Did the money FUNimation made from OB sales fund for their DBox release? If so, any chance the money they make from this Blu-Ray release will fund for a (hopefully) better Blu-Ray release?

It's something that people like to throw out as a "positive" for the bricks, but wouldn't everything they release now theoretically fund everything they release later?Black_Anime_Fan wrote:Did the money FUNimation made from OB sales fund for their DBox release?

Yeah, I don't really like that line of thought.
It's not like DBZ money goes in to only and specifically to the exclusion of everything else fund more DBZ stuff. If anything, it's the opposite: DBZ revenue is their guaranteed play-money to allow them to take chances and innovate in other areas (read: with other properties).

Wasn't really giving a "positive" for the bricks as you say, but was giving more of a straightforward question.B wrote:It's something that people like to throw out as a "positive" for the bricks, but wouldn't everything they release now theoretically fund everything they release later?Black_Anime_Fan wrote:Did the money FUNimation made from OB sales fund for their DBox release?

The picture quality and cropping looks great yet people are complaining because it's in 16:9 AR but what if it were in 4:3 AR and they still had the same kind of remastering would that be okay then? Regardless of the detail loss?Black_Anime_Fan wrote:Did the money FUNimation made from OB sales fund for their DBox release? So-called "purist fans" tend to be the most hypocrite fans of all because of their elitist behaviours, well, Amazon's Dragon Ball Z Season 1 Blu-ray page is an obvious proof.
From what I've seen I want to own every single set of these, sure Toei Animation or FUNi could later release it on 4:3 AR but would that make me want to purchase after I have these 16:9 AR releases? Nope. I have the Dragon Boxes for 4:3 AR experience.
Anyhow, here's hoping Amazon will delete all those fake reviews so that the people who paid for it can share their opinion about the product they've bought.

No, it looks horrendous. If it were 4:3, it'd still be absolutely disgusting. DNR is not okay under any circumstances and there's a reason reviewers at sites like Blu-Ray.com look down on it with regards to any product.dbboxkaifan wrote:The picture quality and cropping looks great yet people are complaining because it's in 16:9 AR but what if it were in 4:3 AR and they still had the same kind of remastering would that be okay then? You don't have to be a fan of the show to understand that and since you are a fan, I find it even more baffling that you think this is okay.

What FUNimation's doing is what the fansub AnimeClipse did to Dragon Ball Kai. They made it look modern, colourful and left the classic-ness behind.
Kai Original Vs. Kai AnimeClipse
Now comparing this to FUNimation's DBZ BD release:
AC used filters whereas FUNimation used a professional remastering system yet both have detail loss but imo, I'd take their versions over the original because I'm tired of seeing the old, dirty, grainy and 4:3 AR editions. This is far better than what people would get from the Orange Bricks.

They're both terrible, and they should both be ashamed.
At least one of them has the excuse of being a business with actual money to be made trying to fool people.

The DBoxes and Level Sets did a much better job on making the show look great and (somewhat) modern, while still having that "classic-feel" intact, without hurting the footage in any way with shit like DVNR, cropped AR, and crappy colors. DBZ was never meant to look really bright, really colorful and blurry.dbboxkaifan wrote:What FUNimation's doing is what the fansub AnimeClipse did to Dragon Ball Kai. With all the bad comments on the Amazon page, it might scare off a lot of potential buyers. xD
Though I expect most sales to come from in-store.

1) The colours used are accurate as they're close to the original Japanese broadcast.Black_Anime_Fan wrote:The DBoxes and Level Sets did a much better job on making the show look great and (somewhat) modern, while still having that "classic-feel" intact, without hurting the footage in any way with shit like DVNR, cropped AR, and crappy colors. 2) Dragon Boxes and Kai (even on Blu-ray) looked blurry, the only exception is the Level's which were cancelled.
3) Kai also tried to be colourful with its new scenes and it worked but then it clashed with the original footage.
Reason why Kai fits into this discussion is because it's DBZ all over again but with less filler.
Dragon Box Vs. Original Broadcast Colours

You see, Dragon Box did not have the proper colours that the original broadcast had which even the awful Orange Bricks did a more precise job in that aspect.

Seeing this comment posted on this forum by a person with over 5k posts is just shocking. 1. The colors are about as bad and inaccurate as those "4K remastered" videos on YouTube, the original Japanese broadcast never included neon.dbboxkaifan wrote:1) The colours used are accurate as they're close to the original Japanese broadcast.Black_Anime_Fan wrote:The DBoxes and Level Sets did a much better job on making the show look great and (somewhat) modern, while still having that "classic-feel" intact, without hurting the footage in any way with shit like DVNR, cropped AR, and crappy colors. 2. The DBoxes and Kai may have been a bit blurry at best, but still retained detail and looked nowhere near as bad as this new release.
3. Kai gets a pass on trying to look more colorful and modern, since it was meant to represent what DBZ would look like if it were animated in 2010-2011, with or without the reanimated scenes.

Occasionally I wish I were so ignorant that I can enjoy FUNi's stupid releases without thinking. I'd be happier that way.

I was talking to MarcFBR on twitter a few days ago and I said that it seems weird that FUNimation is doing this and not a DBox release of Dragon Ball or the movies. Marc responded with saying they either can't due to licensing problems or they did the numbers and they don't work. The latter is confusing as FUNimation had to have known when releasing the Dragon Boxes that it was a very niche product, and would only sell to people who knew what they were. I say they did a pretty good job. The only Dragon Box in stock that I've seen is the 5th one. Every other one is a second hand retailer. So clearly the Dragon Boxes sold to FUNimations projections. So I guess I'm confused why they chose this instead of doing Dragon Ball or the movies? I mean, Dragon Ball has had only 2 releases, and the Blue Bricks don't really look that great.

A cheap, shitty, insulting DBZ product that gets into the hands of the masses is always going to do better than ANY type of DB or DBGT product. That's why they haven't gone back to that well.
