Always struck me as odd though, that both the edited CN version and Pioneer-released home video versions of movies 1 and 2 used the original BGM, whereas 3 didn't.Tatsunoboshi Horoko wrote:That explains a lot. I never did buy the VHS because of what I saw on television.
What dub ep did you want to see more than any other (if any)

Actually tarsonis, of all the DBZ movies out there, the movie # 3 (Tree of Might) was the first one to be dubbed in English. Also, the edited version that you saw on CN was originally broadcasted by Saban on network TV (which explains why it was thoroughly and throughout "Sabanized", err I mean sanatized for your protection). Also, it was shown divided into three parts with some footage edited out from the movie and other footage being actually added from other episodes. The TV version was Ian Corlett's last performance as Goku, and afterwards Peter Kelamis took over as Goku. One thing that should be noted is that the reason why the TV version of Tree of Might was reversioned completely and the home video version wasn't is because the movie was (initially) dubbed while the Funimation was still associated with Saban (when the movie was first broadcast, they were preparing to air the Namek Saga), and only after Saban dropped out of syndication business, FUNimation struck a deal with Pioneer to distribute their horribly butchered first two seasons on VHS and DVD. And in exchange for their distribution services, Pioneer demanded that the rights for the first three movies would be given to them. Now, unlike FUNimation, Pioneer took a completely different approach with those movies. Rather than giving fans an English re-interpretation or creative outlet of those movies, Pioneer kept the Dead Zone, The World's Strongest, and the Tree of Might accurate and close to their original Japanese counterparts as humanly possible (May God bless them for that).tarsonis wrote:Always struck me as odd though, that both the edited CN version and Pioneer-released home video versions of movies 1 and 2 used the original BGM, whereas 3 didn't.Tatsunoboshi Horoko wrote:That explains a lot. Oh, and as for Tatsunoboshi Horoko, buy the home video version of Tree of Might movie. Even though it's now out of print, you can still find it used in some rental stores.
On the last note, check out Chris Psaros' review of DBZ Movie # 3 on his website

It should explain everything about the Tree of Might movie.

I was curious as to how FUNi would handle the episode where Gohan snaps and passes up SSJ level 1, in the Cell Games. To be honest, I saw the Japanese version first and was a little put off by the choice of music they used during that scene. It should've been either silent or and little more serious. I liked FUNi's version a little better.

OMG, that scene was dead serious and powerful in the Japanese version. In the Funimation version they just reused regular background music and made it seem ordinary.Grandmaster J wrote:I was curious as to how FUNi would handle the episode where Gohan snaps and passes up SSJ level 1, in the Cell Games. Back at the time 2000-2001ish of being a newb to the series & believing all the crap that was posted on the internet (again newb), The episode I was wanted to see more than any other was when Cell was introduced. It really made for good drama & was probably the biggest "plot twist" in that whole 72 episode arc that CN aired.

Well, once I knew the series, I of course waited for Ep. 184 to see how Gohan's SSJ2 would be handled. Other highlights though were:
-Majin Vejita. I watched the dub just to see this part, and I wasn't too terribly disappointed (it was about a C if I were to grade it). No one can match Ryo Horikawa's performance, but Sabat didn't kill the mood and the script wasn't butchered. Actually, Vejita's death was the *last* dub episode I watched fully. I only saw bits of SSJ3 and so forth later on via the net.
-Goku's SSJ. Once season 3 began, I started looking up things on the net to see why the production values seemed so much worse...and discovered the original. So, once I had seen SSJ in Japanese and Spanish, I waited to see how the US would handle...probably one of the better scenes in the English dub.
-Vejita's SSJ. This is one of my favorite parts of the series, with Vejita kicking ass and being his arrogant self to the 5th power. The English version pissed me off greatly though when they tried to mess up the rest of the series and make SSJ sound like some sort of enlightenment. Kinda makes Vejita's motivation for becoming a Majin not make sense for the dub fans, no?
-Trunks. The special, the first appearance, everything. I loved Battle Power Infinity and part of me hoped that, since FUNi took a break after the whole Garlic Jr. thing, that maybe they might option the song. Not the full OST, but a few choice tracks. Then we got the preview which seemed okay, and I waited to see if maybe FUNi had tightened up their adaptation...too bad they didn't
I also remember that they started putting the Ocean cast in the credits again, and yours truly started jumping for joy at the possiblity of the Ocean Group returning to do the VAing. Again, too bad they didn't.
-Bardock. Tragedy.
There's more, but those are a few big ones that come to mind.

True about FUNimation's choice of background music. But I still thought their version was much more hardcore. It wasn't fantastic though. I still enjoyed the Japanese version, but I just didn't care for that song they played. That's all.tarsonis wrote:OMG, that scene was dead serious and powerful in the Japanese version. The song is what I think completes the emotion in the whole scene, since music is such an important part of mood. But it's just a great song anyway, in my opinion. Many years ago when I saw that scene for the first time I played that song over and over again. Cmon, someone has to back me up here!Grandmaster J wrote:True about FUNimation's choice of background music. But I still thought their version was much more hardcore. It wasn't fantastic though. For me it was the Final Flash vs Cell and the Majin Vegeta pre-battle banter. Both of which were actually kinda decent, by the dub's standards.
Oh, and when Piccolo fused with Kami and had the correct line to Mr. Popo, my jaw hit the floor. It made up for the "Super Saiyan Club" comment earlier in the arc.
I love watching//comparing. I WAS jazzed about the redub, but it seems like anytime I see any part that wasn't cut out of the first run, they use like 90% of the original script (and I don't like the cast as much). I do want to see the redubs of the first 3 films. And I have yet to see movie 12 in english. I'm curious, but scared as well.

To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.

I have to agree that the best dub moments surely have to be towards the end of the Buu saga ranging from Gohan's return to the final battle.
Is it only me that thinks the animation of the final battle of the Buu saga is drawn and visually realised better than anything Dragonball which succeeded it?

I thought Funi did the Vegeta SSJ Transformation well.(When I first saw it, I got goosebumps!
