I know DB and DBZ ended almost 20 years ago but...
Some of these topics could use a few spoiler alerts. I suppose it is my fault though, for not watching the entire series before coming to this forum
I watched a lot of it as a kid but never paid too much attention to the overall storyline, which is why I'm watching all of it now as an adult. Sorry if this is off topic or in the wrong forum!

You would make everyone bother to use spoiler tags in a in-universe forum for an anime/manga that ended 20 years ago instead of realizing that you should probably finish the series before checking out fan forums if you don't want to be spoiled?

How did you make this thread if you're a dead guy?
On-topic: You should probably finish the series first before going on forums.

Re: I know DB and DBZ ended almost 20 years ago but...
I dunno. It's a really tough call.
On one hand, I myself get kinda upset when I see massive spoilers for story-related aspects of, say, video games from 20 years ago that I hadn't gotten to yet and still plan on playing. It's not like they're going away, and I still have them all, so give me time!
Then again... how much time is enough time? Are games the same as TV series / comics / movies? Are even those three all the same? Does it matter which specific community you're coming to in order to discuss it all? Part of me expects that if you've gone to the effort of finding this site (which, admittedly, isn't that difficult considering we're both the largest one and the oldest-still-updating site...!), then you've probably decided to go "all-in" and just want to know everything.
And then there are the studies that seem to suggest "spoilers" do not actually negatively affect enjoyment of things.
So I dunno, man! I'd love to hear other thoughts. I come from a generation of fans who piece-mealed the series together via VHS fansubs, so everything was a spoiler for events that happened before/during/after what I watched, and that was all... uhh... 17 years ago... :/

I think that if you're going to look around an In-Universe section on a huge forum attached to the most comprehensive Dragonball fansite on the internet, you should expect spoilers, because essentially that's what this part of the forum is for - discussing in-universe events.
It's not practical or logical to expect every poster to scrub their posts of everything but that which they assume that every fan already knows about.
At the end of the day, if you don't want the story to be spoiled for you - don't spoil it for yourself, and avoid these sorts of discussions.

Dude, you've had 20 years.
I'm a senior moderator on a wrestling forum, and one of my friends is from Hungary. He asked if we could bring in a spoiler system because he is seven weeks behind everyone else with the WWE due to translations and such.
I thought a spoiler system because somebody was seven weeks behind was silly. You're 20 years behind
Battle of Gods threads should have spoilers I'd say though. It's pretty recent, and I can't seem to find it online, so i'd imagine a lot of people haven't watched it yet.

Re: I know DB and DBZ ended almost 20 years ago but...
I feel that, given all the various outlets, legal or otherwise, for a fan of the franchise to see most everything, I feel that spoiler tags for most everything Dragonball/Z/GT related is rather unnecessary. At most, I think maybe topics pertaining to Battle of the Gods could use spoilers because of how new it technically still is, and that it hasn't been released in the states yet. Sure, there are other means to see it that I imagine a substantial number of individuals on this site have partaken in, but there's still a large portion of the North American fan base that I imagine hasn't seen it.
Most everything else has been out for a long time, and with so many legitimate ways to see it, I don't think that spoiler tags are necessary for it.

Re: I know DB and DBZ ended almost 20 years ago but...
I dunno, I'm kinda conflicted on this myself. With something that's been around as long as DBZ has, even just in the US, it's easy to forget that there are indeed new fans that might not have seen all of the old stuff even, and I hate that they probably have no choice but to be spoiled on stuff. But that kind of comes with the territory I suppose, especially for something like DBZ where specific elements of the story are always being debated over and over.
I haven't been around (especially not in an online perspective) quite as long as VegettoEX or many others, but I still date back far enough that I grew up as a fan in a time where spoilers were almost sought out on purpose. Or at least, that was the case for me. I couldn't get enough of reading about further movies and episodes that, far as we knew then, we may never get, on sites like Planet Namek. I knew all about GT when the Toonami airing was just getting started on the Androids stuff. Spoilers were just part of being a fan back then seemed like.

I think it would be bad if I couldn't say that my favourite moment in the series was when...
He joined a DBZ forum without finishing the series. His fault if he gets spoilers.
Understandable for something like Naurto or One Piece, series that are still running, but Z ended a long time ago. You had a lot of time to catch up.
If you're knew to the series, perhaps make threads yourself. Maybe you could say "I'm only up to this part, so please no spoilers" instead of asking everybody to take action in threads.

If you're coming onto a dedicated fansite like this, you should expect spoilers. But anywhere else, people should mark spoilers, no matter how old the series is (except something like Star Wars or FFVII, those are so imbedded in our culture that they're impossible to avoid). I never even saw Star Wars until a couple years ago, because my family was never big on movies and I didn't have many resources to just watch them myself. I would have rather spent the little money I had on other things, like video games. You don't get to decide when people should have watched something. "You've had 20 years" No, they don't always have a chance.

To be honest, DBZ isn't known for it's great story telling all the arc's are essentially the same:
Having said that each arc utilizes those basic principles differently, so I understand why one might be concerned about spoilers. In my opinion DBZ is all about the fights, and that is why I love it!

Re: I know DB and DBZ ended almost 20 years ago but...
I'd say what matters the most here is that this is a forum solely dedicated to the discussion of one single franchise that concluded ages ago. On more general forums, you obviously can't expect people to have read/seen/played/listened to every single thing that falls under the general theme, but for franchise-exclusive places like this - those dedicated to finished franchise in particular - you should probably expect that the extreme majority of visitors have indeed seen/read/played/listened to the entire thing, and there's going to be spoilers for you if you haven't.VegettoEX wrote: Then again... how much time is enough time? Well said everyone! In the future when I have a question I probably will mention I haven't seen the whole thing to avoid getting spoiled. I definitely see peoples points about this being an in-universe discussion board so spoilers are kinda what it's all about.
Thanks to the Australian for actually using a spoiler tag there. Not sure what your favourite moment is but I'm assuming it takes place much later than episode 56 of dbz, which is where I'm at

Re: I know DB and DBZ ended almost 20 years ago but...
One thing to do with spoilers I noticed and forgot to mention, is that the Japanese episode titles pretty much spoil the whole episode right at the beginning. They almost always make a direct reference to the most surprising thing that happens in that episode. For example the episode titled "Goku Dies!"
The english episode names seem to be much less revealing. I've actually gotten into the habit of looking away every time the episode name comes up to avoid getting spoiled.
