Did Piccolo become purely good-hearted?

Post by Mr. Piccolo » Fri Jan 17, 2014 5:55 pm

Did Piccolo ever become a purely good-hearted character? We know he merged with Nail and Kami, two good characters, and we know that Piccolo himself was softened by Gohan, but was Piccolo 100 percent good by the time the series ended?
Kami is my co-pilot.

It depends if you're counting GT as well. I guess you could say he was pure hearted in that, considering he sacrificed himself to save the earth.

No, I am just thinking of the manga, so the end of the Buu arc.

Well in that case I suppose you could say it's a little of both, Piccolo's a nice guy most of the time but when the situation's right he can be harsh as well. For instance when he's training Goten and Trunks, he's hard on them every now and then because they make dumb decisions but when they succeed he does praise them for it. It's hard to say really, but in my opinion I would say yes. At the end of the day he's only a jerk when he needs to be or when one of the characters needs a good talking to.

No character is completely pure except Goku in early DB as proven when he survived the devilmite beam which kills anyone with even the slightest impurity in their heart. So probably not entirely but he definitely improved.

I remember a hilarious scene when Krillin suggested Piccolo would be a bad oponent against Babidi, since he was a Evil Family's descendant, to what Piccolo answered that was in the past. Of course, I can't say Piccolo have bad intentions, then I can say he is a zen character. Pure by heart is almost impossible, I could say even for Goku who likes to fight and Goten who is a lazy character as a teenager.

I'd say that by the Buu arc there was no real evil to speak of within him, but whether or not that constitutes as pure hearted or not is a little more problematic, at least in regards to how the term 'Pure Hearted' is used in Dragonball.

I think that even before he merged with Kami he was more or less entirely a good-guy, after the merger the only real difference in his character that we see is that he appears more wise and considered, with his role in the Buu arc at least, as opposed to being rash or hot-headed - but that may be purely coincidental and unintended, as opposed to representing any real character development on Toriyama's part.

And let's be honest, Toriyama isn't really the best at subtle character development - in regard to intentional changes in character, at least. Normally if there's a change, you see it on the page in the form of a transformation or something.

terrible take imo... you have characters like supreme kai and king kai. not to mention the fact that goten can ride on the nimbus and so can chichi and gohan...
