Viz's DB Volume 16

In the Viz release of DB Volume 16, on page 204, you see Goku with an empty speech bubble! For those with the JP edition, do you know if he said anything else other than what was already put in the Viz version?

I'm guessing that Viz took their translation ("Me... be a god?") and put that all in Goku's first speech bubble and just forgot about that second speech bubble.

Um... Volume 16 doesn't have a page 204.

Oh yeah

... because of that whole Viz transferring the rest of the Piccolo fight from vol. 17 to vol. 16. So, I guess if someone were to check up the JP version, it would be in tankoubon 17. It's right when Kami's talking about giving his job to Goku on one of the upper right corners of one of the right pages (I wouldn't know the page njumber, but I know that Viz keeps the positioning of the pages the same).

You must just have a copy that has a misprint in it man. My volume 16 (Original edition with Viz Logo, not the reprint with the Viz Media Logo) Has the following on Page 204:

Starting in the top right panel:

Kami: "My dear Son Goku...Won't you take my place? The two of you will be very happy in heaven as God and Goddess."

Son: "Me...be a God?!"

Panel 2 (Goku and Chi-chi standing together, Goku responding in all word balloons)>

Goku balloon top right> "Y-You've got to be kidding!!"

Goku balloon top left> "That place was boring enough for a little while. It'd kill me if I tried to live there!!"

Goku balloon bottom left> "Forget it!!"

Must just be your copy man. Aside from there being a Viz initial print version and Viz Media reprint versions, I believe there were two different printings of the original Viz edition. One of them had an incorrect spine picture. Mine has just the tail end of the motorbike Bulma is riding and part of the smoke trail from the nimbus on it.

I think there were some error copies out there that had the picture from DB Volume 17/DBZ volume 1 on it. The picture with part of Piccolo's head and Yajerobi's foot on it. I am fairly certain I remember seeing one like that when I bought my copy of volume 16. I passed it up because I didn't want my combined spine images to have a two headed Piccolo!!

Perhaps this is a difference in some way related to one of the various versions of Volume 16 that exist? Let me know what you uncover.

Well, think about it. After being deprived from the last volume of DB for two whole months (remember, Viz released the volumes bi-monthly), I didn't really give a darn about whether it was the right spine image or not, as long as the rest of the volume was alright. Just to make the spine image complete, I tracked down the volume 16 spine image on the 'net and taped it on top of the incorrect Piccolo one.

After going over your little transcript with mine, there's nothing really wrong with mine at all... except that there's that lone empty bubble

! Just to clarify things, the error is in the panel where it has this:

Kami: "My dear Son Goku...Won't you take my place? The two of you will be very happy in heaven as God and Goddess."

Son: (Note, that Goku has two speech bubbles)
(speech bubble 1) "Me...be a God?!"
(speech bubble 2 is empty)

Well, from your Viz edition, it looks like everything is good. But just as a side thing, Viz is actually kinda sloppy when it comes to having someone re-check their translation. Not that in Volume 15, Viz switched Yamcha and Chi-chi's dialogue during Goku and Tenshinhan's fight (Chi-chi agrees with Kuririn's comment on the fight instead of Yamcha). There's also some grammar errors here and there (EX: "that" instead of "the"), but nothing that really takes away from your reading.

EDIT: I was at the book store the other day and found the "newer" version of Vol. 16 with the corrected spine, and (drum roll)... the speech bubble is still empty! Could you just double check your edition, Akira, for that empty bubble in the aforementioned panel?

In the Japanese tankoubon, here's the dialogue:

Kami: "Son yo, onushi watashi ni kawatte kami ni natte kurenu ka... sono shikaku wa juubun ni aru futari de tenkai ni sumu ga ii..."

Goku: [speech bubble 1] "E!?"
[speech bubble 2] "ORA ga kami ni!?"

Goku's "E!?", in case you didn't know, is the equivalent of "Huh!?"
It looks like the "E!?" got replaced with "Me... be a God?!" (which is actually the translation of speech bubble 2's dialogue)

So, this means that the missing dialogue is just a simple "Huh!?"

All of my curiousity at its peak when all that was missing was a simple 'huh?'. To be honest, I was kinda hoping for some kind of super f-up on Viz's behalf, but I guess I can live with them missing a 'huh'.

Yeah, mine has all the speech bubbles in it.

No idea why mine is right and your is empty. Sorry.

Edit: Here is a picture I took of the page. Be warned! It is VERY blurry. But you can see that the speech bubble is indeed filled. No idea why the picture came out like this.

I had lent out my volume at the time you posted this...but I finally got it back so I was able to check.

If you're talking about the bubble in the bottom left of the frame in which Kami makes his offer...then I'm missing it too! My volume also has the incorrect spine image!

So yeah, it wasn't just you. In fact, it wasn't just us. Tyro is missing it too, he just completely mis-understood where it was, but in the scan you can actually see it. It kind've goes over Goku's body and it small, so it's not that easy to notice.

I bet all of the first editions of the volume are like this.

OMG!!! I was in the wrong box the entire time and didn't even notice! Now, I have to know how Viz missed a whole speech bubble...!

Dang Duo... That brought me down.

Edit: And I have the "Bulma's motorcycle ending" spine image. Is that not the right image?

Edit 2: I'm tempted the right, "Huh!?" into that empty bubble with a pencil.

Some copies of Volume 16 have Piccolo's head and Yajirobe's leg, which is incorrect. The one you have is correct.

So, you guys had the incorrect spine image and the empty speech bubble. But, I got the later volume where they go back and put the rest of the Piccolo fight in the volume and they fix the image on the side, but it is still wrong? I don't see how they missed it.

Also, all the manga with the VIZ symbol on the side are the origional ones, right? And the new ones have the Viz media sybol on the side?

Because I only have one Viz media volume in my DB collection (Vol. 10) and want to know if the origional had anything wrong with it, or something of that sort.

The one with the mistake and Piccolo spine is the old Viz logo. I have that one, but was too cheap to buy a corrected copy. COuldn't tell you about vol. 10 since it's the old version before the Jump line with the bigger print.

With Viz and mistakes, I know a few Kenshin volumes have a typo or two. Even still I hear people say it's the best translation of Kenshin even better than ADV and Media Blasters'.
