Are you referring to DB or Ranma here? The Ranma box sets were initially released an insane dollar per episode price point. They released box sets years later that were reasonable, but the video authoring/mastering/whatever-ing was garbage. The video had mixed fields and you're not able to reconstruct a progressive frame in ANY reasonable fashion (screens shots are needed to really explain). I don't know if that's just was Viz had or not, but the orange bricks put those to shame (except for the fact they actively edited the picture instead of just slapping the video on a DVD, if that makes sense - the Orange Bricks were at least encoded properly, etc...).MarcFBR wrote:Hopefully Viz finishes them, as their percentage complete on anime releases isn't exactly great (Even including cancelled DBZ releases you can count stuff Funi has cancelled on one hand, out of hundreds of shows, Viz releases far less, and finishes releasing very little.)ect5150 wrote:Yeah, I basically keep up with two series. The later boxes were the same as the original boxes (with thinner packaging.)ect5150 wrote:Are you referring to DB or Ranma here? The second part was in response to Hellspawn commenting that he wished Viz had the rights to the DB anime.
The disks were crap, and after getting their money they dumped it wholesale and are getitng it back now because their parent company has shiny new masters.
As for my response to yours, I'm referring to Viz and their history of dumping anime releases VERY fast if they don't do great numbers, even if they are profitable. Ranma has been one of Viz's more signature products throughout their history, so there is a better chance of it holding on, but Viz really has a bad record of actually finishing their stuff, and finishing it properly (one of my personal favorites is Buso Renkin.... the last scene in the Viz release of the anime has NO translation on their release of it.)

Ack... when I said more reasonable, I meant a more reasonable price point. Weren't the original Ranma Season Sets something like $130 a piece? The thin packs were much cheaper. I remember picking some up very cheap.MarcFBR wrote:The later boxes were the same as the original boxes (with thinner packaging.)
The Ranma BluRays seem like it might be at a reasonable price point ($55 for the first box set, so I'm assuming some kind of pre-order discount... we'll see)

I was purely talking about the quality of the old Ranma disks (the video quality itself was never going to be great based on what existed masterwise even in Japan, but Viz's disks just weren't great disks overall.)ect5150 wrote: Ack... when I said more reasonable, I meant a more reasonable price point. Re: Dragon Ball Z "Seasons" Coming To Blu-ray (Updated 12/04
I'm glad I'm not the only one that bothered. It's easy enough to follow if one has read the manga, but they really shouldn't assume that someone has read that.MarcFBR wrote:Ranma has been one of Viz's more signature products throughout their history, so there is a better chance of it holding on, but Viz really has a bad record of actually finishing their stuff, and finishing it properly (one of my personal favorites is Buso Renkin.... the last scene in the Viz release of the anime has NO translation on their release of it.)
And then there's one of my own personal favorites, I"s. Viz finally got that, gave it a stilted dub using almost verbatim-from-the-Japanese scripts, slapped it onto discs (some of which had some printing errors, with one OVA being listed as being on that disc when it's really on the other), and called it a day. No trailer to advertise the series to the people that don't know what it is (and that would be the majority), not even any trailers on the DVD itself to help shell out their other stuff. Hell, there's not even music on the menus.
Now, I realize I"s has less in common with DBZ than Ranma does, especially in the type of releases we're talking about - but my point is that just because Viz is seemingly doing right by Ranma at long last, there's no guarantee that they would do the same for DBZ or wouldn't have done the same kinds of things to it that FUNi has done over the years.

Monster was also entirely dubbed, aired, and released digitally (dub only, now unavailable), but Viz never released more than one DVD volume for some reason. Then they dropped the license all together. One of the actresses I met at an anime con was under the impression that it wasn't doing badly either. I just wish FUNimation would give Dragon Ball Z the same style of release as their other titles.

I am very surprised they didn't decided to bring the DBox Movies (or DB Box and GT Box). I thought the original announcement claimed they had the movies as well. Given how the others sold, they must know there is demand for them given how the prices of all but a few of the boxes are going sky high now. I was betting on them releasing the Movies Box next, but I was wrong there.KentalSSJ6 wrote:... Its clear that they want the rest of the Dragon Boxes.

I don't know how FUNimation thought the guy dropping milk to the Blu-ray case, eating like crazy and lastly turning the TV on in such a hurry was good advertisement for Dragon Ball Z: Season 1 Blu-ray.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNPsZ2_zvpk
I'd thought the second trailer would've had them saying "This is the definitive Dragon Ball Z release that you must own" which they've said countless times before.

The whole idea behind the ad seems to be to hit on those warm squishy feelings of nostalgia of people watching Saturday morning cartoons. That's what most people equate DBZ too, not "anime" but that fun show they watched when they were kids.dbboxkaifan wrote:I don't know how FUNimation thought the guy dropping milk to the Blu-ray case, eating like crazy and lastly turning the TV on in such a hurry was good advertisement for Dragon Ball Z: Season 1 Blu-ray.

Yea, they were totally going for a nostalgia thing here, but, I think it fell flat. This is the right way to use nostalgia in a Dragon Ball commercial -AgitoZ wrote:The whole idea behind the ad seems to be to hit on those warm squishy feelings of nostalgia of people watching Saturday morning cartoons. Screens taken from the DBZ Season 1 Blu-ray Trailer #2.

Well, honestly the cropping looks to done properly (that Nappa shot looks rather odd) and the colours are pretty good too, I'd dare to say they're better than on the Dragon Boxes Z.

Might be my eyes but did I just see detail lost?
Re: Dragon Ball Z "Seasons" Coming To Blu-ray (Updated 12/04
Honestly, I'm fond of the colors in that Nappa shot. But... why is Roshi drinking outdoors anyway?
Re: Dragon Ball Z "Seasons" Coming To Blu-ray (Updated 12/04
The choices of footage in the trailer are really strange. There's multiple shots of Roshi drinking beer, and we have other oddities like Chaozu launching himself towards Nappa and Gohan goofing off with the orphans. I'd think if you were advertising DRAAAAAAGON BAAAAAAALL ZEE, you would focus more on, well, fight scenes.
