Soundtracks You Changed Your Opinion On a Second Time?

Post by theoriginalbilis » Tue Jul 09, 2013 5:33 pm

I have another question for you folks:

Are there any Dragon Ball soundtracks that you liked or disliked initially, but upon a future listen, changed your opinion of it?

For example, I didn't like the music for Legends or Hyper Dimension when I first heard them, but recently, I re-listened to the OSTs, and I really like them now. I also used to like the Shuki Levy/Faulconer Productions score back in the late 90's-early 2000's, but to myself in 2013, they don't stand up to listening by themselves (too much "filler/goofy" music for my tastes.)

Feel free to share your DragonBall music stories here!
Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

I was always very big fan of Shunsuke Kikuchi music. When I listened to all released pieces on CD - my opinion dramatically changed. I've become hundred times bigger fan than I was before :D

I used to loathe anything that wasn't Faulconer out of pure ignorance. It took a while for Kikuchi to grow on me. I love it to death now.

Me too.

As for the games, at first I found Legendary Super Warriors soundtrack to be grating, but later I grew to really like it. Legacy of Goku II pulled off the Faulconer music way better than the show did, and I used to dislike the Raging Blast 2/Tenkaichi 2 music, but lately I've gotten fond of it. "Dark Half" makes my 1 on 5 fights a lot more epic.

I found out I don't despise the faulconer score as much as I thought. Perhaps nostalgia helped. Some songs I really like and some suck. Most seem to be average though.

I used to also think everything that wasn't Faulconer sucked but now Kikuchi is pretty good. Solid State Scouter and Spirit vs Spirit FTW.

That's been the same with me. I've found myself listening to occassional Faulconer pieces so often, yet I absolutely despised it a while ago. I guess it was the more worst pieces that I still refuse to listen to, that put me off the whole lot.

I did like the Kai score at first, probably just riding the excitement of the series itself. Now I feel like it was pretty average, aside from a select few songs (and the inserts!). It's not necessarily the scandal, because that doesn't really bother me. I feel like all art is inspired by other works.

"Over saturation is easy. Just drag the slider to the right and there you are: instant interest. And certainly, the majority of the public likes saturated color images. In fact, if you want to quickly create a popular image, simply over saturate the colors and increase the contrast. While you may not achieve a sophisticated image, you will achieve an image that will please a less demanding audience." - Alain Briot

I think I only really despised it because of the stereotypical dbz dub fan kept hyping the music as if it was a godly gift that enhanced the show over actual dialogue and acting ability.

I used to like the Faulconer score but when I went to rewatch the show in late 2011, I couldn't stand it.

I wasn't too much of a fan of WE GOTTA POWER but the more I listened to it, I started to rank it as one of my favorites.

I wouldn't say I loathed anything besides Faulconer, but more that just I didn't get it; I got so used to the idea that DBZ was some sort of hyper-intense show, that the Kikuchi soundtrack sounded out of place to me. Watching the series from the beginning of Dragon Ball, and into Z gives you a much better perspective of how Kikuchi fits into the formula. Not only that, it's just more professional sounding, and you appreciate the music more when there's silence to accompany it. Someone once told me that the most important part of writing a script was the white lines between text breaks, and I think that's true for soundtracks as well.

I like a lot of the Faulconer stuff (partially nostalgia, partially legitimate), but a lot of it is also repetitive and in general it wasn't very well-used in the show's context, ignoring the fact that they should have never replaced the OST in the first place.

As far as the Kai stuff goes, I still really like it, music scandal or otherwise, even if it's on the bland side (the Kikuchi's wuxia-inspired music really gives the show its flavor). The best parts were the insert songs which the original show sorely lacked, in my opinion. Honestly, the biggest bummer of the music scandal for me is I lack the interest in owning Kai on home video because of how inconsistent it is now; little stuff like that bothers me far more than it should.

Neither of those were composed by Kikuchi, though.

In an overall I enjoy all Dragon Ball video game soundtracks, the only music that I've never liked much was Dragon Ball Kai: Replacement Music Edition which uses very few BGMs of Kikuchi and that's what made it awful for me. I couldn't stand hearing the same BGMs over and over again.

I'd have preferred UT's or BT2's score for Kai than what they went with.

From a different franchise, at first I used to hate Sonic 4's music but then I got used to it and now love to hear it.

As a kid, I liked Faulconer's music. Now, I think a lot of it doesn't work well with Dragon Ball, or at least how it's used in the dub. I still like a few of his tracks, like the SSJ3 Goku theme. That one's pretty cool.

The Japanese GT score. It grew on me over time. Also I used to dislike the Ocean Megaman music. Now I hate it.

Lmao. Agreed. It makes DBZ sound like some 4kids garbage with that soundtrack, and the lame added sfx. But that's an argument for another time.

Being competitive with Mike made me under-appreciate some of his pieces initially....and maybe some because I heard so much new stuff constantly. All of it wasn't equal.

In particular I was underwhelmed with Gohan Angers and Vegeta's SSJ themes at first. I think seeing the fan reactions to those helped change my mind years later. Vegeta's SSJ theme did grow on me some at the studio. I liked the odd time he used, and I heard it a lot since it became a major theme. Gohan Angers was closer to the time I left, and I knew of it but hadn't listened to it a lot. Ben Kasparek was doing a lot of editing at that point in time, and you can thank him for most of the reuses. In 2008 or so when I was doing the Z Music album I got a ton of requests for remakes of Gohan Angers, so "Way of the Mystic" is my take on it...and it's been one of my most successful tracks! Vegeta's SSJ theme is now one of my favs. Great writing.

The SSJ3 theme has grown on me some as well. I thought it was a bit cheesy when I first heard it...and kinda still do, but I know how popular it is and can see why. It helps to know that Julius was behind it :)

I didn't care for Solid State Scouter at first. I like it a lot now.
