DB Manga Colors

Post by DaemonCorps » Mon Jun 26, 2006 1:10 pm

No, my question's not about why some of the manga chapters are in deeper shades of black and white. I'm actually asking about some of those insert pictures put between some of the earlier chapters of DB. Just to jog some of your guys' memories, these are those little gag pictures like Roshi staring at a girl in a bikini while he's supposed to be playing baseball (apparently with a dragonball) and Roshi sipping some tea next to a little message that says "BREAK TIME!". Viz put a little side note near the picture, saying that there was probably an advertisement where this image was put.

Now's here's my real question: were these images ever printed in color? It's kinda safe to assume that these pics were in color originally since they look gray-scaled. My question could also apply to the "Opening Cover" image page that comes right before the list of main characters, since those look gray-scaled, too.

Now, I know that the little pictures Toriyama puts up on the "About the Author" page were originally released in color, since they were printed on the manga sleeve of the tankoubons.

My guess is that these gray-scaled images were put up in Daizenshuu 1 in color, or something, but as always, I'd like someone to confirm this before I go off on these wild tangents :roll:.

Someone who's got the first kanzenban volume could probably help you. I have some kanzenbans with those little chapter images but the volumes I have--most of which are near the end of the manga--feature that type of artwork in grayscale as well.

I might've misunderstood what you said though. ^_^;
On hiatus.

I have all of the Kanzenban, and I'm afraid the Kanzenban don't include the "extra insert" images, or Toriyama Q&A, or any real extras for that matter. I was REALLY upset when I found this out.

I also have Daizenshu 1... and I don't *think* it includes the extra images from the tankoubon... hang on, lemme check.

...Well, it includes a *few*, but I can't seem to find all of them. Where's Oolong kicking the DragonBall thinking it's a soccer ball?
BGM forever! If only more people paid attention to it... well, I intend to change that.

They DO include the chapter title pages however. Here is one in color from volume 18.
