What PL to successfully doubleteam a stronger opponent.
What PL to successfully doubleteam a stronger opponent.
It shows up a bunch in DBZ media when the heroes or the villains will gang up on their foe. Sometimes it works, usually for the villains. Other times it fails, usually for the heroes. If 2-8 characters were to say, gang up on Freeza and/or Cell, and they are nowhere near equal to themat what power level would the multiple fighters need to be at to win?

This is actually a really interesting topic, because it seems like x + y = z is not really how it works, as in two SSJs vs. a SSJ2 (all other things being equal) would likely not end in a stalemate.

True. I remember this coming up while I was byond. Hell even on Byond DB games(Dragon Universe) if two people(With equal stats) with a BP of 70,000,000 double team someone(With the same stats) with a battle power of someone with 90,000,000 the 90,000,000 would kick both of the asses. Now back onto the series. I think it's honestly almost impossible. As I think the fighting works differently than what we think. Since the fighter is stronger it doesn't matter if he gets ganged up as he can see ALL attacks coming and can react faster enough.Cursed Lemon wrote:This is actually a really interesting topic, because it seems like x + y = z is not really how it works, as in two SSJs vs. a SSJ2 (all other things being equal) would likely not end in a stalemate.
Have this ever happen in the series where double teaming(Or more) actually worked?

Yeah..........Goku and Piccolo Vs Raditz. xDTheGmGoken wrote:

No....no...no. Goku and Piccolo was getting destroyed. Gohan interference was the reason Goku got the full nelson. DURING the battle have double teaming(Or more) ever work?Strife1 wrote:Yeah..........Goku and Piccolo Vs Raditz. xDTheGmGoken wrote:

Re: What PL to successfully doubleteam a stronger opponent.
Oozaru Goku was beaten by Yamcha & Puar.
Captain Ginyu was beaten by indirect teamwork of Goku and Vegeta.
Cell was beaten by Goku and Gohan if you actually count Goku's spirit being there.

The teamwork would have worked if Goku didn't fuck up and let go of Raditz tail.TheGmGoken wrote: No....no...no. Goku and Piccolo was getting destroyed. Gohan interference was the reason Goku got the full nelson. DURING the battle have double teaming(Or more) ever work?

Teaming up happens a lot in the movies. This is one of the things I really like about them; there are effective ways to beat an opponent other than having a higher power level than them.TheGmGoken wrote:No....no...no. Dodoria's squad was able to at least give Bardock trouble with teamwork. He took some hits and had to actually think tactically to take them down.
Garlic Jr's men combine their energy waves into a single powerful blast and hit Piccolo by surprise, taking him out. Later in the movie, Piccolo and Goku take out Garlic Jr together after getting beaten around trying to attack him alone.
Tuellece's men actually force Goku to use kaio-ken, because he was having a hard time with them in his base form.
Slug's generic troopers take down Gohan by pelting him with beams, all at the same time, when they outnumbered him significantly.
In Movie 6, the Cyclopian Guard robots are able to take down Krillin and Gohan, despite being weaker, by just overwhelming them. Later in the movie, Goku and Vegeta, after getting absolutely stomped by Metal Cooler, are able to take him out with a combined attack.
In Movie 9, Bojack's men used teamwork very effectively to take down the heroes. Splitting them up and ganging up on them, using special paralyzation techniques, attacking them while their guards are down fighting someone else. Good stuff. They're probably my favorite movie henchmen for this reason.
There are other examples too, but these are the big ones. I wish this happened more in the actual series. On topic, of you're asking what gaps I think are required to win... well, Ginyu said that someone with a power level of 60,000 would be able to effortlessly dispatch the entire Ginyu Force, bar the Cap'n himself of course. The Ginyu Force members are pretty good fighters proportional to their power levels, so that should indicate that, barring some special technique, the gap between Goku's 60,000 and whatever the Ginyus were at should generally be too much to overcome by just ganging up on someone normally. Most peg the Ginyus at about 40,000 each (I peg most of them a bit lower), so that'd mean a x1.5 gap between them and what Ginyu thought Goku was at.

Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

Cell was weakened by Vegeta's blast during the kamehameha struggle with Gohan. That would count.

Re: What PL to successfully doubleteam a stronger opponent.
This is just one more thing that I'd say doesn't have a set and predictable ratio that can be applied. We've seen a couple of instances where a team of characters who are half as strong as their opponent or even less at least suspect they'll have a chance if they team up. Like Goku and Piccolo Vs Raditz, or Vegeta, Gohan, and Kuririn Vs Freeza, and so forth. Teamwork probably is a huge benefit, but almost certainly for more and better reasons than just "X amount of people with at least Y power versus single opponent with Z power."

Re: What PL to successfully doubleteam a stronger opponent.
Freeza told Dodoria and Zarbon that if they fought together they could still beat Vegeta. The Daizenshuu says Dodoria is 22,000 and Zarbon is about 23,000.
Ginyu estimated Goku's battle power to be 60,000 from what he heard from Jheese. If the Ginyu Force are about 45,000 then the difference would be 1.3x and you could say the difference must be smaller for 2 vs. 1 to win.

It probably depends a lot on the skill/techniques/tactical situation of each side.

Re: What PL to successfully doubleteam a stronger opponent.
I usually have a fighter that is 17-25% stronger than their opponent as being able to effectively defeat them with no trouble.
I think if both people trying to team up are within 10% of the opponent they have a good chance of winning.
So basically.
Z = 10
X = 9
Y = 9
9 and 9 is stronger than or equal to 10
If the gap is only 5% or less than they will definitely win unless the plot demands it.
9.5 and 9.5 > 10
A formula to use could look something like (X and Y) >= Z, if (X + Y) >= 1.8Z

I really liked Bojack's henchmen. They were pretty shite on their own, one of them gets owned by SSJ Trunks 1v1 I believe but you see the three or four of them effectively gang up on SSJ Gohan

Yeah probably this. Everyone should just learn taiyoken and kienzan and all use them together! They would win every time.Polyphase Avatron wrote:It probably depends a lot on the skill/techniques/tactical situation of each side.

Re: What PL to successfully doubleteam a stronger opponent.
The series also seems to imply that, if two fighters are similar, additional help can decisively turn the scales, even if the helper is less than half the strength of whoever they're fighting. Ginyu and Jeice vs Goku is an example; King Cold and Mecha Freeza vs SS Namek Goku and Vegeta, Gohan, and Krillin vs Freeza are put out as hypothetical examples.
