Freeza Saga dub question

Post by Brendo » Fri Jun 30, 2006 11:35 am

During the Freeza Saga when Gohan and Kuririn (Well i think it was those two) were coming up with some ideas on what they were going to make their third wish with the Dragon Balls, they were taking a lot time to make their decision and off memory Dende says something like "Hurry up cause you're pissing off the God of Love!" I was really shocked because i rarely hear that kind of stuff come from cartoons, especially because i would of been about 10 at the time.
And the other day while listening to the podcast, i heard Mike say the same quote. So my question is did he actually say that and what dub group did the recording. I would also be extra pleased if someone could either post the video clip of it or post a sound clip. Thanks in advance.

Edit: Oh and also, was this said in the original Japanese version?

In the Japanese version he told them to hurry up before Vegeta or Frieza showed up. It was about the same in the manga.

It is the one dub swearword in the entire Freeza arc. I remember hearing him say it on television way back when it first aired, and I thought I must have misheard what he said. Watching the DVD though confirmed that is indeed what Dende said.

I believe the actual line was "Don't piss off the god of love."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just for reference, because it really bothers me for some reason:

In your sentence you said "I would of been 10 years old"

It is "I would have been ten years old" or "I would've been ten years old."

Would've, not would of. Not really my place to correct the english usage of others, but this misuse in particular really bothers me. Not annoyed that you personally did it, but just the use of "Would of" instead of "would've" by anyone.

Yes, and it was dubbed by Funimation's in house cast.

There was another one, in the uncut dub of "The Last Wish" in the Freeza saga when Vegeta is back alive & walking around. He says "Am I alive... or is this Hell?"

In the Toonami dub, they changed that line to "Am I alive... or maybe I'm dreaming?"

Um.... yeah.

When he flies away from the battle between Goku & Ginyu.

The Toonami version changed it to "I'm a total genius." Don't know why, I hear "sucks" and "hot" on kid's shows on CN anyway.

And I remember various instances of "butt" being changed to "tail" for the Toonami edited dub.

O_o;

Friggen is basically an alternative for the word "fucking."

As for the butt thing, they played around with it, using words such as keester, can, tail, rear and so forth. o_O;; This was when FUNi was being REALLY anal about what not to edit and what to edit.

"The God of Love"? What the...you know, it's the FUNi dub so nevermind. Is anyone else hung up over that like I am? And yeah, I never thought of Dende saying "piss" as a big deal cause when I heard it, it didn't even phase me (I was 11-12 when it was said). I have heard (and said) much worse words then "piss" so It never grabbed my attention. Now that I think about it, I am surprised that Toonami never edited that out. They must have been hung up over that "God of Love" line like I was

Was that on purpose? :D

CN had different standards back then. The Ginyu stuff was atleast 5 years ago.

But anyways... wow... thats almost annoyingly random. The whole line is just... WHAT? FUNi must've not gotten the memo about not being allowed to mention God and swear words on children's televison.

Thanks for the answers guys, i just thought it was a really weird to say. I have no idea how FUNi got that line out off "Hurry up cause Vegita and Freeza are coming."
Maybe it was an inside joke by the FUNi voice actors. Does anyone know what episode this is said in?

XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

Not sure if you did that on purpose but....

XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

*ehem* Anyway, it wasn't FUNi deciding what stayed and what went for the edited dub at the time. It was Saban that made those decisions.

We're talking about the in-house dub by Funimation after they split up from Saban. Saban had no say in how the in-house Funi dub was to be done, it was all Funi's decisions. And bad ones at that....

Dammit, I wasn't trying to go for a pun there. XD

English episode title the dialogue comes up in "Piccolo's Return," I believe.

Yes it was the episode, "Piccolos Return" and let me add that watching the Frieza dub is very painful because it was the most abysmally dubbed saga by them ever. Sure the dialogs are fine but the delivery is really pathetic.

Oops, my bad. I keep forgetting when/where Season 2 ended and 3 started.

Well, that's because they were only just getting into the roles. That, and they were trying to imitate the Ocean cast. I'm kind of hoping that, if these Series Sets run the course of the show, that they'll redub the third season for them. >.>

Ugh...well I hope such a strange dubbing mistake is corrected in the so-called "Ultimate Uncut" version. I remember hearing that on TV but I thought I was just half asleep and hearing things! That makes no sense!? "God of love!?" I think he meant the "God of Dreams" which is what Porunga is refferred to in anime dub anyway.

That's true. I was rewatching that very ep a little bit ago, and Mr. Sabat's Yamcha sounded like a bad surfer-version of Kuwabara. He sounds nothing like him now or in DB where he improved greatly.
