Can some DB games go the dark and edgy path/"mature"?

Post by EXBadguy » Mon Jan 13, 2014 11:20 am

I've been thinking about this for a while now and I think maybe it can work. I mean, we ALL know that the DB series actually have cuss words and a whole lotta blood in them, so why not. Hell, even Budokai 1 and Burst Limit had blood. Though I do see some reactions for franchise going the dark path. Their reactions can be positive(Jak II and III), mixed(DmC), or bad(Shadow the Hedgehog..though I liked the game). But I do think that the DB games can have a good reception for "maturing". It doesn't need to be over the top to get a rated M, but they can just add blood and more cussing. The actual shows have it, so why can't the games?

Anyway, what do yall think? I already know what the answers are anyway, but I can still ask.

Because the ones in charge don't want to. Everytime Future Gohan is playable, they give him a one-armed moveset...but both arms. There's not even any blood involved there and they STILL won't do it. That right there shows their stance on anything a little more "edgy".

If only Atari was around, because I remember in Sagas Future Gohan had his one arm costume.

Wow that's interesting, is there footage of it?

I won't dare myself to play Sagas again because it's bad as that tech demo known Knack for PS4, although Knack isn't exactly as broken it's just too repetitive and boring.
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray

Pretty sure that's actually because everybody's moves are scripted to work on two-armed characters.

Biggest one would be Android 18's attack that finishes with a kick to the arm like she did to Vegeta. She would kick empty air on a one-armed Gohan.

That's part of it, but Namdai did specifically say in an interview that they wont include Gohan with one arm because it would force them to raise the game's rating.

:lolno: That's bullshit and they know it!

Anyway, what about the blood and cussing, why can't they add them both in DBZ games yet they all the other rated T games they release have them.

Reducing your potential audience by upping the rating for a franchise who's already seeing dwindling sales year after year and game after game sounds like a recipe for disaster.

I don't see any creative/artistic benefit to it, either. What pure violence there is in the series is never the focus or the real point of any given scene, and it's immediately shoved away in favor of showing something else.

I'm all game for a new take on the series, but I don't know that this is the place or way to do it.

A M rated DBZ would bomb terribly. The main target buyers for these games are at least 6 - 18. DBZ does have blood and some swearing, but most of it is around a PG or PG-13 level. Nothing in DBZ should be R rated or NC-17 rated.

Oh, come on you two. Nobody's saying that Namco needs to up the ratings. What I'm trying to say is that it's not bad to just add blood and mild swearing in the games. Look at Budokai 1 and Burst Limit people got blood on they faces and have real scrapes and wounds, that's how the next DBZ game or a next gen one should have.

Plus, nobody's saying that NB should start having Goku say OTT cuss words like "Shit", "Fuck", "Pussy", oh hell no, that would definitely hurt the sales. But, you know, mild swear words like "Damn" "Crap" "Bitch" "Bastard", etc. Those words are okay to be in. They were in Kai, so why not in the games?

Are they THAT scared?

What would the point be of adding more swears and blood? That won't help the games if they are the same game play wise.

That looks kinda creepy seeing Gohan with just one arm in a video game. >_>

Calling a woman by "bitch" is okay nowadays? That's pretty offensive and no educated woman would like to be called such a derogatory term.

Dead or Alive, Super Smash Bros and Street Fighter these three examples don't have any blood or swearing but they're still fun as hell to play.

Tekken tries to throw in some blood but you just get to see it for an instance and then it disappears.

I fully agree. We need a more gritty Dragon Ball game to bring the franchise back to its former glory. As we all know dark equals mature and mature equals quality.

But seriously the games do not need this. All the developers need to worry about is making functional and enjoyable games. I'm all for better writing and game design, but this would not help at all.

But it's okay for Vegeta to call Android 18 that since she's no human. 8)

They do have swear words, plus they have these, http://youtu.be/smfXN2dhk_0 , http://youtu.be/7VxR_Y-bKxQ

And don't worry, I ain't asking for them either.

The hell are you talkin' 'bout? They can improve more on the battle system while making the fights more realistic. You see some of Burst Limit gut punches? Once you do a full power gut punch and you see that dent on the opponent's back, the opponent should cough up blood. Another one is when you're REALLY beat up or survived an ultimate attack, there should be blood on them. It doesn't have to stay and stick but at least just show it. What's the excuse? Oh lemme guess, kids? I think some of them have watched uncut before. And what's wrong with just saying "Dammit"?

I hope you guys ain't becoming soft like the Sonic fanbase, because unlike Sonic, The actual DB series is uncut.

Your title is misleading. You say for the games to go more dark and edgy, while listing shadow and DMC as examples... But really, you're just asking for more blood and swears? That isn't nearly as severe as shadow and especially DMC.

I think they should fix the games first, before doing anything else.

And blood and swearing is part of maturing. You can bring other stuff if you want like gambling slots(even though I DOUBT they'll do that  )

That's nice, but those two games did much more then that. Bad examples. Especially DMC, since that completely changed the WHOLE SERIES.

Those are all very shallow and immature thoughts on being "mature". Sure. Blood, swearing, etc may be inappropriate for children but that doesn't make it mature. If that were true most of Adult Swim's line up would considered "mature" when in actuality it's all quite juvenile.

And then I looked up and saw this comment. I hope you've now degraded into hyperbole and facetiousness because Sonic is a prime example of how being "dark" does not equate to being "mature" or good. No one likes Shadow the Hedgehog, right?

So yeah, I'm probably gonna ignore this thread for a while. I'm gonna go ahead and believe that you're trying pull a fast one on us. Instead of being mean and assuming you're this deluded.

No shit. I'm just saying that term in another way. Y'know, a business perspective.

Whoa! Did it hit you THAT hard?

Sure I understand that the "maturity growth" of that franchise wasn't meant for them, but come on, that game is bad in general because Shadow said "Damn" and used guns, which aren't even real ones? And plus, as some of you guys know, Sonic games NEVER had any dark and edgy feeling, and that's why I called them soft. As I said again, unlike Sonic which has games that are 98% for kids, DB has more graphic stuff, so why can't we just put it in the games to please us old fans and the average old fans along with improving the battle system.

So how about you or anyone else tell me how can this franchise mature? Cuz that's what I'm hearing from a lot of people, and I myself said it.
