English Manga or English Kai
I read the English Manga (Red Covers, me thinks thar be Viz) and I watch Kai, so I'm wondering, which is the most accurate compared to the original Japanese Manga?
The Manga is really inconsistent with Goku's name.
Sometimes he is "Son-Jun", other times he is "Son Gokuu" other times he is "Son Goku" and even "Son Gokuh"
Why?

You must've looked at a foreign English version that spells things differently like how Englishmen say "colour" as Viz only does Son Goku.

I'm from Australia, and we use UK English, so that's probably why.
Though, I prefer Son Goku over Son Gokuu.
In Kai, Z and DB, It's always just been Goku.

Re: English Manga or English Kai
Son Gokuu is the literal romanisation, but spelling it Son Goku is just fine. The Z and GT dubs are pretty damn inaccurate, and probably dropped Goku's family name to not confuse the American kids. The DB dub, while generally better, continued with this for the sake of consistency. Kai's dub did drop a couple of "Son Goku"s.
Kai doesn't quite follow the manga exactly, but it's translation is more accurate to the Japanese Kai dialogue than Viz's is to the manga.

Eh... I'd say they're around the same level. They both take a few liberties with the script here and there. They both have a few name alterations, and some slightly "punched up" dialog at times.Fizzer wrote:Kai doesn't quite follow the manga exactly, but it's translation is more accurate to the Japanese Kai dialogue than Viz's is to the manga.

The original Japanese version of Kai is more accurate to the original Japanese version of the manga than either FUNimation's English dub of Kai or Viz's English translation of the manga.MysticVegeta wrote:So Kai > Manga?

So which would I be better off with? Funi's Kai or Viz's Manga?

Re: English Manga or English Kai
Viz's manga probably wins because it covers the whole story. Kai only starts at the Saiyan arc and ends (so far) at the Cell arc, which is less than half of the story in terms of manga pages. The manga starts at the beginning and finishes at the end.MysticVegeta wrote:So which would I be better off with? Funi's Kai or Viz's Manga?
Re: English Manga or English Kai
I'd say the Manga.
You're going to run into things like Hercul.e, Vegerot and Piccolo's strange 'Shakespearean' chatter for a few chapter but overall, it's pretty solid. Those issues did bug me a fair bit but I'd say the overall product is a lot more accurate than Funi Kai. At least you're not dealing with Ti.en and King Kai.
Wow, that filter is a pain when trying to give examples.

Re: English Manga or English Kai
Well, spelling inconsistencies aside, it's worth remembering that different characters call him by different names. Obviously there's the fact that Vegeta refers to him as Kakarotto. Characters like Kuririn and Yamucha call him Goku, while Tenshinhan and Piccolo often address him as Son. And then there's Blooma who pretty much exclusively uses the name Son-kun.MysticVegeta wrote:Sometimes he is "Son-Jun", other times he is "Son Gokuu" other times he is "Son Goku" and even "Son Gokuh"

The perverted, sunglasses-wearing mentor character has a similar issue. Kuririn, Yamucha, and Tenshinhan always refer to him as Muten Roshi-sama (or occasionally Roshi-sama). Blooma often calls him Kame'sennin. And Goku refers to him as Old Man Kame'Sennin.

Let's see...if you can find Kai with Yamamoto, then I'd suggest going for that, then switching to the Manga once Yamamoto falls out.

They both have ups and downs. Are you unable to collect both? Seems like you'll get the best understanding of everything if you have a couple versions to compare.MysticVegeta wrote:So which would I be better off with? Funi's Kai or Viz's Manga?

I have all of the Manga on my iPod, thanks to good ol' Manga Reader, but I don't want to waste my time if I could just watch Kai.
I thought Vegerot was a joke name?!?!?!?

Are those the scanslated versions? The artwork looks like vomit in that version of the manga. You should totally support the official release if you've already pirated a crappier version of it.MysticVegeta wrote:I have all of the Manga on my iPod, thanks to good ol' Manga Reader, but I don't want to waste my time if I could just watch Kai.

Re: English Manga or English Kai
If you have all the manga already, why don't you just start reading it and see how you like it? If it's not for you then try DBZK. Sure, the manga has some weird translations and censorship but, I think it's still enjoyable and get's the heart of the story across just fine.MysticVegeta wrote:I have all of the Manga on my iPod, thanks to good ol' Manga Reader, but I don't want to waste my time if I could just watch Kai.
