If these are the Madman discs in Blue Brick packaging, I will be picking them up. If they're just the Blue Bricks, well then I'll probably end up importing from Madman. However, with differences in terms of disc count and such, it seems fairly likely that they will use FUNimation's master. That is, if they can. If not, maybe they will find a way to use the Madman version.

In what way are the Madman sets better? I don't know anything about them.

And why wouldn't these just be the blue bricks when so far we've had the orange and green bricks?

The notion that they might be the Madman sets comes from the fact that Manga UK used Madman's footage for Z and GT, and Madman doesn't have the Blue Bricks. The Madman sets don't have the minor cropping that the Blue Bricks have, and they also feature Japanese title cards. Personally, it's the release I want.

Wait... The UK seasons contain different footage to the orange and green bricks?

If they were to charge £15 per each box then that'd come to £75 (pretty good deal), but we know they won't (more likely £24+) 'cause they know the uninformed fans will buy it for whatever price they stamp it with.

Compare this:

Episodes 001-031
To:

Episodes 001-083
You're basically getting more episodes for less than what Manga UK demands.

No it's the Green Bricks and Orange Bricks, but Madman never bothered with the Blue Bricks what they have is the Saga Collection episodes.

Amazon have all five of these sets listed for pre-order. Looks like Manga want to get these all released by the end of the year. The episode count doesn't match the Blue Bricks though, guess it's the Madman discs repackaged. I hope MangaUK drop the 'digitally remastered' banner at the top since this won't be the case. I'm also kinda hoping they change the Dragonball logo like they did with GT.

Excellent! I will definitely be picking these up then. Which logo do you think they'd be likely to use if they went with the Japanese one then? Would it be the old blue and red one? Because I thought they'd stopped using that. I'd still prefer it over the current one, though.

£22.39 for each Collection (that's how the guy called them on the video) that comes to a total of £111.95, considering that the R4 Complete Part 1 is unavailable for a reasonable price, this isn't that bad of a deal any more.

It'll get better once the prices drop too.

I've got no rush to get all of the Dragon Ball Collection sets this year.

I think they still use the blue and red logo, the new German DVD's used it and the last one of those was released last year. The UK always used that logo for the games so it would make more sense if they used that. They could try the manga one, which was also used for the Blue water dub intro, but I doubt they'd use that. I wonder though whether it was MangaUK or Toei that decided to use the proper GT logo.

I'm pretty confident that Manga is using Madman's masters based on the episode counts of the UK sets (assuming the Amazon listings are correct). Each season corresponds to two or three sagas of the Australian version (season one is episodes 1-28, rather than 1-31). The disc counts on the Amazon listings follow this as well; seasons 1-3 & 5 are 4 discs while season four is six discs. This makes more sense than the arbitrary way the US seasons were divided, but it does means that the episode counts range from 26 to 39 episodes in each set. That means that the seasons are split as:
Season One: Pilaf Saga, Tournament Saga (#1-28)
Season Two: Red Ribbon Army Saga, General Blue Saga (#29-57)
Season Three: Commander Red Saga, Fortuneteller Baba Saga (#58-83)
Season Four: Tien Shinhan Saga, King Piccolo Saga: Part One & Two (#84-122)
Season Five: Piccolo Jr. Saga: Part One & Two (#123-153)

No comparisons, just screenshots of the R4's Saga of Goku:

These shots were taken by Superrayman3.

Now for comparison shots:

Saga - Top
Blue Brick - Middle
Dragon Box - Bottom

The Dragon Box shows more detail than the Saga Collection but it's still overall better than the Blue Bricks.

The fact the season 1 is "PG" makes me very worried that these sets won't be uncut.

I assume that the PG logo is just there as a placeholder and that the episodes haven't been rated yet. I'm really curious as to what the BBFC will rate episode three and how adult they consider the Bulma and Roshi scene.

BBFC ratings are fucking bs. I never take them seriously due to its inaccuracy.

Let's take Neon Genesis Evangelion Vol. 1 which is PG does it mean that it's censored? Of course not. But I suppose they'll change that to 12 eventually on the DB Collections.

In that case I'll use the reversible cover (don't really like seeing BBFC on Dragon Ball stuff).

Do you feel they should be PG then?

It should be aged 12 but I don't really care what rating they give it. I'd prefer a rated-less cover anyway.

These look like they have better encoding than the U.S singles

While the encoding is better than on Funi's singles, the video has some ghosting and blurriness often associated with older NTSC to PAL conversions.

The plus side is that they won't be time-compressed, which is just a disgusting practice IMO. I've found that NTSC-to-PAL conversions look oddest during pans and certain fast movements, but it's more of a "different" thing as NTSC has its own oddities with 3:2 pulldown frames, after all.
