding this when it's already been answered, and your information is incorrect even AFTER the above posts.

In Japanese, the people are referred to as "namekku-seijin" (ナメック星人). Note the "sei" in there. It means "planet" (or really "star", but yeah, in this case it's the planet). The "jin" is the standard "person" you see often (in things like "Jinzoningen" and "Saiyajin").

In this case, they're the people/race/beings of the Planet Namek. Note how this is different from the "Saiyajin", who are people of the race named "Saiya" who themselves are from the planet named "Vegeta" (惑星ベジータ or wakusei bejiita).

I don't really know enough about the roots of words and how suffixes get appended in "English" to really comment on "Namekians" versus "Nameks", but "Nameks" sure sounds dumb.

"Tsufruian" gets tossed around a lot. I forget what's in our style guide here on the site, but that's what I use!

I've personally adapted it as "Tsufrian." One or two too many vowels in "Tsufruian" for my taste, though I could probably get used to it if I had to.

Something like "sue-free-an" or "sue-fry-an" is my guess based on the spelling. I don't know what's wrong with "sue-frew-ee-an" (Tsufruian) though. The "frew" part reflects that their name-pun comes from fruit like the Saiyans' names come from vegetables. (We're probably just talking spelling preference though.)
