All this praising about One Piece made me want to go back watching it. I'm still at the Alabasta Arc so i still have a lot of ground to cover!

My favourite arc as of now would have to be the Arlong Arc. That arc was really awesome! Arlong is a really great villain, also really badass!

Love his design.

Arlong is probably my favorite arc too. Just long enough to be really awesome, not overly dragged out like some other storylines can be...like Alabasta. Dear god, Alabasta. Especially in the anime.

I actually think I could sit through any version of the Namek/Freeza material again, even the season 3 dub, around the clock until I finished it, easier than I could sit through any version of Alabasta around the clock.

Alabasta had an epic ending that I can watch a lot of times though.

The ending is great, yes, I can't deny that. But just getting through all of it can be one heck of a chore. Every time I do watch it, I'm so happy when the arc's finally over and we can get to somewhere that's not all green and blue like Nam - er, all sandy like Alabasta.

If the whole of Dragon Ball as it is had popped into Oda's head, and then he'd made changes as he saw fit, I think we'd have ended up with a better series.

Well, One Piece starts really slow and boring. i didn't like it until Arlong arc, which starts on chapter 69, volume 8. it was a good series.
when we got into the Water 7 arc (which starts on chapter 322, volume 34) it became a perfect manga. 9/10 for me.
oh and the current arc in manga is totally amazing, it's actually my 5th favorite arc ever in One Piece!

No, because One Piece is terrible. Dragon Ball is better than One Piece in almost every way. I've said it many times and I'll say it again- One Piece doesn't deserve the honor of being the best shounen manga in the world. It's mediocre at its best. If anything, it would be better if Toriyama wrote One Piece instead.

Plenty of folks here are also One Piece fans. It's not so absolutely bizarre that someone doesn't like it at all, and they're entitled to that opinion. Neither series needs a defense force.

, but it could happen XD I've seen wars starting like this in other forums. And yeah, everyone has been saying how One piece is really not that great. but no one has said it's outright terrible anyone would jump at that XD

Most One Piece critics don't even know One Piece that well. That's pretty important since most fans admit that it took a while for One Piece to actually click for them, often a great deal of volumes.

If Toriyama wrote Dragon Ball there would be no amazing world building, there would be no imaginative looking islands, there would be no devil fruits giving people various uniques powers, everyone would fight using the same techniques, it would be rushed, it's story inconsistent and characters who died wouldn't actually stay dead and their deaths rendered meaningless.

Honestly you talk as though One Piece kidnapped your family or something, have you even read it?

For me I knew One Piece was going to be great from when Zoro fought Mihawk and it only got better from there.

If One Piece takes eight volumes to get good that's probably a good sign it isn't really worth the time. Eight volumes is a half of a day's worth of reading to devote to a single comic just to justify reading it "when it gets good."

One Piece is good from the get go, from volume 6 onwards is when it gets great

I disagree, I read about the first three volumes and felt no desire to read the rest. Other series I don't really continue reading unless they "hook" me in.

One Piece is fantastic but Akira Toriyama makes Dragon Ball what it is. It wouldn't be the same otherwise, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

By the way, I enjoy the critiquing of One Piece that is going on in this thread. It actually makes me happy to see Dragon Ball fans hate one One Piece, lol. Makes Dragon Ball look better, lol. I agree with rereboy completely though. One Piece, imo, is brilliant, and has usurped all other manga and anime as my favorite.

I feel One Piece has a better story and world building than Dragon Ball, but DB/Z has better characters and action. Oda's characters are good, but not great, I feel like they aren't validated enough. And, it doesn't have too many good villains either, especially the henchmen (I don't even think CP9 and Baroque Works are that good either, my pick for best henchmen are Enel's Priests). For best arcs, my top 3 are Sabaody Archipelago, Marineford and Skypeia. The current arc, Dressrosa, has the potential to be the best since there are numerous important and mysterious characters involved currently. 2 of the most recent chapters made it that way; before those chapters, I was really only interested in Law v Doffy v Fujitora

I agree with most people here that a one shot Dragonball or Z manga done by Oda would be awesome.

But I would love to see a sorta artist swap over one shot where Oda handle a story he writes in the Dragonball universe with his art style and Akira handles a One Piece one shot with his art style and story.

I love Dragon Ball.
For many, many years it was my favorite anime- I thought nothing could ever come close to passing it.

Then One Piece entered my life. I haven't looked back.
Don't get me wrong, I still love Dragon Ball, but when comparing it to One Piece, I can't even choose one thing that Dragon Ball does better- except -MAYBE- fight scenes. I like the characters more, the world, the idealism, the EMOTION which a lot of people seem to be blowing entirely out of proportion here. If you think "FRIENDSHIP IS STRONGER THAN ANYTHING" is Luffy's reasoning for doing anything, you are entirely wrong. He does what HE wants to do (for right, or wrong), it's not some blind ideal of friendship like in Yu-Gi-Oh!

Luffy treats his crew and protects them the way he does, because of his past. How when he was a young child someone close to him died, and cried out that he would be stronger- so that he would never have to lose anyone again (of course, people would realize this if they would get past Alabasta, you can't base your entire thoughts on the manga, when you've only read basically nothing of it and the world is so much more complex, and deep than you can even imagine by that point), a point they really smash in, during the Sabaody and Marineford arcs.

I'm in the process of reading the manga through for the first time (as previously, I had only watched the anime, and started the manga with Punk Hazard), and I'm about to start volume 49, and it has really restarted my love of One Piece. The anime might not be hot right now, but apart from Fishman Island, I haven't been disappointed or bored with anything in the One Piece manga (and even then Fishman Island still has some good parts, but the bad just outweigh the good), the art is top notch.

And I was as skeptical, and misguided about One Piece as a lot of people here seem to be. This might seem to be a bit of a blanket statement, but it really seems like a lot of people here are taking trash about OP without 1)Having read the majority of it [up to the end of Water 7/Enies Lobby is fair I suppose], or 2)giving it a fair chance. At some points, it feels like people here are TOO AFRAID of admitting that One Piece could possibly be objectively better than Dragon Ball (which is obviously the king of shonen manga) so they have to dump on it, and blow it out of proportion.

I am just as big of a Dragon Ball fan as you guys are, but at some point this needless, and partly mindless hating of One Piece is redundant or unneeded. I find it very hard to not like both series, considering how much inspiration Oda has taken Toriyama. Just enjoy both guys.
