Ichiro Nagai passes away

Post by kei17 » Mon Jan 27, 2014 5:20 am

Ichiro Nagai, the voice actor for Tsurusen'nin and Karin has suddenly passed away today. He was found unconscious in a bathtub at a hotel and taken to the hospital, but unfortunately, he didn't make it. The cause of death is still unknown. May his soul rest in peace.

This means that we've lost the original voice actors for all the three martial arts masters: Mutaito, Kamasen'nin, and Tsurusen'nin.

RIP.

I actually saw DB Movie 3 for the first time recently, he was great there.

Shame. A great voice actor passes on. He will live forever through the beloved Dragon Ball anime. His voice will never die.

Damn. RIP.

Too often do I forget the age of the voice actors and the show. It's always a bit of a shock when these things happen.

RIP, Nagai-san.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

This is horrible news. I am very sad to hear this, as always. Nagai-san's performances were always special. It's such a shame, he seemed just fine in a recent episode of the 2011 Hunter x Hunter TV series.

This is really sad :( But the way I look at it these people never really die. they will live on through Dragonball and other shows that they have worked on. they'll never be forgotten. RIP.

Yeah, he played an awesome Netero. Looks like the anime might be delayed by a bit. RIP

I don't remember if Karin appears on the Buu Saga, if he does, who will dub Karin on Kai Buu Saga?
If he doesn't make an appaerence, then we won't get an abrupt VA change.

Has he been in any of those cast photos from the recording sessions? If so, perhaps we can assume he had done his part already?

For cases like this couldn't they just re-use lines he previously had done? I wouldn't be against it.

If I'm not mistaken, Ichiro Nagai never recorded any lines as Karin during the Boo arc of Z-proper. He left after the character's last appearance in the Cell/Artificial Human arc. And besides, I think even if he had been around to record lines originally, part of Kai's selling point is newly recorded dialogue since the archived audio they have for the original DBZ is in such poor shape by today's standards. It would have been great if they could've re-used the archived audio for other seiyuu that have passed away, such as Daissuke Gori's work for Mr. Satan, but the drop in audio quality would have probably been to distracting.

With all that said, my he rest in peace. Thank you for the memories Ichiro Nagai.

Karin appears and speaks when Goku brings senzu for Videl. I guess he's already recorded his lines.

For the original Z? Toei doesn't have voice-only tapes of old animation series anymore, so that's impossible. It's the very reason why they re-recorded everything for Kai.

This is really sad news. :( I feel pretty bad that I've seen so little of his work too, despite knowing his name and voice fairly well, something I definitely need to fix. Other than Karin and Tsurusennin, I knew him best for various Lupin roles, and Mansuke Jinnouchi (the cool martial arts uncle) in Summer Wars, which (though I've only heard clips of his performance) may be his best role IMO.

Godspeed Mr. Nagai. :(

Unfortunate to hear, condolences to his family. Sucks to be losing more of the original cast.
