Re: DBZ Composed By Hans Zimmer?
Absolutely not.
I certainly don't think he's anywhere close to being one of the best musicians of our time either.
Are we meant to be discussing whether his current pieces could work in Dragon Ball or whether we think he could compose scores that would work with the series?
If it's the latter then perhaps, the guy is certainly talented and cares for context so it'd be interesting to see how he handles the general Dragon Ball music themes.
If it's the former then absolutely not.

Re: DBZ Composed By Hans Zimmer?
Zimmer's is great and knows how to do good music, but sadly his scores sound the same. it has become a little bit dull, if he could do like he composed The LAST Samurai I'm in, but John Williams would suit dbz MUCH better. If I can bring japanese composers, Joe Hisaishi would be cool, Yasunori Mitsuda did a freaking great Soul Sacrifice score

I did heard some of his music, but didn't bother to see author. Btw his music would be good in few epic dbz scenes...

I'm surprised at the negative feedback. I love Zimmer's work. I do think that in the case he did compose, he would make new stuff for the show and not go through pieces he already did, but do this. Open two tabs, find a DBZ fight video on youtube, and use the other tab to play Zimmer's music over it.
I found "To Die For" from the Lion King to work really well.
Heres a few amv's using his work.

I dont know about everyone else, but I personally love the idea.

Re: DBZ Composed By Hans Zimmer?
I suppose I can kinda hear it with The Last Samurai score since it actually has a somewhat eastern feel the music but, like most of Zimmer's work, it feels too grand.
Perhaps a very dark movie involving the franchise could work him but aside from that, nope, I disagree.

Re: DBZ Composed By Hans Zimmer?
While he gained a lot of fans during the past decade, he's also infamous for composing a lot of overly simplistic, repetitive and minimalistic scores. The fact that he managed to influence so many composers with his current style and distinct sound is also a somewhat major gripe among film score fans. I'm not particularly fond of most of his works from the past decade myself, but back in the '90s he was pretty decent and had a lot of potential before settling into that loud, overly simple comfort zone(hell, The Lion King and The Prince of Egypt's scores are some of my personal favourites).KentalSSJ6 wrote:I'm surprised at the negative feedback.
I could see a '90s-early '00s Zimmer tackling something like Dragon Ball Z and pulling off something good, but there's no way current Zimmer's style would fit with the series at all. That is unless he has a competent collaborator to keep him in check like John Powell, as those two worked together on the two Kung Fu Panda films' scores, and they were fairly decent for modern Zimmer-related projects. Those had some actual complexity and thematic depth to them.
Outside of obvious choices like John Williams, other movie composers I'd like to see pulling off a Dragon Ball score would be John Ottman, David Arnold, Michael Giacchino, and James Horner. I'd like to see Elliot Goldenthal and George Fenton too, but I'm not sure if they even score movies much anymore.

Oooofff, yes please.Michael Giacchino
He's one of my favourite composers working today.

Re: DBZ Composed By Hans Zimmer?
Funny actually that Zimmer, like Bruce Faulconer, has 'composers in residence' write a lot of the music that he puts his name to.

Re: DBZ Composed By Hans Zimmer?
Given that Yasunori Mitsuda did the soundtrack for RPG masterpiece Chrono Trigger, it would be nice to see the guy lend his hand to Dragon Ball. That said, I don't know what Toriyama and Mitsuda's relationship was like during CT's development, plus the two may no longer be in contact considering the game came out in 1995. Either way, I'm sure Toei are in need of someone to replace Yamamoto as chief DB composer.

How bout Steve Joblonsky? He did Steamboy, Battleship, and recently Ender's Game.

Re: DBZ Composed By Hans Zimmer?
It wouldn't be that much of a difference compared to Zimmer. He's from the same flock, only his music is even more simplistic, generic and dissonant. Steamboy's like the one really good exception and that was done almost a decade ago.KentalSSJ6 wrote:How bout Steve Joblonsky? He did Steamboy, Battleship, and recently Ender's Game.

Re: DBZ Composed By Hans Zimmer?
No, just no. This makes DBZ feel like another show. This music feels way to "heavy" (not in a heavy metal sense, but it's just too present) and dramatic.KentalSSJ6 wrote:What do you guys think? Would you like to see DBZ composed by one of the best musicians of our time?
