Dragon Ball Z "Seasons" On Blu-ray: News & Discussion
Re: Dragon Ball Z "Season One" Coming To Blu-Ray (Updated 11
ALL Positive reviews here, as far as price and quality, I think it looks new. I'm tired of seeing the same dull lifeless VHS/DVD copies of DBZ and I Own the first two Dragonboxes.. gotta say the colors are off, I don't believe Goku and Vegeta's skin are supposed to look Pinkish... The Level sets were the Definitive in my opinion though.

This release is about as far removed as you can get from the Level sets.
"Those transformations insane,
They wanna turn up hours late and steal the show from the pros who had to die for the name." - Yamcha (DBWTF: Z-Rap 3)
"Over saturation is easy. Just drag the slider to the right and there you are: instant interest. And certainly, the majority of the public likes saturated color images. In fact, if you want to quickly create a popular image, simply over saturate the colors and increase the contrast. While you may not achieve a sophisticated image, you will achieve an image that will please a less demanding audience." - Alain Briot

I was just watching the level sets and forgot how good they looked. I hope they go back to that quality at somepoint.KingofWisdom wrote:This release is about as far removed as you can get from the Level sets.

If you could sum this release in 5 words or less it would be "Orange Bricks 2.0".

Anything is possible with enough faith, I suppose. Dragon Ball's already come back for a full length movie with Toriyama involved and for the Kai Buu saga. Why not?eledoremassis02 wrote:I was just watching the level sets and forgot how good they looked. The colors of the DBoxes are indeed a bit dull, a result of them not even trying to do any color-correction on them despite working with film-prints that had been kept in cold storage for like ten years at the time. And yes, the Levels do seem to be the best-looking release this show has ever had, though the OCD nitpicky purist in me really hates the fact that they don't have the Japanese title-cards or credits... That said, since the Levels were cancelled, I'd say the Dragon Boxes are easily the best complete release this show has ever had.over9000 wrote:ALL Positive reviews here, as far as price and quality, I think it looks new. Let these sell dammit, then maybe FUNi can work on better projects. We can only hope it's a superior release of Dragon Ball...

I have to be a "reality stickler" and point out that the Dragon Boxes aren't realistically available anymore. So the defacto definitive version (in North America, at least) is still the Remastered Season Sets. Woot.
A YouTube channel with no AMVs on it? I know, it's hard to believe.

If the goal is to pool together enough money to go for an extensive frame by frame remaster or more Dragon Boxes, I don't see why they couldn't have just kept relying on the orange brick sales. If the bricks aren't selling enough to make a release like that happen, then the Blu-Rays aren't going to be much help (regardless of the opinions floating around). Besides, I don't know how comfortable I am with the idea that FUNimation needs to con enough people into buying trashy releases before they can put out something of quality. As someone who bought the orange bricks, it makes me feel like I've been taken advantage of, and I sure as hell wouldn't wish that upon anyone.dprez wrote:Let these sell dammit, then maybe FUNi can work on better projects. I'd love to know exactly which batch of episodes Funi actually had trouble with and what that trouble actually was.

These things look awful, but I'll still most likely pick up the season 2 set (if they are going by the same episode count as the OBs), until I can one day buy Dragon Box 2.
Re: Dragon Ball Z "Season One" Coming To Blu-Ray (Updated 11
I'd probably get the complete Blu-ray set because I'd like a Blu-ray HD collection but if they bring back quality of the level sets I would get those to get the classic original gain ("grain?"...? "gain back"...?) 4:3 with dub music.KentalSSJ6 wrote:If you could sum this release in 5 words or less it would be "Orange Bricks 2.0".
One thing that stops me from getting the Dragon Boxes is the lack of (a) dub music audio track and (the) price of them.
I could also go with or w/o the grain as I find with grain the quality viewing suffers for it. So it's only 4:3 (no crop) and dub music I care about.

Can someone please explain to me why some users highlight random letters in red in a few posts I've seen? Is it an inside joke or something>pcwizard7 wrote:I'd probably get the complete Blu-ray set because I'd like a Blu-ray HD collection but if they bring back quality of the level sets I would get those to get the classic original gain ("grain?"...? The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

Kanzenshuu Forum Rules wrote:Rule #2: Grammar
This is an extensive community. You want people to understand what you are saying, and you likely want to be taken seriously. Be sure to use proper sentence structure when you write, along with punctuation and spacing where appropriate. Outlandish disregard for typing properly is subject to being corrected in red by moderators. This is intended to give people a little “heads-up” that they agreed to these rules and are expected to type properly. Not every little mistake will be corrected (especially those from our foreign, non-native-English-speaking visitors), but if you find yourself subject to these corrections, it may be time to re-evaluate your posting style.

To be fair, I don't mind if color correction is made, but cutting these chunks from the screen...
Now imagine if they removed grain and color-corrected the episodes basing themselves on the broadcast recordings. Now that would be awesome.

Nah, I would want the color correction. I can remember the scene in ep 5 with Vegeta and Nappa where they're wearing green amour and Vegeta has red hair. I hated seeing mistakes in the film which is why I got the American OB instead of the Australian ones. MadMan miss them up (huh?) when recording their copy of the show.

If you're aware that your grammar is poor, and you're aware that you're typing faster than your brain is catching up to what you're writing, there's nothing stopping you from previewing your post before making it. There is no time limit where you have to get your post in. Please review them before clicking "submit". The moderation team cannot and will not continue correcting posts like that.
There's a difference between color correction and what happened with Vegeta and Nappa color schemes in DBZ episode 5. That wasn't a "mistake"; that was a stab in the dark by the animation team at what their colors would be before they appeared in color in the manga and were given official anime color style guides. Yes, Kai "corrected" that scene, but that's still not color correction. When people talk about color correction, they're typically talking about things like a sky that borders on green being fixed to blue, or skin color that's "too pink" being adjusted to something more natural.
Buying the orange bricks in one country isn't going to get you any color correction benefit over some other country's release. Madman in Australia and Manga UK both sub-licensed those materials directly from FUNimation. All they did was do a PAL->NTSC conversion where appropriate. Nothing about that affects any color on any scene or the DVNR performed to the footage.

A "Dragonball Kai" would be nice. Give it a good redub, cut out the filler and all. Id buy it and would be the first time Id own something from the first Dragonball series.dprez wrote:Let these sell dammit, then maybe FUNi can work on better projects.
