I think so too. It's a shame that kind of care wasn't put into the 4 way shot (where they should have reframed each shot digitally) and the oddly cropped ending.
Big Momma wrote:And that ending is...wow. To be honest, cropping doesn't necessarily bother me too much...but that's just ridiculous. How did anyone from FUNimation look at the final version of the ED and say "This works."?
Don't EVER question FUNimation's SUPER GENIUSES! They are infallible and this was entirely intentional. The extra cropping was sheer brilliance!

Keep in mind, my TV doesn't really have overscan.
While I don't know your exact TV model, the shell looks like a circa 2006/2007 720p Vizio (the silver shell suggests that at the least, 1080p ones had black or bronze shells... probably roughly 37 inches.) Those models do have overscan (while not my personal TV, I watch TV on two nearly identical models on a normal basis.)

The only orange brick with crushed white skin tones was "season two", and even though it was bright all around, it was only ridiculously bright for a few episodes.
The colors on this set are pretty much the same as orange brick 1.
Look at this shot

season 1 Blu ray

In the orange brick shot it's hard to tell where Gohan's eye ends and where his skin starts. In the blu ray shot however the difference between his eye color and skin color is clearly visible.

This is an 80s/90s animated all-ages show that was popular amongst kids. It's not some potent super weapon that might fall into the wrong hands that we have to protect from evil.

The first episode on the orange brick is a bit bright, but after that, outside of 1 or 2 other episodes, the colors are pretty decent, and close to the new set's colors:

Exactly. That's what I do.

Thank you for this impressively detailed review, but they did a really horrible job with the cropping for the ED unfortunately as it looks like.
If you have an account on Amazon.com you should post this so people would be aware of its actual flaws.

Awesome. Thanks so much for this VegettoEX. I'm relieved to read that they're working on future cover arts. while that doesn't prove that these won't get canceled because they made covers for part 3 and 4 of the level sets...Right? or was those fan made?
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

FUNimation made the covers for the Levels 2.1 and 2.2 and the same goes for this, Season 3 and Season 4. They're yet to make prints of S3 & S4, I'm guessing they're working on making mass production of S2.

I honestly feel sorry for FUNi. They definitely want to fight the good fight with these Blu-Rays, but that isn't possible with every type of consumer. You have the casual fans who just want DBZ to look shiny on their TV, then you have the likes of us who want it they way it originally was, and trying to find a middle ground isn't easy. I think they want to instate these BRs as the new 'main release' of DBZ and sweep the Orange Bricks under the rug, as they've clearly learned that outsourcing development to a company that isn't well acquainted with the source material and the audience that goes with it, and ultimately cocks it all up is not a good idea, even though it sold well, by going to such degrees as commissioning new art and improving the audio masters, which I can commend them for.
And thank you for getting this interview to us, VegettoEX.

I don't know what I was expecting. Actually, I don't know why I was expecting anything different from this. The last response was particularly disgusting, considering it makes no sense with examples of proper releases from FUNimation being pointed out in the questions. Basically, the same PR response trying to save face. It's ironic reading that after seeing photos of the closing animation on this set lol. Looking forward to the podcast review and discussion.

I think that guy took a nap during that "framing period" and said yep this works.
I've watched the complete set and it's an upgrade towards the OBs, if they would have just left the brightness/contrast alone this would have been much better! Also, anyone notice the curves on skin shadow looks a little edgy?
Also with crushed blacks, remastering issue probably but didn't the levels, orange bricks, and uue's have crushed blacks even the original pioneer dvds? I think that's more to funimations film master they have, it's already crushed thus they can't fix it. I do prefer the color pallet here vs the skittish dragon box color pallet which wasn't bad it was colorful and gorgeous but it changes too often for my liking... Was there color correction to the dbox's? If no, why not?!?

Reading that Q&A was a horrible experience. Pure PR nonsense that unveiled literally nothing new about their decision making process.
'Oh, we take other things into consideration...'
OKAY SO WHAT THINGS?!
That last paragraph too. Blood boiling rage.
Thanks to Kanzenshuu to throwing the questions at them but goddamn, I can't help but sit here and sigh whilst holding back a giant 'fuck you, Funimation'.

What exactly were you expecting?
It was never going to be anything other than PR answers.

Apparently naively expecting a company willing to take questions from a fansite to actually be up front for once.

Well the thing is, the answers are upfront, but they were never going to not be pseudo-cleaned up PR approved answers.
They were never going to provide insight into their internal processes on how things are done, which seems to be your primary issue.
And from a business points of view, it's hard to argue with the results, watching those BDs near the top of the anime chart on Amazon.

Answers were what I was expecting, but this little bit made me raise an eyebrow:
First off, going with widescreen over standard definition was a must. We understand the concerns with what is lost during the 4:3 to 16:9 conversion
So, they're also playing into the idea that it can't be HD if it isn't 16x9?

Considering they've done plenty of BDs of 4:3 content, I'd expect it was a typo or mistake that no one noticed.

I chuckled at their assertion they had a team go through each frame and scene. I guess, technically, the ending animation is not a scene, but...
This just cemented everything we already knew; FUNimation puts DBZ on this imaginary pedestal and they genuinely believe putting the show out as-is would not be enough. They have to dip their fingers in the pot and make sure, because it's the golden child. I understand why they would think like that, but that doesn't stop it from being simultaneously humorous and sad.

When Joe Dumbass Consumer is subscribing to that idea, you just have to follow his lead if you want to make money.
