Building a better Strength Checker: help needed!
Well, I've put it off for a long, long time, but I guess I finally need to expand the Strength Checker to include anime/movie/guide/etc stuff. After all, with the Kanzenshuu wiki finally about to launch, now's the perfect time to start up a huge, completely unrelated project, right? Or maybe, this will serve as a beta test to see if the Kanzenshuu crowd can work as a team.
Because I need help. I can't do this on my own, God knows.
I need people to go through the anime and note all the strength-related quotes and feats and whatnot that aren't in the manga. And of course that includes all the stuff in the movies/specials/GT. Plus any feats-type stuff that are in the manga but don't involve words and so aren't included in the Strength Checker. Or any manga quotes that still aren't in the Strength Checker (I know there's at least one Vegetto thing I still haven't bothered to add).
And if anyone wants to rummage around the guidebook and interview translations on the forums/site/old Kanzentai site and compile all the interesting/relevant quotes, that would be helpful too. And those things that were on websites, and whatnot.
Like Luffy, I want a crew of 10 or so people, but I'll see what I can get. Each person will be assigned a certain part of the series to go over. My idea is to post this guide up bit by big throughout the rest of the year, putting a different story arc/movie/whatever up on the forum each week starting in February.
In addition to the "just the facts" list of all these quotes, I also want this guide to include an attempt at a comprehensive overview of all the interminable strength debates throughout the fandom. So I'll try to go over all the various points of view, while still coming to a conclusion or two based on all the available facts. Or just throwing up my hands and going "there's no real way to know". Whichever the case may be.
So I'll throw together a preliminary schedule of what I want to do each week. People who volunteer to work on the Strength Checker for episodes x to y or movie z will have until then to get their part done. And they or anyone else who wants can send me their two cents on the strength debates pertaining to that part of the series. Say what they think, what arguments they've seen others make, etc. Then I'll try and make a comprehensive overview. And even after I post up each overview, people can still post their two cents in the thread too of course. The idea is to create an organized central hub for this type of discussion.
I'll try and start in February right at the beginning with the DB hunt story arc, with the Saiyan arc around April, the Boo arc by September, and GT around November/December. Hopefully that will space things out enough to give myself and everyone else time to prepare for the really annoying stuff.
So...thoughts? Volunteers? Anyone want to talk me out of this? There's still time!

As someone who has found your strength checker extraordinarily helpful in the past, I'd be eager to help in any way that I can! If I can. I think I can at least go through the old translations on Kanzentai and pick out strength based things for you. Also, on:
Do you mean stuff like second form Cell being unphased by 16's punch?Plus any feats-type stuff that are in the manga but don't involve words and so aren't included in the Strength Checker.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

I'd be happy to help out in any way possible. I'd love to be part of the team that tackles this project.

Work/life permitting my level of availability I'd like to be involved, I guess doing this kind of thorough scouring type of research appeals to my academic researcher side.
If I'm needed then I'd be glad to help, but if there's someone better for the job then I'm happy to take a step back.

I'm not sure if I will be able to help due to studies, at least until June. But someone else has already done a GT Strength Checker (it's not finished yet, it goes up until episode 59), if that helps.

But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.
Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.
Re: Building a better Strength Checker: help needed!
My present schedule probably won't allow for review of the DB & early Z arcs. If I could be of any service, anywhere in the range of the Artificial Human arc <--> the end of GT, and/or from translations of supplementary material; I'd likely be able to manage in the given time frame.

Yeah, basically. Plus stuff like kid Goku breaking boulders and whatnot.Saiga wrote:Also, on:Do you mean stuff like second form Cell being unphased by 16's punch?Plus any feats-type stuff that are in the manga but don't involve words and so aren't included in the Strength Checker.
I'm still thinking through how to organize everything, but I'm thinking that for each story arc/movie/whatever there'll be three main sections. The first will be "the facts", and have a Checker-style list of all the quotes sorted by category (including a copy of the relevant section from the current Strength Checker), then some sort of "digest/compilation" section that gives an overview of all the important/interesting facts for each character in a paragraph format, with commentary in brackets, similiar to the "BoG: Strength Rundown" I did. That way, people could get a relatively quick overview of all the major facts, without having to read through every instance of anyone saying "what an incredible ki!" or "he's fast!" like in the Strength Checker.
After that would be a section for mini-topics on the long-running debates or anything else I think needs sorting out. Then some kind of analysis section where I try to take everything from the first two sections and make sense of it all. Probably toss around battle power charts/character rankings based on different possible interpretations of the series.

There's also a few movie strength checkers from that same site, but unfortunately I can't speak for their reliability. Here's one for Movies 4-7, Movie 9, Movie 12, Movie 13, and three of the specialsDBZGTKOSDH wrote:I'm not sure if I will be able to help due to studies, at least until June. Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

Interesting request. Since I only have Brazilian anime version I can't help on statements, but I can check all anime feats or similar stuff. I can give Portuguese Translation in another hand if particularly requested.

Ah, that's great! I guess I can just link to those then; no point in doing the same thing twice. Well, I'll probably try and use the Simmons subtitles on the Funi DVDs for all quotes, to keep things standardized. But it would be helpful for you to keep track of feats. Maybe do a few movies?Hugo Boss wrote:Interesting request. Since I only have Brazilian anime version I can't help on statements, but I can check all anime feats or similar stuff. WHAT VEGETTO THING?!Herms wrote:Or any manga quotes that still aren't in the Strength Checker (I know there's at least one Vegetto thing I still haven't bothered to add).
I can't wait for the strength-related info from manga-focused guidebooks, though I don't care much about the rest. Well anyway, good luck in having this done!
Also, isn't strength-related quotes wiki-worthy?

I can check movies and TV Specials too, starting on February. 1) Is there any site I can check a compilation of all existing Dragon Ball animated series? It would be helpful for me to make everything in time.
2) Do you have a particular model for feats? Like context, time frame, Episode?

I won't be able to help, but if it is possible maybe you guys can try and include the Narration and Recap information that might be relevant to the strength debates.

Yeah, I'll try to speed up the completion of that GT Strength Checker. This sounds dastardly amazing, though with so many episodes, the anime portion will be a slugfest.

I can assure you that the quotes are reliable, but the formatting may not be up to par with what Herms wants. So basically, the strength feats are there, but not in proper format.RandomGuy96 wrote:There's also a few movie strength checkers from that same site, but unfortunately I can't speak for their reliability. More or less the same as the Strength Checker:Hugo Boss wrote:2) Do you have a particular model for feats? Like context, time frame, Episode?
Episode: DB/Z/GT episode so-and-so, 10:00
Description of what happens.
The time code doesn't have to be super-specific. Just the minute it starts, really.
