How did Piccolo feel about killing Goku?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

How did Piccolo feel about killing Goku?

Post by Mr. Piccolo » Fri Jan 31, 2014 6:41 pm

Do you think Piccolo felt a sense of happiness or satisfaction when he killed Goku with the makankosappo? While Piccolo did not defeat Goku as they were teamed up against Raditz, I remember from the anime that Piccolo, while charging his attack, thought to himself that it was a stroke of luck that he was able to eliminate Raditz and his archrival at the same time. I am not sure how this scene played out in the manga.

Any speculation as to how Piccolo felt about killing Goku and Raditz? Wouldn’t it be kind of a hollow victory since Piccolo did not defeat Goku in battle? Or perhaps he did not care? If the other Saiyans were not coming or if Piccolo didn’t know about their journey to Earth, would he have tried to conquer the world immediately before Goku’s friends could wish him back with the Dragon Balls?

Have you ever read the Thrawn Trilogy in the Star Wars expanded universe?

In it, there is a character named Mara Jade, who was a spy/servent/surrogate daughter-thing of the Emperor. When the Emperor died in Return of the Jedi, he sent here a mental message that "SHE WILL KILL LUKE SKYWALKER!!!!!" This message lingered in her mind for years.

At the end of this trilogy, she ends up killing a clone of Luke (and in the process, saving the real one), and this stops the voice in her head.

I've always found Piccolo's situation to be like this. If I'm not mistaken, at one point while he's training Gohan, he seems to indicate that he had no choice in being evil in the first place, due to his father's influence.

Yeah similar to what Kamiccolo9 said.

It could be something like he finally got revenge and the hate and evil slowly started to diminish within him. (Gohan's influence helped the matter a lot too.

Hmm...wasn't there a line of dialogue somewhere that had Piccolo saying that he was happy about getting to kill Goku, but at the same time, it felt hollow too? I want to say it was either shortly after killing him and Raditz, or in his dialogue after dying to protect Gohan from Nappa's blast. Or am I thinking of an incorrect dub line or something?

Either way, I kind of look at it as that, really. He probably was happy at first, because hey, he killed Goku! Bragging rights that nobody else could say they had until...well, Cell (since I don't think heart virus's get bragging rights). But it's almost pointless since 1) he didn't really 'beat' him to do it, and 2) they're just going to have to wish Goku back so that they can defeat the Saiyans anyway. So even before Piccolo started to change even more thanks to Gohan's influence, he would have had conflicted feelings about it all.

No, unfortunately I have never read any of the Star Wars expanded universe, but that does seem like a very appropriate analogy. Piccolo Daimao does speak to his son/reincarnation after he spits out Piccolo Jr.'s egg, giving him the command to kill Goku, so it seems pretty similar to the Mara Jade story. Perhaps after Piccolo succeeds in killing Goku he started his process of mellowing out, since technically he did fulfill his mission in killing the person who killed Piccolo Daimao.

EDIT: Dbzfan94 beat me to it. I second his contention.

Well he did avenge himself/father/previous incarnation, so I assume he felt good.

I don't think he felt anything...so technically emotionless.

Especially because he knew Goku would be resurrected with the help of the dragonballs

I just watched the episode where Piccolo reflects on killing Goku a few days ago. He says he was really happy at first but he could never continue hating someone who had made such an honorable sacrifice. I believe this is also the moment Piccolo became kind hearted.
