It personally baffles me that anyone wouldn't spend $400 on a 42" or $500 on a 50" plasma if they currently don't have an HDTV. Plasma's are awesome and dirt cheap compared to LCD's. I hear Target is gonna have some really cheap Element (no name) Plasma's come Black Friday for around $300. My first tv was an Element branded one bought six years ago @ Circuit City and it's still going strong at my parents house today.

I dunno, how about when the cheapest option for an HD TV is $900 NZD (750 USD) and just keeps going up and up and up in price.

All of the people who keep on exclaiming "HDTV and Blu-Rays are so cheap! Why won't you buy them?! GRR!" obviously have no idea what kind of circumstances a lot of people are in when it comes to home media and their personal finances.

Yeah I'm trying to pay off student loans and all that jazz. Unless you're suggesting I put a whole new living room on my credit card and just worry about the payments later? That'll probably work out.

He's talking about items like this--

www.amazon.com (40 inch TV) currently at $377.99 at the time of this post (or 453.61 NZD at today's exchange rates)

True, most people don't know personal info regarding someone else's finances, but the claims are true that prices on these items have been dropping steadily over the past few years. If prices keep going up and up and up where you are you, I think I'll just buy them here and sell them over there.

I myself got a 42 inch LCD Westinghouse for only 300 bucks near the end of April. I'm not sure if any sales happen around then but that sounds like quite a deal to me.

The other thing just comes down to interest and family; there's no blu-ray player in my parent's household because we don't buy enough home releases to begin with to even begin contemplating the upgrade, not because of a lack of disposable income. It's simply not necessary for the entertainment needs of the home (and it's got nothing to do with Netflix, we just don't watch much TV :!: ). If a teen or young adult is stuck in that situation, they might feel they have to defend a situation basically beyond their financial or personal control. I don't know how big on the pie chart of possibilities that reason is going to be, but it's definitely true somewhere.

In fact, if you want to quickly create a popular image, simply over saturate the colors and increase the contrast. While you may not achieve a sophisticated image, you will achieve an image that will please a less demanding audience." - Alain Briot

That's less than two months after season 1, so maybe we can expect season 9 within 18 months

All that people have been saying is that the argument of DVD and SD being enough and that HD and Bluray aren't worth it, is no argument at all nowadays.

Sure, you may, personally, not have enough room in your finances to make the upgrade easily, but its doesn't change the fact that, nowadays, HD and Blurays have the same price that standard TV and DVDs had a while back and are, objectively, cheap.

So. saying that yeah, they are affordable now and that the upgrade is nice but you don't have that much money and that have other priorities for your money right now, is perfectly fine. Trying to argue that they are expensive or not worth it or whatever, is less understandable, however.

Plasmas consume much more electricity. And where I live I don't see that much difference in price between them.

Um... because I generally have to spend that money every month on rent... and food... and hospital bills.

Actually, I did used to have an HDTV and Blu-ray player set-up. The TV was a gift from my now ex-girlfriend's mother. When she moved out, she took the TV. We went in together on a Blu-ray player, which she also took with her, promising to pay me back for my half. That never happened...

Probably the reason I wouldn't spend that much on a TV is that I pay that much in rent alone, every month.

The simple fact, especially in this economy, is that spending that much to upgrade so much just isn't worth it to most people (I did upgrade back in better times). If you have that much in disposable cash, great, enjoy it because most people can't.

If most people couldn't, HDTVs wouldn't be the norm in the stores right now (depending on the country we are talking about).

Blu-Rays are cheap now. You can find a whole bin of them less for $5.

I'm not entirely sure how this discussion got so involved, but is it really ridiculous that a television, of any kind, would be expensive? TVs tend to last reasonably long.

Because...if I had that kind of cash, I'd probably be getting a 2DS and Pokemon X instead. Or a PS3 finally. Or a million other things that I don't have at all, instead of upgrading my TV (which is still working) just so it's all "HD and awesome and jazz, yaaaaayyyy!". Seriously, you need to realize that not everyone has this kind of cash to blow on things, no matter how 'cheap' it is comparatively.

You'll need to update that TV if you get a PS3. The visuals are really really blurry on a standard definition TV and it's hard to play anything.

Honestly, though, most people that come into my electronics store already have an HDTV. So, I really don't think that convincing a few people on here who don't is going to change much. Especially if it's all for the release of something most of us here aren't going to buy.
